I thought it had about a page of exposition that would better have been explained through your protagonists actions than by the lengthy spider-woman explanation.

On an eccentric scientists private island, spider webs all over, known danger, a bite, a slow transformation, and the eventual climatic matings. I think a reader can put the whole thing together without the added character of the island spider woman. Everything she 'tells' can be done through more active storytelling with your main characters, and the valet.

The writing is good enough if plain. I found no glaring editorial errors which detract from the reading.

Overall a decent effort.
