Carter backs Bush, says bombing should end soon
By JANE HANSEN
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Former President Jimmy Carter praised President Bush on Friday for his handling of the nation's response to terrorism, but suggested that support for the bombing campaign in Afghanistan may not last forever.

His biggest challenge, he said, had been the seizing of the U.S. Embassy in Iran in 1979. Fifty-two American diplomats were held hostage for 14 months.

"I had the military power so that I could have destroyed the capital of Iran and destroyed all the oil fields in Iran," Carter told the students.

"But I thought that would probably result in the death of our hostages as well."

With the conclusion of the hostage crisis, "I was blessed by God, and my prayers were answered," he said. "Because I didn't betray my country and every single hostage came back."

Dear Jimmy,

This is an entirely different situation. So, please, don't make comparisons as the two are apples and oranges.

Sincerely,

Your adoring public
