Frequent internal bathing with alcohol?

No. I've been doing that quite a bit lately, as a matter of fact.

(It isn't helping.)

Could you be more specific about what you mean by ‘losing your touch’? Do you mean that you’re losing your desire to write, or that nothing you write lately appeals to you, or you can’t find anything to write about, or you’re working on soemthiing that’s giving you a lot of trouble?

Really, the first thing you’ve got to do with something like this is try and narrow down and identify the problem, otherwise it’s like going to the Doctor and just telling him you don’t feel good and expecting him to help you.

One thing that usually works for me is to read for a while. Either I read something really good (some ‘Best Short Fiction of the Year’, say) and learn something and want to try it out, or I read something really bad and that pisses me off and I get inspired that way, to do something better. For me, reading is an integral part of writing, and when I find a story that really knocks me out, I tend to go back over it and try and figure out how the author has managed to do that.

I believe that writing shit is better than writing nothing at all, and I’ve gotten some good results by deliberately trying to make myself write over-the-top. Youcan always go back and change it, and some times it doesn’t hurt to try and go for the higher notes, no matter how bad they sound.

I try to keep at least 2 or 3 sub-projects in the works while I work on my main writing.

That way, if I get writers block, I can usually work around it by concentrating on one of the other stories.

This usually works for me.

I usually have a few projects in the works. When I don't feel like writing I read. By reading I've seen stories and come up with new ideas. These inspire me to write that story and get back to the projects I have on hold. If that doesn't work, the internal alcohol bath always helps.
