Hey everyone

Just wanted to introduce myself as I'm a newcomer to lit and to erotic writing in general. I would be very interested to hear any advice that people have for starting in the genre.....

thanks :D

Never submit ANYTHING in the 'Loving Wives' catagory.

Okay, now you've got me curious. Why not?

And hello there! I'm fairly new myself. Welcome to Lit. :)

They're complete savages. They'll rip you to shreads over there.
Loving Wives is the one catagory where you can be vilified no matter what you write.
They don't play nice.

what about those that like extreme pain  ;)

Welcome to the AH, April.

As far as writing erotica goes, it's like writing any other story.

Create characters, have them interact, get them to fuck at one or more points in the story. Write it in such a away that your readers identify with the characters and find the fucking hot.

Like all advice this is easy to give but hard to follow. ;)

Start writing.

Yep, it's as simple as that.

Welcome :)

Basically what Harry said.

There are 2 main schools of thought in Loving Wives. Those that think the catagory about wives loving their husbands. And those that think the catagory is about married women fooling around with anyone and everyone.

So no matter which group you write for, the other half will butcher you. :catroar:

Oh, well seeing as how I have absolutely no experience with either, I don't think I would submit a story anyhow. Thanks guys. Good to know the places to avoid being butchered. :D

<crosses Loving Wives off the Lit list>

Thanks for the advice everyone... and congrats graham with the publication :)

interesting about the loving wives category... luckily that aint really my scene anyway :D

I'd start with your favorite sexual fantasies, either ones that you use on a regular basis to masturbate by or the ones that you would you would never do in real life, but want to explore. From there, as others said, you'll just want to do what you usually do when you're writing.

As for the LW thing, I say fuck 'em. The truth is that someone is always going to disagree with you. The more important thing is to write whatever you want to, and focus on finding your voice and developing your writing.

Welcum to Lit. Don't listen to anyone. Don't feed the animals and carry a loaded gun at all time.

I'm gonna sound ignorant now but what is the process of getting a story published on the site?

Evening April...

Nice to see you plunging in at the deep end.

Some good advice here,

ezyrider the process is simple, first write your story, then fill in the "submission form". (Found in the members section of the STORY part of the site not the forum)

http://members.literotica.com/

There are all sorts of usefull pieces of information to be found if you look.

Actually, ignorgin the gun talk for a moment I'd like to make an alternate sugestion based on that earlier quote.

Do listen to EVERYONE and then make up your own mind.

Lot's of people will offer advice, some might have value, some might not...

Hi April,

as someone who only started writing a few months ago, I would agree with the earlier advice.

1) Write about the fantasies that motivate you - if you're not turned on by it, then you will find it harder to keep the interest real.

2) Create characters that act with real motivation. In other words, explain why they are doing what they doing. It's all about helping the reader see into the mind of the other and start to see those thoughts in their own mind. Lol, I actually broke rule 1) above by writing an incest story. It was an exercise in motives - ie - how could this happen?

3) Keep the writing interesting. Look at how the dialogue flows, keep the descriptions interesting but subordinate to the story. Try to not use the same word twice within three sentances.

4) It's all about timing - not too fast, not too slow. Again, think about how your own fantasies go when masturbating. Do you like to take your time over things? What details turn you on? etc.

5) Above all, have confidence in yourself. Find your voice/style, and allow others to hear you speak. I have a theory that most readers of erotic stories are actually looking for permission to enjoy this too.

Good luck!!

Advice:

1. Find the Newbie thread in the Author's Hangout and read it. It's long but full of useful information.

2. Read the How To submissions in the How To category of 'Stories'.

3. Read the 'Welcome Authors! Please Read' thread at the top of the Author's Hangout Forum.

4. Read a few stories from the Top List for each category to see what the category is about.

5. Never shorten Svenskaflicka's name.

6. Stay clear of the political threads in the Author's Hangout and away from the General Board unless you have armour-plated underwear.

7. Write!

8. Write for one of the themed competitions. The current one, closing in a few days is the Winter Holiday contest. The next one will be for Valentine's Day.

9. Enjoy yourself.

Just start writing...

Just start writing and submit that first story. Thats it. You're first story will be rejected and then you'll re submit it and then it will be accepted and then you will get nasty negative feedback that will make you sick and then you'll get great positive feedback and you'll love it. That's how it starts.

Post in the forums and read and comment on the other stories as well!

welcome!

PS and PPS

10. Believe in yourself and your capability to be or to become a writer.

11. Don't be afraid to ask for advice or help. You will usually get at least one sensible answer before the thread gets hijacked.

Which is not necesarily true.

My first story was accepted first time out, and it generally got very good feedback or honest, constructive criticism.

I would sugest making use of the "Volunteer Editor" scheme, I didn't for the first one it wasn't really the point, but a lot of people liked the story so now I wish I'd got someone to proof read it.

If you feel you are a writer... Get on and write, and to hell with what the philistines think of your efforts.

The main thing is to have fun, don't take anything TOO seriously.

My first was accepted first time 'round, as well.

Get to know other authors, and ask them (nicely) to beta read for you. Listen to what they have to say, even if you think it's a little harsh. Most likely, they're right.

Most important of all... Get an editor. It's great to ignore their advice :D

And...

READ. Good readers are good writers.
