Anybody ever taken it? How about using it for weight loss?

How can I get a doctor to prescribe it?

It's primarily a drug to treat AD/HD, weight loss is occassionally a side effect. So unless you have a good case of AD/HD your gonna have a hard time finding someone to prescribe it just for weight loss.

I know it's for ad/hd......but it's been used for weight loss before, but i think there are too many side effects

a friend gave me some of hers, i lost 12 pounds in 2 weeks....pretty nice side effect if you ask me

I on 30 mg xr's for adhd and have lost 50 lbs since march.

its a very high risk side effect (meaning most all are affected by it) it works by shifting the chemical makeup of the brain and uses the hyperactiveness to be directed inward, (... thats the easyest way i can explain it with out saying all the chemicals by products and changes it makes) the the hyperactivness pointed in wards your body naturaly will burn more fat because it will use more internal energy...

that is how it was explained to me by one of my bio teachers.

the long (but shorter) way, By releasing the anti chemical that stops the overproduction of sugars (causing hyperactivity) the body will then drop in reletive glucouse levels, as well as a drop in natural energy, (glucose=energy and fat=energy) so your body losing the naturaly feed glucose levels will replace it with your natural fat burning fat untill your glucose levels can be caught up to par again. so by stoping the glucose in your blood, your body then has to feed of the fat inorder to recive energy. also it explains how ad/hd people can become fat, the overage amount of glucose will cause your body to say, i dont need this, then store it in the body as fat.

Most all of those medications should Not be used in the treatment of Weight loss. the primary side effects can be much more drastic if some one does not Have AD/HD as well as it might cause the reverse of the medications disered effects, (yes it can cause hyper activity and memory loss if you do not have AD/HD because your body senses these hormones to Stop something that isnt there and doesnt need to be)

Erm

I do have ADHD and had taken this for awhile. I didn't lose weight but there is one bad side effect know three others have had. It makes you aggressive. Like yelling more, wanting to hit/hitting people, all around bad things. Another med that has a weight loss side effect is Topamax, aka dopamax (the joke name given as in high doses will cause you to act "dopey"). Topamax will affect you poorly if you are on the PIll - so don't combine! But it will have the side effect of curbing your appetite. I wouldn't recommend taking any of these drugs unless you have a mental health issue as well. If that is the case then don't go to your GP go to a psychpharmacologist who only does this.

I've taken ritalin -- Adderall is a long acting version of ritalin. It hasn't taken weight off of me, but it does help me focus. I got it from a psychiatrist, but you could get it from your primary care physician, you just need to describe your symptoms. Do you really think you ave ADD? Or do you just want it for weight loss? There are other psychiatric meds that help with weight loss that you could get a doctor to prescribe to you for that reason.

Firstly, Adderall is not a different version of ritalin. Ritalin is methylphenidate, adderall is a combination of two different kinds of amphetamines.

Adderall should not be used to lose weight unless you have a serious, life threatening weight problem. Don't use amphetamines to lose weight!

Trying to use amphetamines to lose weight is DANGEROUS. Amphetamines are addictive drugs, and can cause anxiety disorders and depression, especially in the doses that would be required for any real weight loss. Once you stop taking the drugs the weight will come back so you'll have to keep taking them...get where I'm going with this?

Losing weight with amphetamines is dangerous and unhealthy. Aside from the very real problems of addiction and mental disorders, it is bad for your body. You will lose weight in the most unhealthy way, since all they do is suppress the appetite and speed up your metabolism so that you burn calories faster. THIS IS NOT HEALTHY, IT WON'T EVEN MAKE YOU LOOK GOOD.

If you want to lose weight then eat properly and exercise. That's the only healthy way to do it and ultimately you'll look sexy, instead of sunken-eyed and tired.

losing weight

No, you are right that Adderall isn't different form of ritalin, but I was searching for a way to say that they are similar. I personally take Concerta. Apparently ritalin can wear off after a while and cause a roller coaster effect -- I had it wear off, so my doc switched me to Concerta. So far so good.

You are also right about how to take off weight. It is diet and exercise, although with diet, if you count carbohydrates and fat you'll pretty much have the diet part wired. There's a cool website called FitDay where folks can keep track online of what they eat -- it's at www.fitday.com, and it's free. I am diabetic and I follow that diet -- I think it is the best way to lose weight in the long run -- no gimmicks, just balance, variety, and moderation.

I was dieting before I was put on adderall. It does supress my appetite, but it also helps me keep mental focus, no daydreaming. My loss of weight is mainly due to eating correctly, and eating several small meals a day.I keep Raw almonds in my truck/office(my truck is my office)NO More fast food, no more junk.My cholesterol has gone from 290 to 155,now that has taken a little over a year to do.With the Adderall my main problem is I get so wrapped up in working I sometimes forget to eat my almonds, I also think my metabolism has gotten faster, I tend not to crave sugars also. Some of this may be due to the supplements(vitamins and mineral) though.
I had lost 45 lbs on weight watchers three years ago and stopped going and got lax.I will never do that again, It's easy to gain weight, it takes hard work to lose weight.

As with all meds just cause it works for someone here dosn't mean it will work for you. Some can get more agitated with the adderall or other stimulants and others don't. I personally took Topomax for migraines hoping for the weight loss side effect and frankly it did nothing for either problem. It did however make my hair start to fall out .. oh that was oh so attractive :(

Btw, the person describing how adderral effects glucose and all that, that's nice and all, but the only reason I lost weight while taking it for 2 weeks was because I DIDN"T FUCKING EAT.

I do not have ad/hd, im just overweight.

thanks everyone
