Anyone know the best way to find and get rid of Ad-ware and Spy-ware.

Using the Literotica home page spy ware thing, i've got tons of it but can't seem to get rid of it all.

Thanks

Dadian

Try a search as I'm sure there are several posts about it already but the best programs in my experience are Ad-aware and Spybot. Spybot

Hope it helps . I just installed it a week ago. The first night I found 121 objects! They're in quarantine ... now i need to figure how to be rid of them !

Ad-Aware is the one I use, and it does a good job of clening up my system. To get rid of objects instead of "quarantineing" them, try this:

When you turn Ad-Aware on at the start screen press the "Start" button in the corner.

Then it asks you to "select scan mode". Make sure it's set to "Use default scanning options". Click where it says "Customize" right beside that. This brings up your scanning options menu.

All the different options will be listed down the left. Click the "general" tab.

The first set of options listed under that should be "Startup & Safety". The third option there says "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal". Just click that option off. Then click the "Proceed" button in the lower right corner.

Scan away as normal - you shouldn't have to set it up like this again as this is now the default option.

Hope that helps!

Hmmm

I've tried several. Ad Aware is the best I've found. You can d/l it at ZNet too...

I've also never had a problem with Ad-Aware, and recently upgraded to 6.0. I've been told that Spy-bot is better, but when I loaded it on, and tried it, I had non-stop problems. Some just with my system, and some with what it would, and would not, find.

Ad-aware, thumbs up. It's free, and you can find it at download.com

As far as I'm concerned, Ad-Aware (I also have 6.0) is a fantastic program. It works, it has never given me any trouble, and it's free. What more could you ask for?

If I recall correctly having used both programs before, spybot finds more kinds of stuff like registry items and such that microsoft and other big boy programs have on your computer to keep tabs on different things.

Deleting them is not always safe or the best option.

One can fuck up one's computer! (GoBack saved my ass again.)

Ad-Aware seems to work well and I always tell it to look for updates before I run it.

When you get to the list of what it found, check the items youwant it to remove and click "next" or "quarantine." Anything that is checked and NOT quarantined will be removed. Anything that is quarantined will be made inactive so you can determine if removing it will affect the function of some program -- like and unregistered version Winzip won't operate unless TSADBOT is loaded. (I go in periodically and delete the ads directory for TSAdbot so I don't get the ads, but I leave it installed so Winzip will work.)

Wow! Great thread, thanks! I wasn't even aware such a program was easily available, let alone free and highly recommended!

God I love Lit... :)

So, um, for those of us still running medieval computers... is there a verson that works on Windows 95?

Thanks guys,

Ad Aware pulled almost 200 pieces of spyware off my pc....

it's running faster now...thanks..

Heh. So the cynic in me wonders what kinds of spy/ad-ware are embedded in Ad Aware itself... Wouldn't that be ironic?

(No hope for us poor fools still running Windows 95? Suggestions other than upgrading?)

I think ad-aware 4.x worked on Win 95, but the pattern files haven't been updated for years and I doubt that you can find a copy.

Upgrading to Win 98SE is probably your best option for a variety of reasons -- you should be able to find a used copy of a Win 98 upgrade disk at a local computer store or thrift shop for a mere pittance.

You also shouldn't have as big a problem with spy-ware as those of us with later versions of Windows -- most of the spyware is also incompatible with Win 95 ;)

Holy gods I didn't realize how much spyware and similar crap can sit on the comp unnoticed!! I saw this thread and downloaded ad-aware on a whim, just to see, and it found 179 things of spyware! They all gone now, but it was definitely a surprise to find!

also

install a firewall program such as.. zonealarm etc...
in adition to the stuff mentioned earlier.

Simply because 90% of the programs on your computer can act as servers and usually do so if you do not prevent them.

icw...realplayer... windows media player etc all do that.

then for safety sake.. make your self a clean backup copies of all important information on your computer... make a CD.. or several
or get a second harddrive.

In case you need to reinstall your whole friggin system.
(done 3 times.. mostly due to fucked up windows shit)

Then install somehting like norton antivirus or norton works
just so that you can clean your system efficiently.
As well as repair problems that might arise later on.

and allways...ALWAYS delete your cookies manualy from all folders.
I go as far as to erase the index file. (open it with notepad select all delete and save)

Now then if you suddenly start getting popups from sites that do not use them or your conectionspeed in horibly slow someone might have changed your internet explorer setting or
smehow gotten a spywareprogram on to your computer.

Make notes of all such changes at any give time periods.
Then go to your computers file search engine and look at all files and modifications made to your system at the times you suspect that you might have been victimised.
delete anything suspicious and/or replace it with a backup copy.

hope that helps..
any questions.. just pm me

I have used Ad-Aware for a while and it works great but just as a warning to everyone, you shouldn't delete the registry key called "alexa." My one friend did this and it caused problems with Internet Explorer, but as soon as she restored it, it was fine.

I deleted the alexa file.. and everything was fine.

Although i always run the norton scans etc after deleting somehting.

So maybe that played a part.

As-aware by LavaSoft will find spyware and other programs like that which are slowing down your computer. Another one is Spy-bot search and destroy. Neither of these can touch the Huntbar program, but both will identify it. I found one program that seems to get rid of Huntbar, which is a keystroke recorder, but I'm not positive about the results yet. Norton doesn't touch any of the spyware programs. The alexa program is a webpage hijacker program that attempts to send you somewhere other than where you want to go. Getting rid of it is a good idea. Check out cnet for the how to an these programs. They can also be found on twocows.

:D

Its true that norton does not touch the spyware it self...
but you do get exelent registry editors.. and other maintenance programs that may help one deal with thedamage caused by sertain programs or their removal.
you will also get a virus scanner and a virus shield which can also protect your system against some of the shit that is out there.

If you can get the corporate edition of the virus shield its loads better than the "civilian version".

also you should go to your internet explorer settings and modify the security settings there.
Sometimes disabling some of the java aplications also prevent spyware programs from functioning.
so go to
tools---> internet options--->security---> custom level and click away.

Also place the privacy setting on a medium high level just for the hell of it.

and always make backups of your system.

For cleaning out your reg use I use tracks erasor can be set to clear out on pc startup or when you close explora

also you can Mark sites to save certain cookies eg lit so it saves your logon
