Active Editors - July 2009

As is typical, my regulars are keeping me busy.

However, I'll browse the forum to pick up anything I can fit in.

If someone prefers, shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

While Colin and Brian on their ship protect their Countries interests and get to see the wonders of our world. With a finale that will fill your heart and raise a few tears. Learn what the quotes, ‘Love Conquers All’ and ‘True Friendship Last Forever’, really mean.

Writing is one of many projects I have started in my retirement to keep me busy as my wife has a restaurant here. My real name is Raymond Smallshaw; I was born in Liverpool and served over 23 years in the Her Majesty Royal Navy as a boy of 16 and as a man till I retired at 40 in 1988 as a Chief Petty Officer Submariner with a naval pension. 5 years ago after being involved in a road accident I retired. I am now 61 years of age and I am living in the Thailand with my young and beautiful wife Ooy (Watsana), my 15 year old step-daughter Triy (Sai) and my 5 dogs, Scott, Lek, Max, Big and Cookie, I live a near idyllic life here. I have two grown up children Aaron and Erica who live in the Devon and Cornwall, I also have a 15 month old Grandson called Finley. I want an honest literary agent who is willing to take me on and aid me in the improvement of my book, who has the ability to assist in the editing and enhancement of my manuscripts to make it that more readable mostly I want an agent who will become a friend and share in its triumph. I am writing Part 2 of Zebedee and I have a ideas for several other stories.

I think it unlikely that you will find a literary agent on here, or that you actually need one these days. I have 18 novels published and no agent.
Also you might get a better response from our editors if you switch on your Private Messages. Go to User CP (top left of this page) then click on Edit Options (in the left hand column) and then tick Enable Private Messaging in the second box down. Make sure that the next box down (Receive Private Messages only from Buddies and Moderators) is NOT ticked. Finally click Save Changes at the bottom of that page.

I agree with Snooper. Legitimate editors work on commission, usually 15 to 20 per cent of royalties/advances, and they know all too well that the only way to make a living is to find clients who produce many books that sell well. Very few agents will (or can) roll the dice on first novelists or other unknown quantities unless they see something that makes them think they've found the next Joyce Carol Oates. Indeed, it's probably easier to find a publisher than to find a good agent.

Too, be aware that agents are business people at heart and that they're driven by cash flow, not necessarily by love of either literature or writers. Placing manuscripts and negotiating the most lucrative terms possible is the raison d' etre of agents. They're not looking for friends, and they don't want (often don't have the time or the ability) to make major improvements in your manuscript. An agent may well suggest general changes in the ms. to make it more salable in view of current trends and/or needs at specific publishing houses etc., but they want to see well-written and very clean copy up front.

Of, course, there are "agents" who will be happy to schmooze with you, edit for you, teach you, and hang out with you if that's what you want, but they will charge 117 flavors of fees for every real or imaginary "service" they allegedly perform. Unless you're a masochist with very deep pockets loaded with unwanted cash, run away from this type just as fast as your feet will carry you.

Whether you search for an agent or handle your own submissions/negotiations, by all means get your copy as "bulletproof" as possible before you submit it to anyone.

Available till September - PM after

I'm available for editing duties till September when I resume college (took hiatus to serve in military).

After that, PM me and we can work something out.

I'm editing short fiction, preferably with a literary take.

Please, no novels as I'm editing my second novella.
