...on the front page of my newspaper?!?!?

I kid you not. This was on the front page of my newspaper (you might want to avert your eyes--this could cause blindness or at least a mild burning sensation):

http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2007-07/31013543.jpg

This front page, top of the newspaper picture went with an article titled They just keep on Trekking about fan films. FAN FILMS???

Look, I'm a geek and a fan, too, and I don't mind a puff piece or two on the front page...but not with a huge picture at the very top making it the "lead story"! A story about some trekkie making fan films in his grandmother's Pasadena home is not news! This is a story for the film/movie/entertainment section at best.

Has Rupert Murdock already taken over? Is no newpaper in the country safe? I want NEWS on my front page! Surely *something* happened in the world that's worth a front page picture. Get those Klingons off my front page! :p

Since some people have complained about all the Paris Hilton features, they have to come up with other unimportant news to distract the public with instead.

Duh!

3113, I agree with you entirely! While I love/d all this stuff as entertainment, I do NOT want it reflecting the demand/supply of our citizenry for "front page news" nor do I like the mindset from which a decision to put this on the "front page" emanates. It is INSULTING to say the least!

Wow, even for a weekend edition, that's really not frontpage stuff. Was there a major convention in town or something? ComicCon usually get some coverage when it's here in San Diego (although usually not anything beyond a small teaser on the front page I think).

Alas no! I could have understood if there'd been something as massive as Comic Con with thousands of people from around the world filling up every hotel in San Diego and big name people in gaming, television and movies descending on the thing. That at least has the vestiges of news (business, entertainment, traffic alerts, current events, an upset in the status quo....).

I mean, I could even understand the pictures they sometimes have of "universal" moments happening within the city. You know, kids dancing around sprinklers in record-breaking heat or a colorful image of some yearly city celebration with lots of local flavor. Pretty photography that reminds us that we're all part of the same "village" as it were, with a story about it on page 21.

But this...this was nothing. I mean, it was really, really nothing. The actual story was a front-page side-bar story about the growing popularity and number of fan films being made (this being films made on a shoe-string budget that take place in some established universe like Star Trek or Harry Potter. The film makers don't have permission to make such films, but they're allowed to so long as they don't profit from it). That was it. A story about how dedicated these folk are to these fantasy universes, to making their own films and how their numbers are growing. That's what deserved a top-of-the-front-page picture and accompanying story (granted it was to the side)

*burp*

Better than a picture of the local sport god's mistress.

Sports is not news... and if I were worshippeed and paid millions of dollars for playing a game I'd have a hot mistress too.

Two of them in fact.

You should have been living in New Zealand for the past few weeks. If WW3 broke out it would still come after the fucking yatch racing.

On the day parliament passed a new and draconian law restricting access of the media to parliament and heavily controlling what the media can and can not show, the leading news of the day was the yatch racing.

Also big in the news was the daughter of some has-been tv personality got done for cocaine possesion.

Why is the America's Cup such big news here? Because once, about ten years ago we actually won it! Yay for us.

But what do I care, I'm full of roast chicken.

I'd bang that klingon on the second row.

Well, I suppose if the Klingons had been yacht racing that *might* have been news

Maybe the newspapers were just obeying the new law

I think you people are overreacting here. They can't show Romulans on the front page, because they go about in cloaked ships. Ferengi are too ugly. That leaves Klingons.

I am only guessing that you live in LA?

Okay, I now read that you ARE in LA. I am not shocked nor am I surprised. I lived there for a mere 4 months in '88, yet heard it all (which was nothing) and saw it all (which was also nothing). The LA Times was immune to the goings-on outside Hollywood at that time and I am certain that they still are. There is nothing more important than a trekkie convention in L.A. news - don't you know that, damnit!

Vulcans? But they're boring.

Judging by that first guy in the front row, I'd say: Today is a good day to diet.
