Absolutely no inspiration.

Difficult without further details. However, you could think of your story as a prequel to the novel, a proofing ground for your characters - put them into a situation that defines them as to who and what they are or became what they are.

I'm currently making a start on my university final project - a creative writing and english degree - and the story can be 6,000 words (wish it were longer!) and about anything. I seem to have hit a stumbling block though. I have the world that I'm going to set my story in, and the characters; they're both things I've been working on for a while. I'm writing a novel with them, and now I'd like to take these people and this world and write my short story with them. However, i'm getting absolutely NO ideas. At all. Could anyone throw anything like an idea at me? Thanks in advance.

Don't worry, panic is a great focusing aid. Just wait till the last day to do it.

Take this as a light-hearted jest, nothing more, but I hope you plan on becoming a teacher with that degree. If you were a promising writer, you'd not be asking for our ideas. ;)

I think that idea of using it as a prologue to a character for the main novel is a great idea, i'm going to use that as a base to build upon, thank you. And to answer Kev, normally I don't have an issue coming up with ideas, but i've had at least 12,000 words to do in the past 2 weeks and I may becoming a little burnt out.

How's this - if you cant get your own ideas, then apparetly you do not deserve an English degree? Seriously. Here's one idea, it's actually from you:

It has all the workings of a sexual masterpiece, and that my friend IS YOUR STORY.

Well the point is that I have characters and settings, just no plots.

And I hardly think I don't deserve the degree because I have a little bit of writers block.

What the hell have they been teaching you?

Do you know how many wannabe writers here would love to have the opportunity to take a degree in creative writing? You should be embarrassed that you've basically wasted your time there not learning how to write.

You -- you student, you.

Well i've had no problem with the other.. *counts up*.. 100,000 at least words I've had to do over the past two and a half years. I know i'm very lucky to be studying this, and I love the course, I just appear to have a little writers block, and I thought I could ask a community of writers for help with this or some plot ideas. Thanks, anyway, to past_perfect for actually helping. And I'm in no way 'embarrased' that they haven't taught me anything, or they're teaching me the wrong things, because I know that they're teaching me good stuff, because I can look at what I've written over the past couple of years and see all the improvements. I'm guessing that none of you have ever had writers block, ever? Of course not.

You're welcome and best of luck with your story. :) It's always infinitely more difficult to work on something you have to rather than want to. That being said I'd better get back to my own dreary obligations. *sigh* ;)
