I was criticized last week for only mentioning some of the poems posted, even though I stressed that I was pointing out my personal choices.

That made me think:

Um... isn't that the whole point of the thread? To recommend poems that you find good/interresting/thoughtful and so on?

I always did that. And will do again whenI have the time, if you let me.

Recommend gems or review all? Discuss, poets.

Whatever you are comfortable with. There is an amout of dilution, when everything is mentioned. If 50 poems are submitted, what do you have, they can get that from the new poems section. One always has the option of submitting on another day.
Hence, my earlier objection to the mention of mine.
I do think there is an obligation to avoid excessive favoritism and glowing reviews, unless reason is given.
I think Rybka handled it quite nicely with flyguy's review, and the mentions had value.

When I first started I did them all...
That didn't last long for various reasons.
I always felt the reviews were for poems YOU thought were worth a read...the forum is open for anyone to suggest anything at any time...even if it's your own poem that no one mentioned.

That's my understanding anyway

Didn't we have this talk about 3 weeks ago on another thread, by the way?

Hey, Bud-monk, when are you going to turn your comments back on? I was going to leave a few.

and I mean that in a way, to one of the two here, that I felt has written things I wish I had.
(the other being, jd4george)

Well I inadvertently left them on for todays...which was just a fly-by poem for HST.
Nothing worth commenting on...basically troll bait
but feel free

you can always PM or email me
I almost prefer that at this point
I've had a few people do it and it shows me it really made them WANT to comment if they take that much time out of their lives.
plus
I always know who I'm dealing with in that way

There's often too many for one person to do them all. If someone wants to see them all they can just go to new poems, which most reviewers link to anyway.

I think the point is to recommend the ones you (the reviewer) likes best. It's just one person's opinion and anyone can recommend poems in the thread anytime, so if someone sees one (or more) they like that the day's reviewer hasn't mentioned, that person can always put it in the thread, too.

There will always be a new thread about poetry reviews. Several years ago, poems were reviewed the same way, for example, movies are. The reviewer would discuss poems that caught his attention--good or bad. I see nothing wrong with that as long as the reviewer makes constructive comments. I know some of us occasionally mention a mediocre poem, and we point out that it has potential, and we may even suggest an edit or two for improvement. This is a good way for us all to learn. Many writers are fine with that, and of course, we're all way too familiar with the ones who aren't. Well, that's too bad. Once your poem is presented to the public, the public owns it as far as reading it and commenting on it.

There are some poems that would be pointless to comment on. I think we know which poems. They're online for everyone to see but they're meant for one person. Or a poem by a novice who does absolutely everything wrong--this poet needs an email and not a public review.

The easiest thing to do would be have a disclaimer at the top of your reviews. Make it clear that comments about your review may be posted in the "to keep the review thread clean" and not on the review thread itself. You can even add that you do not accept any emails or PMs regarding this matter.

I didn't put a period after Mr just to piss people off...
and because i'm pretty sure Hunter would have never allowed himself to be called " Mister"
So..in my own way, speaking in Japanese terms, I added the " san" honorific to his name to show respect...but didn't use it correctly to show even more respect.

Make sense now?
:D

I like reviewers.....

They seem to be nice people with a good head on their shoulders. You
can't please everyone, but you have all pleased me through the year.
Even bad publicity seems to increase the number of viewers. I try to read a
lot of the stuff here. If I get behind I read the reviews to narrow it down for me.
If the review mentions every poem they have to mention some bad ones. I like
a view thats talks about the cream or the way out. Also, I feel bad for the
reviewer when someone posts 5 or 6 poems on the same day. And don't forget
reviewers that's sandspike, s-a-n-d-s-p-i-k-e.

I'd skip the coffee the next day and go for a Lucky Strike and a gatorade
nicotine and electrolytes
that's the ticket
