 I lost my USB drive with all the stories I've been working on....booowhooooo!

hoping you have backup somewhere...but dude, that sucks.

damn, and if anyone finds the thing...

They'd probably save the stories somewhere, delete the files and store music on it. It was a new 1 Gig drive. Damn! I don't feel like writing....I was so hyped to continue working on a story I had on it. Did a little during lunch today and could hardly wait to get home, and then....not in my pockets or my car. If I didn't think anyone would notice, I'd probably scream out loud.

I belive you!
I've always been kind of afraid to have one, for that reason- I lose everything.

I just clean the porn off my laptop and put all the stories I hadn't finished in one spot, so I could keep them safe from prying eyes.

I'm going to start writing now, because if I don't I might not for a while. Like falling off a motorcycle, if you don't get right back on, you may never ride again.

I feel your pain. I have an HP Pocket PC with Pocket Word that I use to write stories when I'm away from my laptop, mostly during breaks at work (yes, I am THAT obsessed, or rather loyal to my readers). I can't tell you how many times that I synchronized my Pocket PC with the laptop and copied an older file over a newer one. I still try and be careful but it still happens, the latest with Castle Keep 7 (which is now further delayed... sorry!)

And about 6 months back my old laptop crashed, with the loss of many ideas and unfinished stories.

COPING SKILL #1: How do I survive the trauma? The next version will be better, or so I am convinced.

Good luck. Been there, done that.

I have most of my stories on a CD on top of my monitor right now (I started two stories since burning it the other day). On top of that, I have most of them on my work and home PCs, because I have lost a lot of hard drives over the last few years.

If anyone needs a way of keeping files away from prying eyes, I suggest TrueCrypt, a free, open-source app that allows you to create an encrypted file that can be mounted as a virtual drive. You can also encrypt an entire HD partitition or a USB drive.

The way I use it is to first create a 700 MB encrypted file. I then mount the file as a virtual drive, i.e., it acts just like a separate hard drive, allowing me to save or write files to it. After I'm done with it, I dismount the drive and no one can access the contents without the password. The reason why I chose 700 MB as the file size is so I can burn it to a CD as a backup.

Thanks all. I just pounded out 1500 words on on my lap top. I have a few more small jump drives, so I'm going to keep them in both places, so I can work on stories when I'm not at home. I know better, but I felt confident that nothing would happen since I always kept it in my front pocket, but....shit happens. I really hate that it happened to me though.

I'm still hoping that I left it in my laptop at work, but I doubt it because I'm sure that I felt it in my pocket when I left.

Now you know how Gollum felt!

Glad you are back to the keyboard, and I hope your "precious" turns up......Carney

I just finished a third story, hoping to build back up a good list. It's hard opening a folder and seeing it nearly bare.

It started to rain, so I went out to my car to get my umbrella. I pop the locks and got my sun bleached umbrella from the back window. As I examined the discoloration, something caught my eye under the brackets for the driver's seat.

Oh happy day! My jump drive! :nana: :nana: :nana:
