It is about a woman that became pregnant at an early age. She lost contact with the kid's father and was forced to marry a very abusive man.
The child grows up to become a state trooper (or police of some kind), to protect his mother and other women that are in the position she was.
The last detail I remember is that he tracks down his father while on a conference in the same city, and finds him working in a bar. He confirms it when his father tells him the story about how his mother and him, bonded over playing on the pool table and off it.
