A Marine officer who led the service's only all-female recruit battalion was fired amid complaints of a toxic leadership environment — but her supporters say she was only trying to make the unit better by holding women to tougher standards.

Lt. Col. Kate Germano, the former commanding officer of 4th Recruit Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, was found to be "hostile, unprofessional and abusive," according to a command investigation obtained by Marine Corps Times. She was relieved for cause on June 30 by Brig. Gen. Terry Williams, Parris Island's commanding general.

But officers who served with her say she was a blunt reformer who spearheaded efforts to improve recruit training regardless of gender, and that a vocal minority in the battalion undercut her achievements. Germano's tactics, for example, dramatically improved range qualification rates for female recruits.

Those vocal minorities seem to control everything these days, don't they.

Improved performance and lost the job...wow. Good to see the military really cares about how well the troops are prepared for combat.

Maybe one of the minority could yell, "Stop shooting at me, this is too hard!" to the enemy.

No, she was "fired" for being "hostile, unprofessional and abusive," to recruits. the ends do not justify the means.

The Marine Corps has set standards on how to train female recruits(as they do with male recruits)and don't like loose cannons like this light colonel deciding that her way is better. Improved performance? By what standard and what means?

False metric. I will, and have in the past, stated that women are the equal of men on the firing line. That is one sport and/or military endeavor where there is no gender differential.

But if that is the only reason that can be brought forth in her defense, then it's a lame ass reason.
