It was around 8 p.m. when DJ Dominic Cruz (aka DJDC) stepped to his laptop and kicked off his playlist for the evening. Dinner was fantastic, the speeches by the best man and maid of honor were a little inside-jokey, but entertaining, and everyone enjoyed the mother/son and father/daughter dances...but now it was time for everyone to have a good time!
Yes, it was a typical wedding reception inside the ballroom at the upscale Parkside Hotel on this beautiful Saturday evening.
And as he watched his son, Josh, dance with his bride, Katy, surrounded by all the guests, Scott Miller sat at the bar with a beer in his right hand and a smile on his face. At 23, Josh was the younger of his two children that he had with his wife, Valerie, and he was also the couple's only son.
Josh seemed to have a different girlfriend every time the seasons changed throughout college, so when Katy remained a topic of conversation through Josh's senior year of college and into his first year of post-graduate life, Scott was convinced that his son had finally found the one. Josh had done well in college and gotten himself a good job out of school, so finding a woman as sweet and charming as Katy was...well, that was just the icing on the cake!
Scott took another sip of beer as the first song of the night transitioned to the second, and he began to reminisce about his own wedding almost 25 years before. He had "married up," as his friends told him at the time -- not only was Valerie stunning, but she was four years older than him!
Now with both of their children married, Scott was looking forward to spending more time with Valerie -- cruises, vacations, all those things that empty-nesters do. And someday, they'd be able to watch their grandchildren. That all would come in due time.
For the moment, though, Scott was ready to just have some fun. He downed the rest of his beer and made his way out onto the dance floor to let loose, wearing his tuxedo sans jacket.
It was clear that Scott, now 47, couldn't do the same things he could do in his 20s. He had put on a few extra pounds, which he managed to hide well. His short dark brown hair had begun to thin and his green eyes weren't as piercing as they used to be. But that easy-going, fun-loving personality never left him, which is why there were cheers upon his entrance onto the dance floor. He clapped and began to move to the music with the other wedding guests.
