Saturday I picked up a patient who didn't quite fit our usual clientel. Not only wasn't he an Oncology Patient he was from Korea. He spoke very little English but I still managed to yank his chain more than once. He and his family were more than surprised that I treated him just like I treated everyone else. (I even managed to get across my somewhat warped sense of humor.) We even talked a bit about food.

His family heard the comments about them as well as about me from the other staff members. They couldn't believe some of the comments, nor could they understand the fact that some people found my cooler a source of food for themselves. (My lunch vanished on Sunday.)

Today the patient was discharged but not before his family decided to make things right for me. They brought me in lunch as they make it at home. Lunch was one of my favorite dishes which made it even better.

Lunch started out with a soup who's base I wasn't able to determine. It was a thin clear broth but somewhere along the line it ran across some Garlic and a whole lot of hot peppers. It was tasty.

This was followed by Bulgogi, but Bulgogi as I've never had it before. Think paper thin slices of beef marinated in Green Onions, Garlic, Oil and some truly nasty peppers. Now stir fry this in oil infused with more Garlic and Peppers along with thin rings of Green Onions. This was served traditionaly on deveined Lettuce leaves with a spoonfull of Rice, some bean paste and a healthy dash of beautifully spiced traditional Kimchi. (Spiced of course with more Garlic, Onions and Hot Peppers.)

Lay out a Lettuce Leaf. Put down a spoonfull of Rice. Add a dollop of Bean Paste and a couple of slices of smoking beef. Top with the Kimchi and then wrap it up before popping it into your mouth. I was sweating as they opened the containers.

By the end of the meal I had gained a couple of pounds, my co-workers were looking at me in fear and I was good friends with the Korean Family.

Now this was my kind of thank you.

Oh and when the patient was discharged he made a point of climbing painfully from his chair to bow to me as an equal.

Doing right by someone who's ill and having a tasty lunch...sounds like a good day to me. I love hot and spicy foods, so that meal sounds delicious. :D

Now that's real good.
I could not have managed the spicy food, but the bow would make it all worthwhile.
