Did you know that there has been a considerable increase in the so-called "super bugs" that are resistant to all antibiotics? Seems we are overprescribed by doctors who give out too many prescriptions for antibiotic treatment for many ailments that don't really require them.
To compound the problem, the patients often fail to finish their course of treatment which allows the virus to survive and mutate into a "resistant" strain meaning that in order to kill it next time, you would need an even stronger antibiotic. We are running out of effective antibiotics and the worry is that an epidemic of untreatable viri will hit and we'll be defenseless against it.
Doctors are well aware of this growing problem but are placed in a rather untenable position of having angry patients in their offices demanding they be given a prescription for their ailments when the doctor knows that many times the best course to take is to do nothing and let the malady run it's course. People seem to feel that when they visit a physician they should always be given medicine for their complaints and if he refuses then he isn't doing his job and they are being short-changed.
But, Laurel, don't concern yourself with this. Just carry on with whatever it is you're doing!

An antibiotic is for bacteria, viruses are not biological organisms.
