Happy Valentine's Day to All

Thanks, Dirt. I shared something earlier today with a special friend and think others might enjoy it too.

I've worked really hard this week, stress and all, so of course today when I had so much to do in so little time before a 3-day weekend I woke up late. I rushed and called a cab to go my one and a half mile, all uphill, and was only 15 minutes late. I felt like shit when the cab arrived.

The driver was a big hefty African man. He was on the phone, seemingly perturbed, speaking a language I did not understand (later he spoke English as if he had learned it in Europe). I had to point out where he should turn so he got off the phone and apologized for not paying attention. He also had run a red light and a couple stop signs by then.

He had been speaking to his wife for the fourth or fifth time, he explained, and went on a gentle rant about "Why can't she tell me everything before I leave for work? She calls me all day long to ask me to get this or that, or to remember this or that. I ask her please tell me everything before I am gone."

I wasn't really paying attention, except to his lovely mellifluous, masculine voice. Suddenly I heard with some trepidation, "You know, sometimes a man just feels like tearing a woman to pieces ... (pause) ... and the next moment he wants to give her his bank account." He went on about how women are a gift from God, but men have to pay for it dearly. We laughed together, and I told him children are hard to live with too. He told me a lovely story about giving his two year old daughter a bath to help her sleep last night.

I asked her name and he told me he had named her after his mother, and his son after his father, so that he calls his children Mum and Dad. I love that, and will never forget this man who seemed to appreciate women profoundly.

Needless to say, I arrived at work feeling very good. I was made happy by a complete stranger for a few minutes.
