A United States Colonial Marine squad aboard USS Sulaco, accompanied by civilian advisory personnel, were sent to LV-426 to discover why the Terra-forming colony of Hadley's Hope had not been heard from.
When the Marines arrived, they found what one of the civilian advisor's, Ellen Ripley, had feared had happened: the colony was totally wiped out, save for one child, by an alien species previously encountered by Ripley and her crew aboard Nostromo. Contact with the Marines and their civilian advisors has been lost.
Another team of Colonial Marines has been dispatched to perform search and rescue operations. The team, aboard the starship Tarawa, arrives in orbit to find the colony of Hadley's Hope totally obliterated. While investigating from orbit and looking for the missing Sulaco, the Marines pick up a distress beacon from the other side of LV-426, on the same longitude and equatorial line as Hadley's Hope. It is discovered this distress beacon comes from 'Site B', a research outpost put in place some time after Hadley's Hope began operations. (This info will play out in the first part of the IC narrative).
The Predators have returned to LV-426 to once again farm the alien species for transport back to one of their game preserves. They find, however, humans have colonized LV-426 and prematurely awakened the alien queen. The Predators find the Hadley's Hope colony destroyed when the thermonuclear explosion registers on their sensors as they are en route, but they, too, hear the distress call from Site B.
Site B is over-run with aliens. Site B is a secret lab complex erected under careful scrutiny of the top-levels of Weyland-Yutani. You can imagine what the lab is for.
