Every year the organizers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans invite 55 racing cars to compete in their world-renowned event...

...they also annually reserve a 56th invitation for an entry that currently defines world automotive innovation. This year the organizers extended that 56th invitation to The Project 56 group and its DeltaWing creation.

The Project 56 group consists of the designers at DeltaWing Racing Cars LLC, the car builders of All American Racers (the company owned by 1967 Le Mans winner and American racing legend Dan Gurney), back-to-back American Le Mans Series championship winning racing team Highcroft Racing, and American Le Mans Series founder Dr. Don Panoz.

Michelin tires will shod the revolutionary racer and Nissan will power it.

2012's 24 Heures Du Mans takes place June 16-17.

Shoulda kept it black. Frickin Batmobile.

The DWing appeared in black at its Sebring demonstration run...

cars start in the afternoon and disappear off into the night.

For the next 10 hours, all you can see is headlights whizzing past in the darkness

"was that McNish in his Audi or Joe Bloggs in a Cortina?" you hear the crowd ask one another

"no clue mate. Can't see a bloody thing except a bunch of headlights.*Yawn* think I'll go to bed"

As a spectator, is this the world's most boring race?

Possibly, but good luck to the little guys since I guess everyone has to start somewhere
