A turn for the worse (closed)

Johnathan http://cdn.joystudiodesign.com/large/3/Male-Headshots-Photos-2013.jpg use to be his normal name. Now he went by Max and had finished his shift as normal. Well, one of them at least. He worked as a bartender near Hollywood, though he was assigned to the local vice squad. Currently, he was just Max, bartender extraordinaire who was helping find people selling drugs and engaging in prostitution. Though he did a good job at keeping both lives separate, it was a bit of a challenge to a degree.

He didn’t know why, but he had seen Anna several weeks ago. He had seen her get some clients from either inside the bar or just outside. For some reason, out of all the people he had seen, he felt somewhat sorry for her. There wasn’t a reason as to why he didn’t want to bust her or bring her in. It was also strange that she was in the apartment just above him.

As he checked his mail, he made his way to the elevator as he saw Anna come in. “Hey Anna,” he said as he held the elevator door open for her. “How are you doing this morning?” he asked as he decided to try to break the ice a bit more. “Did you want to join me while you ate your breakfast?” Max offered in a polite tone. He figured it might be a no, but there would be no shame in at least asking.

“No problem,” Max told Anna as the elevator stopped at the floor right under hers. “I’m off tonight if you want to just relax or get something to eat,” he said. Though he couldn’t remember the last time he actually had a real day off. While he wasn’t scheduled to work at the bar tonight, he would be helping some of the other vice people by identifying who some of the girls were. In actuality, it was probably part of the reason why Anna hadn’t been made yet.

The apartment was somewhat planned when he chose it. It wasn’t great by a long shot, however, it had a reputation of allowing people with sketchy jobs or pasts stay there. It was just a pure coincidence that his place was right under hers. It made it a bit easier for him to hear what she was up to, if anything. One of the few things he could never find out is if she worked solo or if she had a manager. Perhaps tonight’s info might be a bit slow and he can investigate that a bit more.

Max looked at Anna as she stayed in the elevator. He figured he probably had a semi-sad, disappointed look on his face. “Well, feel free to let me know if you change your mind,” he said sincerely. “You know where to find me,” he said as he waived to her as the doors close.

He was a bit curious to figure out what to do tonight when she went back to work. He did feel bad for her since he didn’t know the last time he saw Anna have a day off. As he ate his breakfast, he turned on his TV to get caught up on the local news. As was the case at times, when he knew she didn’t bring her work home, the upstairs was fairly quiet.

“Perhaps,” Max started to think to himself, “I should try to figure out who her pimp is. Maybe that can be a break that she would need,” he continued with his current line of thinking. He was wondering if he should request a few files of some of the local pimps in the area to see if she was even employed by one of them. He continued to watch some more TV before finally decided to get cleaned up and ready for bed. As he laid down, he almost fell asleep right away, not knowing how tired he really was.

The ability for him to get a good night’s sleep during the day wasn’t an issue. One of the good things of him going undercover is that he could afford to “sleep in” if he really wanted to. Not only were they cracking down on crime, they were also making some of the local bars, like the one he was working at, be more profitable. Just as normal, nothing of interest had happened while he was sleeping.

When he woke up he decided to get dressed in just a normal tee and jeans. As he headed out, he hadn’t seen or heard Anna upstairs. He figured either she got an early start or she was still sleeping. One of the most predictable things was she didn’t bring her work home with her; at least not yet.

While he was looking out tonight, he noticed that it was fairly quiet. He also didn’t see Anna, which he at least saw her once or twice by now. As he looked at his watch, he noticed that it was just before midnight. “I’m going to call it a night,” he told himself as he headed back to his apartment. He stopped and picked up some food. The only downside with his current schedule was that there wasn’t much to do between now and when he would normally get back in the morning.

When he got back, it was just about a quarter to 1AM. He put his food down and started to go to the fridge to get a beer. It wasn’t too long before he heard a knock on the door. His interest was piqued since he wasn’t expecting anyone tonight. “Who is it?” he inquired as he made his way to the door.

As he head Anna’s voice, he looked through the peephole to see that it was her. When he started to open the door he gave her a warm smile. “Hey, Anna, what’s up?” he asked as he tried to be a bit more casual.
