A truly pleasant surprise

I am known on my floor as the one who seems to be able to fix damned near anything. It got to the point though wher people expected me to fix their broken toys just because they wanted them fixed. I stopped accepting these little jobs.

A couple of weeks ago on of the R.N.'s came in with a sob story. Her Laptop, a tweaked HP had stopped working. It just wouldn't run. This was an R.N. who has never asked me for help and when she explained that she had some truly important information on her computer, (That she hadn't backed up,) I relented.

I brought it home and started looking at it. It took me almost an hour to find the problem. The connection between the Transformer and the computer itself was bad. The blads that made contact inside the female connector had spread so far that they didn't make contact with the male connector. (Bending these back is not an option, they are brittle.)

It took me a bit of work, and a lot of playing but I built up the internal connectors, as well as the male connector. (A bit of Computer Viagra?) I got it to work.

Two nights ago I E-Mailed her to inform her of this. Today I brought the computer in and gave it to her.

Instead of the thanks I was expecting, (Which is none,) she turned around and gave me a brand new Acer Aspire Laptop. (The same as the one I have.) (We're talking this thing was still in the box.) She informed me that because I had not only fixed her computer, but saved her files I deserved this.

To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.

Oh, this wors out nicely for me as my wife wants a Laptop.

I opened this thread in hope that your neighbour had apologised for being rude! Nice story though; good to know there are people like you, other than you, out there.

I opened it with the thought that the neigbor might have exploded.

Holy cow, a Laptop?! That's like, a lot of money . . . She knows you're married, right?

:rose:

Tres cool. :)

Pretty much the same thing happened to me a year ago, when a friendofafriend's laptop fried it's RAM bus, rendering it dead. He was desperate to get at the information on his hard drive; massive research notes, a book script, a four year genealogy project, and personal photos, letters et al.

I hotwired the hard drive and dumped the data to a portable disk. He was all over himself with gratitude, and asked what I wanted for the job. Eh...want? It was a 30 minute hack, and I'd be embarrassed to accept anything other than a "thanks".

Nevertheless, two moths later, when my own computer went ZAP in the middle of my thesis work and four days from a job dealine, he somehow got news of it, and the next day there was a spankin new computer delivered to my door.

I still feel weird using it though.

I haven't seen her since the other day. In fact her car hasn't been here. who knows, maybe she's disgusted?

Kudos, Cat! You're good people.

I guess the Christmas spirit is with us year round; with you anyway.

OT, sorta: What's this Acer laptop like to use?

I was thinkin' of gettin' a Dell laptop, but I'll look at other ones.

Just wonderin'.

Peace.

Maybe she did explode.

(The neighbor, folks - not the good woman who so generously rewarded a good man.)

(Hey - the event that's the subject of this thread could be kind of the happy ending of the screenplay. :) )

I like my little Acer. It's screen isn't as big as many, (It's only a 14 inch) but that's fine by me.

It seems faster than my older desktop and is easy to use. I haven't noticed any problems with it.

Other here may know more about them than I do.

Thanks Cat!

Didn't mean to do a drive-by post, but I'm havin' some work done at the old hacienda and they keep cuttin' off the power on me.

I'll check out that Acer laptop. Sounds cool.

Peace.

I use one at work.

On the upside...

* Quality keyboards, an important thing to me.
* Well designed for mobility. Although they weigh the same as most, they don't feel chunky.
* Decent performance for the money.

On the downside...

* Their screens are generally not top notch. Might be better on new models, but those I've seen were barely this side of OK. If that's important, HP or Sony is your best bet.
* In Europe, they're a slow bitch to get repaired, but I've heard that's better in the states.

Glad I checked this thread again.

Thanks for the technofeedback, Liar.

I'm just lookin' for a beater 'puter that I can take on the road when I travel.

Don't wanna get internet and Lit. withdrawl (lol).

If the price is right, this Acer rig sounds like the way to go.

With my lousy eyesight, screen quality isn't a big issue with me (grin).

But if it'll handle MS Word, at least I can write. Or try to.

I'll check it out.

Peace.
