I have no clue. Still, Hallowed Eve's idea has promise. Something like this:

Protagonist is narrating story. He hears a very brief set of sighs, goes off on a tangent about his fantasies about what she was doing, scene pans to her room, where she is nursing her leg from banging it.

Alternatively, he confronts her, goes off on his fantasies and tries to get her to tell him what happened, they have sex, then she finally tells him she'd just banged her leg.

Agreed, but an alternative is for that "whole story" to be the guy telling it to his neighbor rather than just imagining it. Neighbor can burst his bubble after she screws him in that case
