*********************************************************

Mrs. Shirley Johnson Grade School Teacher
age; 44

Family: Husband Mr. Robert Johnson Sr. age 48, Son Robert Jr. 21, Daughter Amber age 19.

*********************************************************

Vacation Island, small town, country club & golf course, miles of beaches and rental houses and cabins.

The Woods family was planing a family vacation on the island and had rented a beach front house with everything including a pool and hot tub. At the last minuite, Dr. Susan Woods a prominent pediatrics physician was appointed Head of Pediatrics at the hospital and she cancelled saying she had to remain in the city due to her new appointment. Their children elected to remain at home in the city too. The rent on the house was paid and was non refundable at this late date. So James Woods Sr. went alone.

The Johnson Family also was going to vacation at the Island and was able to get the last rental house available. They paid the rent and also at the last minute, Mr Robert Johnson, CFO of a small electronics firm learned about a merger and had to remain in the city to take cafe of the company's financial matters. The children also choose to stay in the city. Mrs Shirley Johnson needed to get away after a hard year at school and she decided to go and to catch up on her reading and preparing her lesson plans for the next school year.

In the interum, the house that the Johnson's rented had a fire and was a total lose. (The house was a dilapadated building)

*** IC ...

Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Woods left their respective homes on the same day and traveled the same roads to the island. Their paths were soon to cross. They arrived at the ferry at about the same time. She was first in line and his was near the end and would be the last vechile on this trip. The crossing over to the island went without any problems and the ferry unloaded it cargo of vacationers onto the island.

Mrs Johnson only went about a half mile when her car just stopped. Died right there and would go no further. She let it roll of to the side of the road and then tried to hail passing cars for assistance.

I, Mr James Woods approached and saw a woman trying to flag down someone and since I was in no hurry, I pulled over and stopped in front of her car. I got out of my car and walked backto where she was standing.

"May I be of help?"

Shirley couldn't believe her luck, a rented car and a breakdown. She unlike most modern women did not have a cell phone. She hopped out of the car and opened the hood which did her no good because she knew nothing of engines. Her long raven hair fell down her back to her waist as she took the clip out of her hair. Her blue eyes looked at the traffic as she adjusted her clothing on her trim, shapely body. She believed she would have to look appealing to get a car to stop. She wasn't sure that would work at her age. She went close to the road and started waving cars down with the idea in her mind that with her luck she would get a nut.

When a car stopped she put a smile on her face even though she was scared he might get killed or worse. The tall man that approached her was imposing but she held the smile.

"May I be of help?"

She thought for a moment what she needed.

"Do you have a cell phone my rented car broke down"

"No, I'm sorry, I only have one for local back in the city. But if that's a rental, there are none out here on the island. Come on, we will find a telephone in town. Let's put you things in my SUV, there is plenty of room and you can go to where you are staying and they can deliver you another car there. Otherwise you will probably lose the rest of the day.

"I'm sorry, my name is James Woods Sr. and I am here on vacation. Let me give you a hand with your things." I open the back of my suburban and move to her car.

Total disappointment came over Shirley's face as the man told her he didn't have a cell phone. Before she could say another word, he had figured out what she should do and how she should do it. She was overwhelmed by his commanding way. She watched him SUV and moved to her car.

"Listen, I can't put you to all this bother, if you would stop at the nearest gas station and tell them where I am, they can take care of things"

She opened her purse and walked over to him with a paper in her hand.

"See, I am going here, I cant ask you to go out of your way"

She flashed the address under his nose.

"I don't know where it is, I fingured I find it when I got to town. By the way I am Shirley Johnson and I too am on vacation"

She noticed a smile come over James' face.

"This is your first time on the island I see. Well the gas station is on the other side of town and we both have to stop at that address. It's the real estate and rental office. I have to get my key to my rental and so do you.
So you see, like I said we are going to the same place.

I put the last of her things in the back of the suburban and went to the front passenger door and opened it for Shirly Johnson. I give her my best smile along with a slight bow, "My ladies ride is ready and I promise to drive carefully." I get in on my side and slowly pull out into the travel lane and head for town.

"I really don't mind, we are going in the same place and you needed help. Like I said, I am on vacation and for the first time without my family. My wife is a pediatrican at the hospital who was promoted to head the departmentand cancelled at the last minute. The kids elected to stay at home with there mother. I think they just didn't want to come here to the island. Dullsville..... if you know what I mean, espically for young adults."

In no time at all we were pulling into the real estate parking lot and I park near the front door and we went inside. We gave the receptionist our names and we sat down to wait. It looked as if we were at the end of the line.

"While we wait, tell me a little about yourself."

She smiled at him, she felt quite at ease with him which was a surprise. Shirley wasn't actually a people persons she had a lot of mistrust built into her personality. Oh she was pleasant enough but she did not usually tell outsiders her business but James for some reason was different. She found herself telling him her life story.

"Well we have a lot in common, it seems, I am married also and my husband is the CEO of a small electronics company. There was talk of a merger and suddenly it is to be so. He could not leave and like your children, mine also elected to stay home. I guess they figured if Dad could get away with it so could they. But I need the rest and time to set up my lesson, oh I forgot to tell you I teach the 3rd grade back home. So here I am alone and I think I got the better of the deal. To relax without worries is a true vacation"

She chuckled as she finished and smiled at James again.

I sat and listened quietly to Shirley as she told her tale of woe. She had a very nice voice that I could listen to. When she had finished her story, she smiled at me and a receptionist can down and we went up to the main desk.

Realtor .... Waiting was a silver haired lady. "Mr and Mr Johnson?"

"No, This is Mrs Johnson and I am James Woods. What seems to be the problem Mam."

Realtor .... " Ther was a fire on the island last night and the rental property for the Johnson family was burned down to the ground. A complete loss, but the sad part, there aren't any places available. That has never happened before. It doesn't get any better, the people that do the refunds will not be available onto Monday.

"Well ad another problem for Mrs Johnson, Her rental car is dead on the road leaning to town from the ferry.

"Now my name is james woods, her is my receipt for my rental and I hope my hasn't burned down too! Finish with Mrs. Johnson, I can wait.'

Shirley's stomach turned as she relized she had no place to stay. Monday was a long ways off and even if she went back to the airport, she might not get a flight right away. She was in a pickle that was for sure. The car, hopefully she can get a car right away.

"I rented my car from the place your agency suggested, can I at least get a car right away.

The real estate agent picked up the phone and explained what happened to her client's car.

"I see, I see"

She put down the phone and told Shirley that they would pick up the car but had no other cars available, maybe by Monday. Shirley was so upset she could not speak. She paled as she looked at the woman.

I listened to the exchange and I could see that Mrs Johnson was visiably distressed. I suggest that you take a seat and we could figure out what we could do to help you put. But first you would have to calm down and relax.

The woman behind the counter and said she had the keys to my rental and did I still need four sets. I informed her I would just need two sets. The clerk said the house was ready to move right in. I thanked her and returned to where Mrs Johnson was sitting.

I sat with you and we talked about some options and they all did not seem very good or to address your needs. That is when I got the idea. I was still holding the house keys in my hand and here was the answer for the weekend at least.

"Mrs. Johnson, Shirley, I had rented a large beachfront house with three bedrooms and a servants quarters. I needed four beedrooms and now I only need one. You can stay at my place for the weekend and I would drive her to the car rental or airport or even back to the city."

Shirley listened to James as he made the offer to let her stay at his rental. She wasn't to sure of this but did not refuse right away. She thought of her options and realized this was the only option but to stay with a man that she did not know was to say the least obsurb. To sleep on the streets would be worse. She knew she would have to do it.

"Thats very nice of you, James, I will have to take you up on your invitation as where else can I go"

She realized how bad that sounded after she said it but had no way to take back her words.

She smiled at him hoping he hadn't taken offense.

"Shirley, let me drop off my things at the house and I treat you to dinner and I'll take you back to the mainland. There's a Holiday Inn not far from from the ferry. You can stay there and I'll pick you up monday to get your car or take you to the airport. Come on let's go"

We walk out to my suburban and I open the door for you and you get in. I drive out of town on the beach road to the end and then a private road to the lone beach house. The nearest House was a half mile in either direction.

I pulled into the drive, unlocked the gate and drove in and parked under the car port. I unlocked the house and we went in. It was very neat and uncluttered. We looked around the Kitchen, livingroom, diningroom, den, two bedrooms and the servants quarters on the first floor, with two bedrooms on the second floor and an observation deck.

We stood on the observation deck and looked up and down the beach. The view from up her was great and I would have a lot of material I could paint from. "You know Shirley, I may break my mental block and start improve."

"I promised you dinner, I'll move the rest of my things in later. I am getting hungry anyway." Downstairs we looked at the servants quarters and they were very simple but looked comfortable. "I think you could have been comfortable here, you could have a nice vacation here too." I close the door and turn to leave, "By the way have you seen the pool and hot tub" and we walk over to the glass sliding doors and look out at the enclosed area with the pool and hot tub and a beautiful garden.

"Shirley, I think it's time to go. Your are right, we can't afford to do this!" Again I turn to leave heading for the front door.

Shirley started to feel guilty because she found James to be a decent man. She wrapped her arms around her stomach and made an apology of sorts.

"James, I am sorry about what I said awhile ago, I didn't mean it like that. I know you are a decent man and would not overstep our boundaries. If the offer is still open, I would like to take the servants quarters. Its like a little apartment and I could be happy there probably for my whole vacation. I will understand if the offer has been revoked, I trip over my mouth a lot"

She turned to look at the scenary and sighs.

"It is beautiful here"

"Shirley for you the offer will always be open. You are too hard on yourself. Why not give yourself a break and take a chance on life. I bet you did once when you were younger. You're married with two I assume vere wonderful children." I stood there and shuffled my feet, not knowing what to say next.

"You know, I promised you a dinner. Eat first or finish getting the rest of our things out of the car.? I vote dinner!"

Shirley knew James was right, her life was too serious. She had lost sight of fun, her bringing her work on vacation plainly showed her she had become dull.

"Your right, James, I am going to loosen up and have some fun on this vacation. When I get home, I still have half the summer to get my lessons set up. Lets go have dinner and then get our things into the house"

James smiled, took her arm, she did not draw away, and lead her to his car.

"I open the door to the SUV and assited Shirley into the front seat and closed her door. In not time at all I was in the cab and ready to go. I returned to town the same way we came out. The private road to the Beach Road. I drove a little slower this tim so Shirley could get a good look around. In town at the major intersection I turned left for the Lagoon and Harbor.

" THE BROWN PELICAN AND ANCHOR INN " Home of good food, good drink and good clean fun. "Shirley, you're going to love this place, best seafood place on the island. If not into fish he makes some of the best pasta I 've ever eaten. This is it, our table awaits in yonder establisment of the islands best seafood cuisine. I park the Suv and come around and open your door and take your arm and we walk proudly through the front door.

Shirley is dressed fine but I forgot my jacket, the hostess comes out with this bright lime green blazer with there logo on the pocket. I think I hear a little chuckel from you when I put it on. I'll be, it fits. Table for two I tell the hostess and she replies, The Verranda, The Bar, Dinningroom with bad and dance floor and the third floor observation floor, very quiet.

I look at you, "I picked the Place, you can choose the room! So what room does Shirley Johnson choose for her dinning pleasure?

Shirley found Jame's banter quite amusing as he drives along the highway. She looked out the window, saw wonderful scenery, commented on it to James. All too soon the drive ended and James who it seems was always the gentlemen hurries to assist Shirley out of the SUV.

She was getting use to his proprietory ways toward her. His hand grabbed her arm gently guiding her into the lovely restaurant. She had to chuckle at the look on Jame's face when it was discovered he needed a jacket. The lime green jacket that they presented to him made her cover her mouth least the who place hear her laughter as his face was so funny when he looked at the horrid thing.

Being the great trooper that he was he put it on. She was happy that it fit him, she did not know how many indignities he would take. Then the hostess listed the different areas to chose from and Shirley was surprised when James wanted her to pick.

"Well, how about the third floor observation floor so we can oversee our subjects"

She laughed at her little joke as did James, he caught her arm again as the hostess showed them to the elevator, all three got in and off they went to the third floor.

When they stepped out of the elevator, the room that she had chosen took her breath away, it was decorated in soft blues, candlelit an extremely romantic setting. The hostess lead them to a table that surprisingly was in an alcove, it even had a door to close for privacy. She had never seen such a place in her life.

James seated her and she looked down at all the activity she felt his eyes upon her. She turned to him and smiled.

"This is quite a lovely place, James"

"Thank you my lady, my motto is "Always to please" and today I am taking it seriously," and I smile at you. Our waitress arrives and we order drinks and she tells us the specials and leaves us the menues. We look over the menues and comment on the offerings.

"You know shirley, the grilled grouper and salad sounded just great, what do you think? About this time the waitress returns with our drinks and askes are we ready to order.

"Shirley?"

She chuckled at his charming ways. They looke into each others eyes until the waitress asks what they wish to drink. They listen to the list of specials that the waitress is rattling off and then check out the menu.

Shirley wasn't sure if she would like the fish but as the waitress comes and James is demanding for an answer, she caves.

"Yes what you suggested sounds good to me"

We give the waitress our order and we sit quietly and sip our drinks. "If you look over that way towards the ocean, our place is just past those red and green lights." I also point out other places we passed today as we made small talk.

"Shirley, what changed your mind this afternoon. I mean, we are both married with a family and responsibility. You could be sitting alone in a room at the motel and I would be downstairs at the bar with a double. Yet here I am sitting in a romantic setting with you and feeling like a teenager on his first date at a real resturant." If the lighting was better, she could see my hands trembling as I reached for my glass.

She thought for a moment.

"I changed my mind because I realized you were a decent man offering me a safe haven. Its not easy to find a person your comfortable with. To be alone in town I think would not be safe at all. You were straight forward from the start and gained my trust which isnt easy if you listen to my family"

She looked around and nodded.

"It is romantic isn't it but it is all an allusion as what you said is correct, we have families and responsibilities so I don't believe anything will happen"

She smiled at him.

I smiled back, you were right, nothing was going to happen, even here in this romantic setting. "Thank you Shirley, I appreciate that. I have been told I am to straight forwad and don't take no for an answer."

Our dinners arrive before any more can be said. We order more drinks and we eat, enjoying the food and drink and the company of each other. The food is delicious and I clean my plate, I was also very hungry.

"How was your meal, Shirley, I hope you enjoyed it? Now, are you leaving on Monday or are you going to stay the summer? I have the house to Labor Day weekend. If you could, stay."

The meal was good, Shirley was glad she had taken his advise. They chatted and laughed and drank. She was feeling pretty good, the drink had relaxed her as James asked her plans.

"I am going to stay with you James, I trust you, I really do"

Her words were a bit slurred.

"I think we best be heading back now. We have a lot to do back at the hose." I paid the waitress and we finished our drinks and I assited you to the elevator and then out to my SUV. I helped you get into the car and closed the door. When I got in on my side , you hadn't put your seat belt on and so I had to lean across you and pull the seat belt across. I could feel your nearness and your femine smell. I hesitated, but I finally clicked you belt closed.

"You don't drink often, do you Shirley?" I asked on the drive back to the house.

Shirley had a nice soft glow on, she was very content. As James pressed against her she did not protest but sat dorsal as he clicked the seatbelt around her.

"No, hardly ever do I drink but tonight was a special occasion, now wasn't it"

Her smile is lopsided as she opens the window.

"Its hot in here, James"

I look over to you, "We will be back at the house shortly, it is only a short drive." I concentrate on the road and we arive back at the house safely and I park under the car port.

I open your door and help you down from the SUV and into the house and let you sit on the couch in the living room. I leave you to bring in your lougage and I carry them upstairs to the master bedroom. I return to the living room and find you still resting on the couch.

"Shirley, Would you like to take a swim or get a good nights sleep.?
