Oh where to start.....

Yesterday my 45-year-old father went in for a treadmill test or something and his heart rate started to rise. Now his heart rate has been high anyways, but they said he needed to go into the hospital for some more tests. He called me and said not to worry, but I can't help it. He is very overweight and has smoked for the past 31 years. This makes me scared that possibly he either has diabetes, lung cancer, or some other illness. Last night I nearly cried my eyes out just thinking of it. Fortunuately, I have had good friends like Bossy to talk to and support me throughout all this. I am sorry to take up space, but I just had to let something out.

Jeff be thankful they caught it in time..hopefully he will change his habits and stop the damage...you may want to call his doctor's yourself, since you are not able to go with him to the visits..that way you can have a good explanation for what is going on...take care of yourself.

Jeff, I hope everything turns out OK for your Dad. This may not be the best way to cheer you up, but here goes.

I am the same age as your father, I have type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and I am considerably overweight. I am also very active and in excellent health. An elevated heartrate on a stress test is not necessarily serious. Diet and exercise, and especially quitting smoking can work wonders for a man of his/mine/our age.

I play softball, football, tennis, and raquette ball. I ski almost daily in the winter. Diabetes, cohlesterol, and being overweight do not prevent a person from being active and healthy. Your father has a lot of years to look forward to,as do I.

Good luck, and let me know if I can be of any help.

Hey Jeff, I know that feeling you have, I lost may dad to cancer a few yrs ago. And he didn't know he had cancer untill it was too late to do anything. And about two yrs before that he had Brain surgery to remove a blood clott. and i have a freind who is living with Diabeties, so Maybe If you want to talk I can help answer some of your question or just listen too. But I'm here for you tho. :)

Damn Jeff, sorry to hear about your father.

I know that feeling of being helpless to do anything. However, a bit of hard advice if I may, don't become overwrought UNTIL you get the diagnosis. If you can, call the doctor and ask him to explain what's up in layman's terms and then ask him what you can do to help. Your dad is still young and may be able to get everything back to normal. At least I hope so!

On the positive side, this type of situation can help bring families together. It also may give you a chance to talk about things with your father that most of us put off until it's too late.

Anyway, I know where your at, because I am my father's full time (24/7) caregiver. He's 83 and has a multitude of health problems, so I do know how stressful your situation is.

By the way, I am the same age as your father and have found that exercise (walking is really good) and one aspirin a day are helping to keep my heart healthy. Ask your dad's doctor about the aspirin thing.

Best wishes for your father's speedy recovery and a return to normalcy in your life. Feel free to e-mail me if you need someone to chat with (gkibby@earthlink.net).

Hi Jeff,

I want to say how much I appreciate everyone's wishes and kind words. They mean alot and from the bottom of my heart I thank you.

My dad called me from his room this morning, and he sounded somewhat like he was hooked up to a bunch of stuff. But he seems to be doing ok so far. He has an "EPS" coming up. I forgot what that is but so far he is doing ok. I hate to think he would wait until now to quit smoking, but if he does quit that's all that matters.

Once again everyone I thank you for all the kindness and support. I owe ya plenty.

A little update on my pops.

He's doing fine, all the tests look good, but they may keep him through NEXT WEDNESDAY! WTF? It's like I am bored out of my damn mind waiting for him to come home. And seeing as I am a bit lonely living by myself for now, who wants to visit me? ;)
