Kacelynn lived the typical life. She had a 9-5 job that barely paid the bills was taking night classes for college. Sitting at home on another Friday night she decided to surf the web. She really needed a life she told herself over and over again. But this was all that she had. Her apartment, her job, college, and then her car. Oh her car was her baby, she had a 1979 Trans am gold on black and she loved it. But she sat there at her computer desk browsing web site after web site. She was bored, turning on some music she returned to her home page yahoo.

Seeing an article about sending letters over to the troops she decided why not. Looking at the site she picked out a random name and decided that she would write him a letter, what was the worse that could happen he wouldn't respond, or maybe he would and she could gain a friend out of it or at the very least a pen pal. Jotting down the address she flicked off her computer and went and sat at her table with a tablet of paper and her pen.

She didn't address the letter with his name, as the website had not actually given a name at least she hadn't thought that it was. She sat there though staring at a blank page wondering how to start it. The article stated that the troops on there had no one back home to write them, or to care for and needed to gain someone who they could feel connected to. She pondered on how she should begin her first letter to her new random friend.

Dear Mr. Random,

Hi my name is Kacelynn I am writing this letter because I saw in an article that you needed someone back home to write to. So here it goes. Hm where to begin, well I am from Virginia, I was not born here but I live here now. I am 23 years old and don't really have much of a life. So I do apologize as I can not write you and tell you about the fun times at the bars, but if you so choose I can promise to write you more letters as I have more than enough time to do so. But besides that I figured you could use a friend, and maybe it would help you sleep better knowing there is someone back home who cares about you. Although I dont know you I tend to care about a lot of people. But anyways I do hope you get this letter and I hope that you enjoy it at the very least.

Lets see a little about myself I stand at 5 feet and 3 inches tall, I weigh about 120 pounds and I have long blonde hair. No I am not your typical blonde but I do love my hair. :D so lets see what else I am single and have no kids. I live on my own and am doing what I can to make my life better. I honestly think what you guys are doing is absoutely amazing, and it is sad that not more people think so. I know that the hype of the war has calmed but that does not mean that we should forget the risk that are men and women are making and so many people have, for that I am sorry. But now you know that there is at least one person who does care, and does respect what you are doing.

I pray that you and all your men come home safe and sound. I hope that things are not as bad over there as they were in the beginning. But before I continue to ramble about such a sad topic let me try to make this a bit happier. Hm let me see. I am going to be honest with you here I have no idea what to write to you, I have never met you, I dont even know your name. But I figured I would give it a try. I have few friends, and really dont get out enough. But hey now I am doing something constructive with my time. :) I do hope you do not think I am crazy and I do hope to get a return letter from you. I hope that all is well and I hope if not anything else that this letter will put a smile on your face nameless one.

Your new pen pal,
Kacelynn

With that she folded the paper placed it in an envelope and stuck it in the mail box. She had to sound like an idiot in the letter she thought to herself. She truly did hope that he would respond though, she wasnt sure why she had such high hopes of this stranger but she did. Maybe it was because of all the sadness she had seen and needed someone to show her that there were still good men out there because that was something that she was beginning to question highly. With a sigh though she went to bed and would await his letter.

Kacelynn,

Well I have to say your letter did put a big old smile on my face. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a letter to someone that you do not know at all. Additionally thank you so much for your words of encouragement.

I know that there are many people that support what we are doing that do not have a big a megaphone as some people that do not support it. Even for myself I have come to a whole different set of reasons for loving what I am doing over here. I first enlisted on September 12, 2002 with the purpose of helping to bring to justice those who masterminded the attack on our soil. Then It shifted to being proud of democracy. For a while I was disillusioned by the all of the political and economic reasons why we are still in this war so I essentially lost most of my motivations. Being in Afghanistan is a little different though. I see women and children who are now having the opportunity to learn how to read. I see how scared that makes the terrorists because they know the power of education. This has become my new driving passion and motivation for being here.

Anyway a little bit about me. I am 26 and have been in the military for 8 years now. I am a staff Sargent and have a company of 8 brave young men. Most of them have families and will more than likely be done after this deployment. I like to kayak, rock climb, and play video games. I get the whole thing about not being one to party and that kind of thing. I mean dont get me wrong I love to have fun I just find other things to do.

No sure what else to say.... how about some questions for you mamn:
-Whats your favorite movie (or one of them)
-What do you do for fun
-do you like any sports
-who is your favorite musician
-got any bros or sisters

I think thats it for me for now. Please be patient with me and delayed responses. If I have a mission i may be out for a few days.

Peace,

Ben

Kacelynn,

I have thought about you often the past couple of days despite the fact that I really hardly know a think about you. I guess the fact that I know that someone out there is thinking about me is very comforting. I just want to say thanks for your letter.

I may take a while to respond to your letter as I have a mini mission to a pretty remote village over the next couple of weeks. I was hoping that they could drop us in but instead we will be hiking I think.

Hey I hate to ask but if you ever come accross some cheap candy or. Small kids books that could be helpful.

Grace and peace,

Ben

Dear Ben,

Sorry that it took me so long to write, things have been a little crazy for the past few days around here. I hope that all is well over there. I have thought about you a lot and everyone that is over there. I saw the attack that was on the news, are you ok, were you there? I hope that everyone is ok. Please let me know as soon as you can.

But again I am sorry that it took this long for me to return your letters. You seem like such a good guy. So why don't you have anyone back home to write to? I understand if that is to much of a personal question for you to want to answer. So anyways lets see back to what you had asked me in your letter.

My favorite movie, that depends on what kind of movie honestly and even then I'm not sure. lol. Hm well lately for fun I have been writing this guy, that I have never met before. I think so far that it is going good as he actually wrote me back but I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens there. Now on to sports there is only one that I actually follow and can say that I understand and that would be hockey all others I'll watch but I will have no clue as to what is going on. I know that sounds bad but hey at least I am honest. My favorite musician hm that is a good question let me get back to you on that one and family well I did at one point but that conversation will have to take place another time, I'm sorry its just a little personal is all..

But I do hope that all is well and that things are going as good as they can for you guys.

Sincerely,
Kacelynn

Kacelynn,

Hey good to see a letter from you. Things are about as good to be expected here. I was actually out during the recent wave of attacks. However it is always interesting the timing of information that you get in the USA and the ways it is reported. I think you have mid term elections going on right now... so yeah there is always some kind of digging that goes on around here when political fires get heated back in the states.

Honestly we are actually fairly well prepared for attacks from various insurgents. Its the ambushes from snipers and the mines that are so damn scary. Recently they have started packing used hypodermic needles and razors on top of mines. Making us afraid that we are going to get infected with AIDS or hepatitis.

You asked about who I have to write to back home. I have been at this for a number of years now so most people have kind of lost interest. I had a girlfriend whos feelings of patriotism and support gave way to loneliness. I have a brother who serves in another branch of the military so its hard for us to ever connect. My mom is very proud and I get letters from her. My dad.... is a long story. Lets just say if you ever see a man holding a cardboard sign asking for money for a beer go ahead and buy him one.

I kind of like hockey, I actually met Marty Turco, he is a the goalie for the Dallas stars.... Pretty cool guy. Hmmmm I hockey chick huh?

Hey who is the mysterious person you are writing letters too?

My favorite movies right now are dumb and dumber, fight club, the Bourne Identity series and mainstream porn.... (kind of an inside joke).

Hey glad you are well. By the way the small piece of blue stone in the envelope is called Lapis Lazuli, it was mined by Osama at one of his training camps. Its used for making all kinds of cool jewelery. I saw it and picked it up, I thought you might like it.

cheers,

ben
