A society where occupation determines gender

So I’m not sure where this bubbled up from, maybe it would be an alternate history or just a fantasy scifi (like maybe a colony ship mixes up its programming for setting up a society).

In any case: in this setting, gender roles are very patriarchal: women wear dresses and makeup, cook, sew, and bake. Men wear suits or working clothes, construct, hunt, and toil. There are some tasks that can be done by both (managing finances, reading, some research depending on field) though men tend to also take on governing more than women. Couples are always a man and a woman. Men also always initiate in the bedroom or flirting.

However: in this society, Your sex has zero bearing on your gender. Your occupation is what determines it. So it’s not uncommon at all for A man to come home from working in the forge and scissor his wife or for him to grab his wife’s cock and fuck her in the ass as she makes dinner. A man might even ask a friend to lend him his wife so he can get pregnant or even secretly fuck his friend to get pregnant.

So for the story I was thinking a fish out of water character gets dropped into the setting and has to navigate it.

I also thought it would be fun to have scenes where a curvy husband confesses he sometimes slips on his muscular wife’s dresses and let her top him. Or for same sex but different gender couples to be scandalized by a pair of bakers who are also same sex but also the same gender who were found having sex.

I know it’s a weird idea. But I just had to get it out. I just thought it would be fun to have a setting that is very regressive but in an atypical way.

So would this be a SciFi, dystopian universe where an earthling is magically blinked into its existence, where he/she has to struggle with accomodating their earthling sexuality with the 'alien' practices?

Sci-fi or portal fantasy, I was thinking. With Sci-fi, either they get teleported or their ship crashes, or maybe they’re an anthropologist

Portal fantasy: just like you said, they get zapped there out of the blue and need to figure out how to fit in or how to escape.

Alternatively it could be standard fantasy but it would be about a group who has a guide who tries to warn them but they all mess up their cover.
