<sigh> OK..... I have to write a research paper on a social issue that is controversial. Does anyone have any ideas? The only things I can come up with are:

abortion
Gun control
war

This is going to be a really thorough and in depth paper, so I want the subject to be a good one.. Anyone have any ideas?

Strom

Here are a few more I wouldn't touch..... lots of controversy

welfare reform
Spanking children as discipline (This one can start fights just as big as abortion, religion, or politics)

affirmative action
school voucher programs
tenure programs for teachers (WW III almost happened in one of my classes over this)

revamping Social Security

BTW, I have absolutely NO opinion on any of these subjects that I am going to share.

actualy don't want to say this on the board but it is actualy in that catagory (please noone condem me for this)
gay/lasbian relationships. in alote of places it still is contravertial.

I would write about that toilet paper that has the lotion in it. I want some o' that stuff. hehe.

The exploitation of women and sexuality in the media....

As we say on a recent thread here, foreign adoption seemed to strike up a heated discussion.

What are your interests

Do you want something that is historical?

What is the length of the paper?

Do you have to present both sides of the argument or are you articulating your stance on an issue?

Jot down a few and then do a first search to see how much credible sources are available? How much time do you have to research them?

You can't get anywhere fast until you narrow your focus of interest and ask the right questions?

Call it the researcher in me. If you'd like some reference tools to give you some ideas hit my pm.

Good luck.

Peace,

daughter

I agree with the foreign adoption being contraversal. I'm a victim of it. And being of a different race from what I was adopted into causes extra problems that what people realize. Nothing like being NA being adopted into the Aus culture made it extremely difficult growing up

you should narrow your topics a little more

if you want to focus on abortion... maybe you should narrow it to late-term abortions due to the threat to the mother's health and or baby's possible non-viability after birth?

Otherwise, stick with PC's suggestion. I wonder about the outcome of the profitability of Hanes if people begin to catch on to the "moist" toilet paper craze. Hell, if more men actually learn how to wipe their ass, there'll be no more need for them to buy more unstained underwear. That's controversy, man.

Daughter, the paper has to be at least 5 pages in length, 1-2 pages of works cited, and 5 page bibliography. I have never really written papers before. Not even in my Freshman English 1 Honors class. So this one has me stressing already, and today was the first day back at school!

No, I don't have to show both sides. He said he wants it to be an OBJECTIVE opinion paper. I'm not really sure I want something historical. I think I would rather something that pertains to us today.

And I will definitely be PM'ing you. :D

I'm inventing underwear with built in lotion.

Can you explain that a little better? A 5 page bibliography is huge. I mean my last 10 page paper only had a 1 and a half page bibliography.

A minimum 5 page paper is going to have to be very focused. I mean even sticking to just late term abortions would probably run over 5 pages.

Spanking might be good. Do spanking as a punishment in schools or maybe zero tollerance policy to weapons. Todd has talked about this some. Cases of butter knifes being thought of weapons and kids getting expeled or suspended.

A few suggestions

A few suggestion on my part. These were actually a couple of papers I contemplated over in college. Human Rights ( Slave trade still happens in some countries). Legalization of marijuana for medical needs. And a very controversial and touchy subject would be child exploitation in our country and abroad ( not only sexual but child workers etc.). Just a few suggestions for you to ponder. Good luck. Those papers can be a kick in the ass. Later.

The bibliography

is a different type of biblio. I don't have the paper in here with me right now, but I had never heard of it before. He said he would explain it all to us. <sigh> This class already has me stressing out so bad. lol

Hey Storm

Societal attitudes towards its more fragile members, i.e. those with physical, mental, and emotional challenges. What burden should a society impose on itself to mainstream these individuals? Should/can society legislate compassion?

Love ya, dear.

Topics?

1. Legalization of drugs

2. All this talk about airline security and the measures being taken wouldn't have stopped 9/11. It's all a facade...

How indepth can you get in 5 pages? I was a history major and always had trouble writing less than double the required minimum pages!

I did one on the Kyoto Accords. That's a pretty hot topic
Big business vs. environment
Campaign finance reform
Letting Mexican truckers in the US (they did)
cloning
Stem cell research

I'd skip:

Abortion
Gun control
death penalty

Nothing like doing something the grader has read about a bajillion times before to make life exciting.

Eros, You know just how to get to the heart of what's important to me, don't you? :) This is a good idea... I will have to give it a lot of thought.

I also like the spanking issue, the flag burning, exploitation of women and sexuality, and so many others. You guys are great!

The system for treating people with mental health issues that the Government has in place.

The affect of the images of women in the media today on female teenagers, pertaining to the disturbing tendancies towards eating disorders.

Teenage Sexuality and what should be taught in the Public Schools about safe sexual activity.

Spanking as a punishment, what is acceptable and what is abuse.

Late term abortions, what is legal and what is not.

Paternal rights in abortion cases, what rights do the fathers have.

Medicinal Pot.

These have fairly good sources on them, alot of proffesional journals, plus there are laws on the issues, and court rulings.

Good luck!

A few that have touched my life in one way or another

Adoption-private vs Agency
Homeschooling/Educational freedoms
Concealed carry laws
Welfare reforms
Drinking age
Cell phone usage while driving
Circumcision
Breastfeeding
Reintroduction of "offenders" into society (felons)
Fuel efficient (death trap) vehicles versus gas guzzlers (with more to protect the occupants)
Recycling
Speed limits
Oxycontin: benefits versus abuses
Birth control-should insurance companies provide for sexual behavior?
Child support enforcement methods and their success rates

How about

Genetic engineering
Stem cell research
Cloning
Paper vs. plastic
Thin Mints or Savannahs? ;)
