A small conundrum

Welcome to the Literotica Popularity and Pimping scoring contest.

Did the first part get on a tops list somewhere? How long has part one been up?

Always keep a parachute handy for falling scores. Or was that an umbrella, I keep forgetting.

A story in two parts. https://www.literotica.com/s/obsessive-compulsive-disorder and https://www.literotica.com/s/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ch-02

As of earlier today, Part 1 had a score of 4.23 and Part 2 had a score of 4.82. Of course, I realise that having now posted this, the 4.82 will get smashed into the weeds; but I’m interested in how come the rather marked spread in the scores.
Don't go all OCD on the scores, Sam. You're trying to apply logic and reason to Lit reader habits, and you know that's a mug's game.

Maybe though, the promise of spice is worth an extra 0.6 for the second part. Who knows?

Oh, lord. The same response always applies: There are too many variables in circumstance and readership at Literotica from moment to moment and entry to entry here to be able to expect much of a coherent pattern in reader response.

You can account for the difference by assuming that voters who thought Part 1 was average and gave it a 3 didn't bother with Part 2.

These will be old numbers as they're from the best in the last 12 months non erotic story list but:

Part 1: 106 votes with average 4.32 was made up of 42 people who voted a mean of 3.3 stars and 64 that voted a mean of 4.84 stars giving 4.23 overall.

Part 2: 64 votes with average 4.83.

Maths if you want to check
x

((4.23×106)−(4.83×64))/(106-64)=3.3
and
((4.23×106)-(3.3×(106-64))/64=4.84

How many views do they have? Which day-of-the-week did they publish? Are they in the same category? Where in the "New" list did they appear? How much sex and what type of sex appears in each?

There are various reasons for the difference in ratings.

I had one story post to the New list on Lit page THREE (it was another busy day for Laurel and Manu), which received a very low number of views relative to the others in the series.

My brain just exploded. :D

That makes sense to me. The readers of the second story are pre-selected to like it, or at least be familiar with aspects of it.

It sometimes goes the other way... people who like the first story and rate it highly then read subsequent stories in the series and are disappointed because you've introduced an element like incest a reader finds distasteful. You never know unless they comment on it.

1. Attrition. Those who didn't care for chapter 1 didn't read chapter 2. Only the fans were left. That's the main reason.

2. I thought chapter 2 was more fun than chapter 1. Even though you published both stories to the non erotic category, there's a clear erotic element and it's more pronounced in chapter 2.

3. Who knows? There's a big random element to how stories do at Literotica. The luck of the draw in what readers happen to read your story on a particular day.
