Computer Viruses

Tonight I will rant for a while about viruses. I got the e-mail that Wierd Harold posted the warning about, but so far I have not had any problems with the KAK worm on my computer (at least as far as I know. There could be something out there). I use Norton Antivirus, and it has so far been effective at protecting my hardware.

I have no comprehension of why someone would even write a program to do damage to other people's computers. There is no profit in it, simple perverse satisfaction at causing others distress is the only motivation these whackos can possibly have.

The whole hacker underground thing seems pretty childish and juvenile to me. I can understand the motivation of those who use their computer skill to steal telephone service, or defraud companies out of money (I understand but don't approve) but I can not understand the senseless acts of computer vandalism that many hackers have been known for. I support harsher penalties for computer and internet crimes, and especially for the spread of viruses.

The one thing that baffles me about hackers, is that they have a real talent, but choose to waste it on things like viruses.

Carl.

Sending Kids to College

My two oldest sons are going back to college on Friday, so yesterday the movers came for their stuff. Since they are going to be 1500 miles from home I won't see them until they come home for Christmas. Unlike Thumper's tramatic parting with his daughter last week, I have been through this before. Both of them are going back for thier sophmore year. This leaves only one of the boys still at home, and he is joining the military as soon as he graduates High School next spring.

So where does this leave me and my wife? For the last 20 years the focus of our lives has been on providing a home, safety, comfort for our sons. Just what in the hell are we supposed to do now?

It has been a very long time since we had to deal with each other as individuals. For 20 years we have been Mom and Dad. And we had less than a year together before the birth of our oldest son, so we are heading into uncharted territory here.

It shows, too. Our relationship has been strained for most of this past summer. It's almost as though we are having to get to know each other all over again. Hopefully we will be able to cope with being a couple again after all these years as a quintet.

Does that make it another rant?

I have never thought of people having tom come to terms with that before... I mean my dad is a truck driver and mum would see him for 36 hours a week and it works better that way. Is this a differnt form of empty nest syndrome... I dont know, but maybe if it is strained a holiday apart occasionally would help.

Random musings from da Chef

Skibum, love, I feel for you and your marital situation. Is there a way for the two of you to take a romantic trip together when your youngest flies the coop? I know you're not rolling in dough, but maybe a little weekend getaway to a bed and breakfast.

I'm not in your situation, and it's often very easy to give advice when you don't have to take it yourself, but maybe you should try to woo your wife. Start talking about how great it's going to be with the boys gone. You could make love in the living room if you want. You don't have to close the door anymore. Buy her some sexy lingerie, maybe. (Something SHE'LL like.) Pick some flowers and leave them on her pillow. Treat this like an opportunity to fall in love all over again. :)

to skibum, congrats on your gurudom!
here from my vantage point, as i look to the west, i see sugarbush and mad river glen. should i look to the south, killington and pico. vermont is the best place on earth to call home, isn't it?
we here may be a little less forgiving of humor concerning race, ethnicity or sexual orientation, but we enjoy a good joke more than most. usually at the expence of flatlanders!
as for the rest, i've said it before, i'll say it again;
DEAR GOD, ANYONE BUT GEORGE W. BUSH!

Can't think of any titles at the moment, but I know I've seen books about how to deal with the empty nest and become a couple again. I always start by reading up on a problem. You even have a head start- at least you're thinking about it before it actually happens to you! Go. Read. Get ideas.

Survivor

Since the final episode of survivor is due tomorrow I'd better make that the subject of tonight's rant. I actually like the show. It was a novel idea, and fairly well done. The four most ruthless of the castaways have all survived to reach the end game by virtue of their alliance.

The last two people voted off the island could have turned the tide if they had been willing to play the game. They could have gotten to Kelly and used her vote to break the alliance, but they never realized how late in the game it was.

The real monkey wrench in the plans of Richard and Susan will be the jury that chooses the final winner. If the jury has any say in it the winner will be Rudy or Kelly. They are the least devious of the remaining survivors, and I think Kelly has the inside track. Rudy is too old and opinionated to be very appealing to the jurors. Either one of them would get the nod over Richard or Susan.

The next Survivor series will be taped somewhere in the Austrialian Outback this winter. And there is a proposal to develop a Survivor show that would put candidates in the Russian cosmonaut school, with the survivor getting a trip to Mir, paid for by the TV network that buys the show.

The other reality based show that is on this summer is Big Brother. While Survivor is at least interesting, Big Brother is just stupid. Where did they find the losers they put in that house? All Brittany does is whine. And I was starting to like George until he dyed his hair green! The worst part of it is the half hour debriefing they do with the person kicked out every two weeks. And do they have to have it on EVERY night?

So there it is. Not as good a topic as the last few. i'll put some more thought into tomorrows.

My daughter watches Survivor religiously, and I have, against my will, been drawn into the weekly silliness. Only at the end, though. Watching an entire episode is entirely beyond me.

I do find it amusing that the final four are the kind who would eat their young. The ratings will go off the chart tomorrow night.

Finally, a controversial topic!

I have whimped out the past couple of days and posted pretty lame topics, so tonight I want to punch things up a little and give you my thoughts on abortion.

I know that most of the membership of Literotica is prettyliberal. That is to be expected on an erotic fiction site. It is also fairly plain to those who have bothered to read this thread that I am pretty conservative. I say that so no one will be too surprised by my statement. I do not approve of abortion as a form of birth control.

There. I said it. I am now tainted. Flame away.

I realize that there are passionate arguements on both sides of this issue, and I know that there is no chance for any change to the law that allows abortion in the United States. The "pro-choice" people have the votes in Congress and on the Supreme Court to keep abortion legal for a long time. The "pro-life" people are not going to be successful in their campaign to reverse the Supreme Court or pass law prohibiting abortions.

There are so many options available for birth control that it is almost inconcievable to me why abortion is needed for birth control in the first place. Killing a living human being that has done no wrong for reasons of convienience should be the last resort. One thing that troubles me is that people who are opposed to killing convicted criminals have no objections to abortion. I find that very ironic.

I do believe that there are circumstances that make an abortion a acceptable. Cases of rape or other forms of non-consent and for medical reasons are what I consider valid exceptions. Ill preparedness or stupidity is not.

In closing, I wish to reiterate what I have stated in this thread. My purpose is not to try and change your minds or sway public opinion, I merely wish to state my own opinion.

Fundamentally, I do agree with you. Abortion as a form of birth control is not a good idea.

Sometimes, though, birth control fails; I have a friend who introduced her kids as Pill, Diaphragm, Condom and Rhythm. Her last baby was nicknamed Tubal Ligation. That failed, too; the hysterectomy did not.

Sometimes, too, the emotional economics of the matter are just not good. A woman might know herself well enough to know that she could never give a child up for adoption, and that her abilities to provide for the child, emotionally and financially, are not good.

Should I insist she bear the child to term, knowing that she won't be able to let it go, but may well inflict harm on the child?

No woman wakes up in the morning deciding a child isn't convenient, and today would be a good day to end a pregnancy. The thought of it consumes many women for weeks; the procedure is not simple or painless.

In short, I believe the choice is the woman's, and should be left strictly to her and her doctor.
