I have some questions for people who read porno here at Lit.

1. Are you an author here?
2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?

In other words, do you have a vested interest in the voting from the perspective of the writer, not the reader?

3. Do you ever vote on stories?
4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?
5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?
6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?
7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?

Any other comments?

i try not to pay attention to the scores, i like to decide whats good on my own. Ive never written anything nor do i know any authors on lit. I'll vote for something if it really blew me away or really, really dissapointed me. but those are rare. most of the stories are good, those that i dont like usually involve things im not into.

KM

I dont punt much stock in votes. While I have only posted one story so far I value the feed back from ppls I respect a lot more.

When you see the DannyBoyUK thing you realise how easy it would be to bump a score/vote. I never use the top list to decide what i will read. I use the description line to decide if i will read.

Cheers

Mike

1. Are you an author here?

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?
Yes.

In other words, do you have a vested interest in the voting from the perspective of the writer, not the reader?
No.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?
Yes.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?
No.

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?
There are ways to abuse the system but it's as fair as an internet site can be.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?
No. I find I have different tastes than most.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?
To a point. I don't agree that the highest rated stories are the one's I'll enjoy the most. Or that they're even the best on the site. However, the higher the score the better the story tends to be.

"Any other comments?"
I love butter on warm muffins.

1. Contrary to popular belief: I am.
2. Um... Werd up to my intarnet homies!
3. With all the votes that have been thrown out, I learned that mine doesn't matter.
4. No, it's like reading Billboard to find out what music to buy.
5. Voting at Lit descriminates against Mestizos.
6. No, those are manipulated by the Nestle corporation
7. Somewhat. It's not all that clear cut. The fives are better than the ones. But is a 3.48 worse than a 3.52?

The election was stolen from me. Laurel and Manu are under the control of the Nestle corporation through influence in their Nesquick powder. The Anartican votes were never counted.

1. Are you an author here?

No I am not, could be if I tried.

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?

No.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?

Yes, everytime I read one that I have not voted on before.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?

Yes, I do.

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?

I have to believe that it is, I have never heard of there being any sort problem with that.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?

Not really. I do check out the new list quite a little bit.

7. Do you think a story's score is
a good guage for how good the story is?

Yes, I honestly do.
It has been my experience that anything voted 4 and above kicks ass in a major way.

1. Are you an author here?
yes

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?
yes

In other words, do you have a vested interest in the voting from the perspective of the writer, not the reader?
if you mean do I read my friend's works objectively...not really.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?
yes

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?
no

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?
I think there are a lot of people reading that don't vote. I often read without doing so.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?
No. I scan the new catagory and then move into the specialty areas that I read. I do look for the ones that got high marks editorially however.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?
Not always. I read one recently that had high marks but the story itself left me flat (no puns intended) I could not suspend my disbelief enough to get into the story line. (partially because I second guessed the plot)

Any other comments?

A really good story is one in which you can remove the sex and the characters and plot are still arresting enough to keep you reading. Thats what I have been striving for in my own work, to have a story that says something and tells a good story ...the sex is secondary...

1. yes
2. yes
3. yes, though probably not as often as I should.
4. no, I've never considered that.
5. probably not, as I don't vote on all I read, so if I don't, I'm sure that there are many readers that do the same.
6. only once.
7. I doubt it, but I may investigate to see for myself.

comments? Why are you asking?

Moon

1. Are you an author here?

Not yet.

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?

No.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?

Yes, unless it was so bad I didn't finish it.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?

I used to, but now I search for catchy titles and description lines. That has its faults, too.

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?

I think it's as fair as it can be, though i know you can vote on something more than once. I don't know if moderators can catch that or not.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?

No

7. Do you think a story's score is
a good guage for how good the story is?

I don't pay attention to the score anymore...so no.

Additional comments:

I have enjoyed a lot of KM's stories. If you haven't, you should read them.

1. Yes.
2. No.
3. Sometimes.
4. Not really.
5. I think it is moderately fair, but can be and is manipulated by some people. Too bad for them, but no big deal.
6. Occasionally
7. Not really. Erotica is such a subjective thing, I am not sure there is an objective "good". Unless the grammer, spelling, characterization, dialogue, etc., is downright bad, my votes aren't on writing "quality". They are based on how erotic I find the stories to be, how well they stimulate my own erotic fantasies. So I vote on effectiveness, not presentation. ;) If I find a story very erotic, I vote a "5" at the end as kind of a "attagirl" or "attaboy", if I find the story mediocre or poor, I rarely vote at all.

6 NO
7 It's only an indication of the taste of those that have gone before.

Other. I'd like to know the reason behind the questions.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?
--Every time. There are too many stories to choose from, and the top lists are a good filter.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?

Any other comments?
--No, that covers it!

so far only poems

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?
I have met a couple friends who write

In other words, do you have a vested interest in the voting from the perspective of the writer, not the reader?

3. Do you ever vote on stories?
Rarely....if I do it knocked my socks off and I feel I'm doing it as a courtesy to the author but I really don't think much about voting scores. Would rather read impressions or synopsis of the stories to see how they have been recieved and if I want to read them.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?no

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?????? Don't really care about the voting and have disabled it on my poems. I write for personal enjoyment and to share my thoughts and fantasies.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?
No. I used to go by category but now usually just go to the "new" lists and peruse, or I look up the stories of posters I read here on the BB.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?
????

Any other comments?

I was tickled when I happened to see one story I believe I enjoyed more than any other was one of the top nominees in the Lit awards. I guess I'm not the only one who enjoyed it. I can imagine the author would be tickled too.

1. Are you an author here?

No

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?

No, I have no vested interest in the voting; a couple people I know well have written things, but I don't pay much attention to how their stuff rates in relation to others.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?

Yes, if I read it, I'll vote on it.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?

Yes, I usually start with the top-rated ones and work my way down.

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?

I have no idea.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?

Yes, that's exactly what I do.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?

Not necessarily--there have been many occasions where a top-rated story seemed over-rated to me.

Any other comments?

I think a story starts off more highly-rated than it deserves, simply b/c the author and his/her friends/fans read and vote on it first. I'd suggest that the term "Top-rated" be reserved for stories that have been around for, say, 3 months and have been voted on by at least 100 people...or something like that.

Not really. I like to see people I know win, but it doesn't affect my voting. I have too much respect for writing to vote based on anything other than the work.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?

sometimes

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?

rarely

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?

I have no clue. I'd assume people probably rate stories by friends higher than they should, but that might even out depending on how many others read it.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?

Never even look at it. I honestly don't read the stories half as often as I used to, but when I do, I skim a lot till I find something that catches me.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?

I don' t know. I do know that many of the top rated stories I've read were crap in MY opinion. But I can see how they would apeal to others.

Any other comments?

I like Ham's idea for changing how stories are placed.

1. Are you an author here? No

3. Do you ever vote on stories? Rarely. I haven't read a story here in quite a while - I download stories from ASSTR, a lot easier to read while masturbating in bed. If I do find a story here or there I really like, then I sometimes send an email to the author telling them what I thought of it.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read? No

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair? I do not know or think about it.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read? No.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is? Possibly, but I look for certain content and theme, and I also go by other stories by the same author. What someone else likes and votes for may not be what I would like and vote for, so the score seems irrelevant.

2. No
3. Yes, all the time
4. No
5. Yes it's fair, but I would expand the voting scale to 1-10
6. No
7. Yeah I do.

1. Just posted my first 2 stories in the past week and a half, have been reading here off and on for 2 yrs.

2. No. Although since my stories posted I am getting to know a few. Great folks! But I always vote on the story, not the person.

3. Yes. Although it is hard sometimes to give an overall rating - with there was a way to vote seperately on content and on technical merits.

4. Occasionally. If something seems to have been rated highly I might check it out to see what the fuss is about.

5. That is a tough question. Personally the marks for both my stories so far have been high so I am tempted to selfishly say, "yes!" But of course the reality is that if someone has it in for you 'out there' they can try to afffect your score by down-voting and that would skew results. Sad that some people would indulge their pettiness and low self esteem issues this way but I am sure it happens.

6. Once or twice

7. For my own stories so far I say yes because I really believe I did a pretty good job. And generally reading other top rated stories I have found them to be good as well, occasionally outstanding. But some I can just say "Welll OK, it meant something to othr people but didn't grab me."

Someone in another thread - mighta been you, k-m - pointed out that there are 2 kinds of writers/readers here, ones who are mostly just in it for the fantasy aspect and another group that cares about good writing. Which is fine I guess but personally if a story is not well written, regardless of what the fantasy is, I can't waste my time with it. Similarly I have read stories that are about fantasies that would never occur to me to have, but the writing is good enough that I get sucked into it and even though it doesn't appeal to me sexually I can see the writer's skill in bringing it to the page.

Any other comments? I just read what looks interesting - I have actually never considered anything other than category/title when selecting something to read.

2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here?

I like to see my friends do well, but I don't considere that a vested interest.

3. Do you ever vote on stories?

Yes, I usually do.

4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read?

I have on occasion, particularly if I take a peek into a category I don't read regularly.

5. Do you think voting at Lit is fair?

I think it is as fair as can be expected, but there are some things you can't correct for. For example, when I've posted stories in InterRacial, I've received feedback telling me they vote 1 on all stories in the category. On the other hand I am a little embarrassed at the high ratings on The Run Of My Life, because as pleased as I am that it was received so well, I think at least part of it's high rating is a sympathy vote.

6. Do you ever use the top-lists to look for stories to read?

I did at first, now I usually look through the new stories listings.

7. Do you think a story's score is a good guage for how good the story is?

No, because what I think is good does not always align with popular taste. For example, I prefer realistic BDSM stories, but the more fantastic ones tend to get the higher ratings.

Any other comments?

As someone who writes here, and enjoys the work others post, I appreciate your taking the time to ask these questions, and the effort of others to give their views.

1. Are you an author here? Yes, under a pen name
2. Is someone really, really close to you an author here? Yes

In other words, do you have a vested interest in the voting from the perspective of the writer, not the reader?

3. Do you ever vote on stories? Almost always
4. Do you use vote scores to help you decide what to read? Nope

I have read contest winners and found them to be good stories, but in general I don't believe the scoring is fair.

Maybe fair or unfair is not quite the proper perspective. The problem is number of votes. The majority of stories have too few votes to be accurate. I found that when the votes for one of my stories were good suddenly a vote or two would kill it. With a small number of votes a few negatives can really affect it and I believe there are people that take it so seriously they will vote down the competition. Of course the same is true in a positive way as well. A few 5’s and your score will shoot up.

I don't want this to sound like sour grapes. I didn't write the stories originally for Lit and I never had any aspirations of scoring big.

I generally choose what I read by the author or just cruising the newly posted stories.
