I started out trying to write this as a story but decided to attempt it as a roleplay. Maybe I need to explain more, be more explicit, or maybe it is just too complicated. The roleplay thread I attempted is titled "The month of April".
In my story I envisioned four main character -- Brandon, Rick, April, and Wendy.
Brandon is the son of an obsessively ambitious international businessman. His father is always travelling, always in different countries around the world. After High School he joins his father for four years, travelling the world, learning different cultures, and studying different languages. But he has virtually no social life. And he is twenty-one when he starts University.
Rick is the son of an international exporter. His parents move to the UK after he graduates from High School. He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. He works minimum wage jobs, tried to date, but he has no money or direction and the women give him the cold shoulder. A rich aunt he is close to dies and he inherits her house, and he might inherit her money too -- but it's tied up in probate. So he moves into the house rents out a couple of rooms, and starts attending the local University as an architecture major.
April becomes a Catholic nun after being homeschooled by her parents. And lives in a convent for eight years before dropping out. She ends up renting a room from Rick. She is -- by far -- the most sexually frustrated of the group, and she has dangerous sexual fantasies. Brandon inadvertently introduces her to weird Japanese porn, and Wendy gives her old Hustler magazines.
Wendy is April's friend. She's only eighteen but she's three quarters Japanese, one quarter French. She's from Long Beach California, and she grew up in an almost entirely Asian (Cambodian) neighborhood, and school. She's majoring in business and minoring in French. She is very conscious of the fact that she is Asian and most of the guys at the University are white Caucasian. She feels almost inferior to the Caucasian girls and sort of believes that any white guy who finds her attractive must have some sort of fetish -- and yet she finds herself very attracted to Rick. She takes out her frustrations by feeding April's fantasies.

Have I created impossibly complex and complicated characters? And have I created an impossibly complicated storyline?
