This has probably been asked before, but here goes -

How many writers vote for their own stories?

Just so you know, I don't.

I don't vote for my own (although after the latest Lit fuck-up, I'm tempted to start). When I have had to make a public comment on a story (once I forgot to put Ch1 after the title on one and was getting comments asking if that was all), I do use 100% on the Thermometer. I figure I'm not going to troll my own story.

Hmmm... I've been tempted to give several of my stories a 2 from time to time.

As i used to tell Marine pilots during combat training....

there's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid mistakes because you didn't ask the question....

I voted on a few of my early stories here but the votes seemed to be removed.....

And after a while i got lazy and just don't do it anymore.....

I didn't it once. I had a story so close to 4.5 I couldn't resist. As I remember my score on that story dropped lower after my vote. I never did it again. :)

Why not vote for one's own stories? Who knows better their quality than their creator? :D

I guess I've answered the question, huh? ;)

But seriously, isn't it discriminating against yourself to not vote? Why shouldn't you allow yourself to vote? Aren't you a reader? Doesn't your opinion matter? So what if you're biased - everyone's biased! Candidates in elections get to vote, and probably don't vote for the other guy very often. (OK, not a good role model there in terms of individuals, but a pretty good one in terms of systems.)

Maybe it depends on whether or not you believe you should influence the vote/score. Frankly I never get that many votes - say 30 or so. A single vote from me could influence the score one way or another with that few.

My personal belief it that the "readers" other than myself are the true judges of my work. So far I've been satisfied with the results. (Although a perfect "5" would be nice but unattainable)

Once or twice when the votes were stuck at 9 and therefore the rating was invisible.

Never during a contest.

Og

I usually do vote for my own stories - usually before anyone else. The x.xx just makes it look so sad.

I don't see a big deal with it. I put such a large amount of work into every story and I'm usually very proud of them when they're done. (Reading them again five months later is another story.)

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel.

What Jenny says makes sense though, too. On the other thing with a little algebra you can subtract your vote and come up with a good estimation of what it would be without it. :D

(Actually, my reaction five months later is usually, "Damn, did I write that?" with a mostly positive cast. This countered by the fact that any errors and typos that had become "invisible" during the write/review process now jump right off the page.)

I vote of rmy own stories. I also comment on the story of anyone who takes the time to give me a comment on my story.

One of my stories (I forget which just now) had a 5 after 11 votes. The 12th one was a troll though, and it crahsed hard after that :(

And yes, I vote for my own stories to get them that elusive H that we all seem to covet so highly...

Never, not once.

It's for other people to decide on the story's worth, not me.

And I've only left a PC once. It was something that just had to be said.

If it was once? Then it must have been on my story? What needed to be said?

On the PC thing - I think it's good for authors to engage readers in PCs, and not necessarily just to correct negatives. I'm not sure how else the engagement could be, but it just seems nice somehow to make the thing a little bit interactive.

I'm assuming that I have the interpretation correct of how that works - if you haven't voted then your first PC "thermometer" counts as a vote, but if you have voted it does not count, and subsequent PCs do not count as a vote. If I got that right then it's a reason to vote the regular way - the convention on author PCs is to just leave the thermometer in the default neutral setting when posting them.

i have never voted on any of my own stuff - it always seemed rather pointless because the votes (to me) are a reflection of public opinion rather than my own. Besides, I figured any vote from me would be classed as illegal and therefore deleted at some point? Or maybe not, I don't know...

I feel quite dumb.....you can vote for you own stories?

......noppers, never have. Didn't even know the system would let you.

Hi, elfie.

Never, not once.
It just doesn't seem right.

I'm with S-Des. I don't vote on my own stories, but the one time I have commented on one (the X-Men story, trolls needing telling off), I gave 100%. At the time, I didn't know it counted as a vote. Laurel soon deleted it (the vote, I got rid of the comment when it was no longer necessary).

i was told that votes by yourself on your own story get removed, so i never bothered... i suppose i could go to a different computer, and not log in, to vote on my stories. but then, it would not feel right. of course, i could also do that a lot of times - there are lots of internet cafes around. hm... actually... that sounds like a good idea...

If I like my story than I am allowed to vote on it once. Mun, on the other hand, is being just a little bit unethical ;)
