A question regarding transgendered people and legal issues

Good evening to the GLBT folks on this board. This past weekend, I read several reports in the media regarding Thomas Beatie, the transgendered man who recently gave birth to a daughter. In many of them, the journalists were very careful to make it clear that Mr. Beatie is legally recognized as a man. And that got me wondering about the legal challenges transgendered people have to endure when making the transformation from one gender to another. Any information you can offer to help enlighten me would be greatly appreciated.
