A Question on story "hits"

A question if I may. Is the number of hits (or reads?) a story gets any measure of that stories popularity. Curious.

A general answer would be "yes." However, every time someone clicks on the first page of your story, that is considered a hit, or read. That does not say if the reader actually finished or liked your story. Many readers click on a new story, especially if it is close to the top of the New list. No telling if they enjoyed it or not.

A better assessment comes from the Public Comments and/or emails you may receive concerning your story.

Essentially, don't worry if your story is popular or not. The real reward is knowing that at least a few readers out there liked your story enough to leave a good vote and post a comment or send annonymous feedback.

It might be better to say that the views count is indicative of the Title's popularity or the effectiveness of your "blurb."

But...

As Slyc noted, there's no guarantee that a view is anything close to a "read" since it is only an idication that the server recieved that many requests to display that URL.

Thank you for the information (and that welcome). I sort of thought that, and thankfully I've received emails from several who were kind enough to comment and the comments so far have been favorable. Truth is I feel very fortunate to have this venue. It is an amazing place.

Hi, Mary Beth, and welcome to the AH. Generally speaking, the views depends on the category. Incest and Anal probably get more than any other. It also depends on how interesting the title and description sound to those who are perusing the "New Story" index.

Your original question has been answered, but here are a few hints you may find helpful.

1. Put a link to your story in your signature, so we can find it easily, then we'll go, read - and as fellow authors, probably vote and comment too.

How?
Log in and go to 'User CP' - the link is at the left, nearly at the top of forum pages
'Edit Signature' is the first item in the left column menu, under 'Settings & Options'
In another window, go to your story and copy the full URL from the address box in your browser, then go back to the CP window.
Type in a 'hook' line (the title, or whatever) and shade it with your mouse.
Click the world-with-a-chain-link icon on the second top line of the edit box and press [Ctrl]-V to paste in the URL, then click OK in that box
Scroll down below the 'Signature Picture' box and click the 'Preview Signature' button.
On that screen click the link you've just created (it should open a new tab/window depending on which browser you use) to check you've done it right.
Finally, click the 'Save Signature' button.

2. IGNORE THE TROLLS!
There are jerks who read Lit stories. Sooner or later one or more of them will give you a '1' vote, and maybe post some malicious comment (usually hiding behind 'Anonymous'), just to try and make you cry. You can delete those comments, but if you've got enough attitude, you can post your own reply instead.

3. Talking about attitude, your thread has been lucky enough to attract a post from Jenny Jackson. Jenny has 'attitude' enough to fill a stadium, but she's actually real nice! (Boo sucks to you Jenny - sorry to blow your cover, but while you don't suffer fools gladly, you are a beautiful person.)

In the AH, mostly you'll get a sympathetic reception - we're authors too, ranging from the wannabees like me to really accomplished writers, so we want consideration in return - and the vast majority appreciate that what goes around comes around.

4. The most common single question I've seen asked is "How long does a story take to get on the lists?" (especially regarding second submissions).

Lit usually meets their published targets, but when there is a popular competition going on, competitors get preference, especially when the deadline is approaching. Two to three times the normal delay can happen at such times. That's frustrating, but you just have to be patient - there's a reason.

5. For other newbie questions, look at the Newbie Support Forum which has lots of useful stuff, so you can pretend you knew all the time, instead of feeling you asked something dumb. :)

If I had to point to one advantage in moving here it would have to be the advise. Truly exciting to even be on the same page as some of you. Humbling and worthy of striving. The advise alone is worth the risk of posting. As to being afraid of someone with so great a fear as to mark themselves Anonymous before daring to write would be rare.

Trolls aren't so bad if you have a sense of humor. Some of them are down right hilarious! Once you get your first troll the rest will be easy. Never let them get you down and NEVER be afraid to use that delete button if they leave any unnecessary nasty comments. ;)

Don't be too impressed. there are excellent writers on Lit, but nobody here to my knowledge has writ the great American novel. ;)

Like most, a life layered in complications, but sometimes stripped to just a few layers for the sake of brevity and the pleasure of doing so. Places like this are wonderful because you can risk undoing another button. As for that background, feminization, coupled on occasion with regression, is the ultimate mask, if for no other reason than the extra layers. A wondrous ataractic without any side effects.
