I'd like to know if you were in this predicament, what would you do?

You fall ill with cancer. At first, your dealing with treatments at the hospital and you are still working and have insurance. As time goes on and for reasons out if your control you find yourself unemployed and with out insurance. The medication, treatments and doctors visit become something you cannot afford due to this.

What do you do?

Why is this question for "conservatives" and not all people? Who are "conservatives"?

I’m only slightly conservative, emphasis on the center in center-right.

I would personally be fine because as a tribal citizen I always have access to free healthcare. Granted, everything the tv republicans say about why free healthcare is bad applies to it. It’s slow, of extremely low quality, etc. I actually developed early stage colon cancer at age 20 due to luck of the draw with genetics. Took me months of doctor visits and seeing theee different doctors before I could get referred to surgery so I could have a colonoscopy to confirm the growth.

I’ve had insurance for years now and greatly prefer it but back to your proposed situation with the assumption that I don’t have access to free healthcare, except that I would. There are still options open to those who can’t afford insurance or out-of-pocket costs here in the states.

I am also fortunate in that I have no doubt that I would be the recipient of charitable donations from my communities. People often forget that charity and community assistance are tenets of the conservative philosophy. Now I’m not naive, I don’t believe that is a foolproof plan as obviously people can be selfish, vindictive, lazy or what have you. Doesn’t change the fact that the call to be a better person and provide aid to your fellow man is a good cause.

Auction off my heirloom plants to people who would appreciate them.

Maybe have a blow out vaycay.

Then grab a fine bottle of scotch, my favorite tunes and do some star gazing on a -27F night, it will be cold for a bit, but after a little while I'll stop being cold and warm right back up just before big long sleep.

Anyone to the right of Comrades Mao or Kim are alt-reaich nazis.

Why? because only those people think that people should be responsible for their own shit instead of making all of society pay. Also because leftist seem to think that their system of mass punishment and oppression making sure EVERYONE is dragged down to the lowest common denominator will somehow allow them to avoid death.

Must be my blonde hair as I thought you meant someone who is conservative in their sex lives. So thought that would be fun to ready. But since I am here I will answer as I am in health care and have worked in two countries that have universal health care. Quite different than here in the US. So first of all, they have "free" education for their medical students, nursing students and all health care workers so no one has any debt. Second, the clinics are all run by the government so again, no overhead for the doctors. So access to primary care is pretty good and drug prices are low. However, their formulary ( the drugs they have in the system) is much more limited than here. Something we would consider an everyday medication here is not available. Likewise, tertiary care is very limited as are testing with MRI and other advanced equipment except in very large cities. So you may wait months for the MRI of your knee with a torn ACL. Then another 4 to 6 months for surgical repair. So if you tore your ACL today, it would be next summer before you had surgery. UNLESS you wanna move to the front of the line with a cash payment or have private insurance above the state minimum coverage. Most US citizens living in those countries have private insurance to ensure timely treatment. So if you think the system is unfair here, which in many ways it is, it is vastly unequal in those countries. However, the people there seem content to wait. Would anyone here wanna wait 9 months for ACL surgery? Or to get a heart cath and stent? Or cataract surgery? Because that is the norm in many countries and there are complaints but not much you can do about it. those with the means will come to the US and pay cash for hip replacement and other procedures even from Canada where they also wait months for procedures done here every day. And the malpractice insurance is not necessary as most have arbitration boards set up to cover such events.

Now we could do a blend of things here to make it better. Cover costs of medical and other health care schools is a start. Give people an option to buy into medicare perhaps. But if anyone thinks having the government run health care is a great idea is kidding themselves. There would be no innovation in pharmaceuticals, no incentive to spend 12 to 14 years of your life on training only to be told you will work for the government. Sorry for the long rant but if we truly want to improve access to care talk to the people on the front lines.... the health care providers instead of the damn politicians who ALL have the gold standard of care not just when they are in office but for the rest of their lives. "DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO".

I love it, coati is so demented he thinks accepting reality with some shred of dignity is "macho bravado" LOL

If you want to be one dimensional and rather dishonest in describing military retirement benefits sure I'm "on the government dole".

But if you consider my income/capital gains taxes paid, I've just gotten a tax break as a benefit for my service, and if you want to call that "spend the rest of his life on the government dole" I'm totally ok with that :D stay salty my friend.

Shop Amazon this holiday season!!! Or COVID will get you!!! ;)

I don't worry about labels. On any issue I might have a liberal, libertarian, conservative, or no fucks given opinion.

I would accept cancer as a natural result of living in the polluted world of the industrial age. Fuck it, I had a good life. With insurance I might still decline cancer treatment as worse than dying.
