A proposed way to take care of "dead stories"...

Hello there!

I think we've all been in that situation: you find a story you like, write a good thread, submit it... and wait... and wait... and wait...

You try to contact the editor, but to no avail. So you wait some more... and wait... and wait...

You check the story summary, hoping that your thread might be approved if you can get X people to rate it X or higher... ACK! No!

So, all in all, you end up with a story blocked by a plethora of "approval pending" threads.

I'd like to make a suggestion to take care of that problem. I don't know if it is possible to code, so don't whack me on the head with a rubber duck.

If an editor does not log into Chyoo for a given period of time (3 months, 6 months, whatever...), his stories are defaulted back to "approve new threads when 3 members rate them 3 or higher". This solution avoids the conflicts that might result in appointing a new editor but allow the story to live on nonetheless.

Thanks,

Bunga

An excellent idea

An excellent idea, simple and easy to manage. No if someone would only list and implement it. I think 3 months is more than enough time. I have about 15 threads that are in stasis right now that I would like to see moving.

Perhaps a 3 months absence results in an auto-aprove of any threads waiting. Every 3 months they could be auto-aproved. Instead of having to gain ratings from others. As we know some people bomb stories and wreck ratings. It would cause another case of being stuck in limbo. Just my thoughts.

By the way... oh Mister Moderator, is there any updates that have occured which you can tell us about?

There are problems with that as it can be abused. The problem with the rating system is that someone could create alternate accounts to rate a thread enough so it gets approved.

This is one reason why I never allow auto-approval. There are authors that I really like and always approve anyway, but I want control over my stories. The only way I would ever allow any kind of auto-approval, even ratings-based, would be if I were leaving and never coming back.

However, I really don't see this being abused, as it's simply pointless. Does it really make sense for someone to want to add to someone else's story so badly that they'd go through all the trouble of creating new accounts and voting on their own thread? Especially when it's easier to simply write one's own story. The only "abuse" I see happening is if someone wanted to get revenge on an editor by doing something like deliberately slipping a child-porn or beastiality thread into their story, in which case it would probably be reported anyway by the time three people had read it.

Try Something

The key point is that something should be done to at least mark stories that have not been updated for 3 months so people don't waste their time adding to stories that are dead.

Although, I have added to a story less than a week old and had the editor never respond.

Fix This!!!!

This is a problem that needs to be dealt with. There must be an easy way to show the last time that the editor has logged in. I just don't get why people abandon stuff without leaving some kind of message. I am so sick of writing stuff that is never going to go anywhere.

Have I just been lucky?

The first time it happened, I considered it luck but now, it's the second time that a thread submitted to a "dead" story was accepted after about a 100 days wait. However, none of these threads had any comments attached to it and the editors never answered my e-mails.

Must we conclude that there is already such a mechanism in place?

Bunga,
I highly doubt it! It's probably just luck. I don't think the makers of Chyoo 2.0 would have added such a complex feature when they couldn't even add a link to the Chyoo forums. Right?

This seems to be a real bare-bones Chyoo. I am starting to get tired of the lack of everything. The whole excitement of having a new Chyoo has been lost and I think I am more disapointed with this version than the first one.

I know this Chyoo is suppose to be Beta... but how long does testing and fixing usually take? I just assumed they wouldn't release Chyoo 2.0 if it was so far from being finished. My understanding of Beta was a near complete copy of the real thing. Am I wrong?

i was only on the old chyoo for several days i cant compare.

but i don't think i like this chyoo version.
it doesn't link threads (the link thread option in the stories)
it has some real problems with ratings.

and for some reason, it's still in beta version!!!
how the hell can something stay in beta version for such a long period of time?

and about those dead stories, i agree with bunga. if the author is not responding to mail sent to him by chyoo or does not log into chyoo for 3 months, approve all the threads. If the author doesn't care enough about his story to check on it and let it grow, then other people should be given the chance to develop it.
Unless of course the story is one of those closed ones where the author is the sole contributor. those, i believe, should be respected.

if all the above suggestions are too hard to implement, then just appoint someine as moderator so that person/s could wipe out all the dead crap tha's just taking up space.
