Jake was brought up with a strong foundation of knowing that hard work could only lead to good things. The only way to get ahead in this world was hard work. It didn't matter where you applied your efforts, school work, small jobs, or actual employment, they all lead to great benefits for hard work. It was this attitude that lead Jake to starting his own after school business when he was still in middle school.
He would come home and immediately go into the neighborhood offering to do odd jobs for people, mowing the lawn, doing dishes, vacuuming, taking out trashes, etc. Little chores he could do for people that would net him a few bucks. He became known for it, and often times he would come home with over $50 in his pocket which was a lot for a kid.
As he grew up into high school he continued to work after school around the neighborhood. In his senior year, after turning 18, a new family moved in next door to Jake's house. Family was maybe the wrong word, it was actually an older gentleman maybe mid-forties, and his wife who was clearly in her twenties at best. The man clearly had a high paying but fairly demanding job because when Jake went over to offer his services, the young wife was only too eager to have him around to help her.
Jake learned that her husband was a business man, some CEO or some such, and that his job often sent him all over the world. Jake and her became friends of a sort over the weeks that followed. Jake would come by her house first after school, not only because she overpaid him, but because he liked hanging around her. She was stunningly beautiful, and Jake sadly was not exactly fighting back female attention.
His hard work got him good grades and made him money after school, but Jake never could crack the girl code. No matter what he did or how he tried he just couldn't get himself a date. And his good grade meant that he was often made fun of for being a geek or a nerd or whatever. It wasn't good for his image. His father told him not to worry because girls would be begging for his attentions in college when they learned that the smart guys would be the ones with all the money after graduation and that Jake would certainly get his pick of the litter.
They were comforting words, but they did nothing to quell his teenage horniness.
So sure he hung around the hottest women he knew would at least talk to him as often as he could. Sue him.
One day he was taking out her trash as she sat at the counter watching him. It seems she too liked having Jake around, if for company more than for the chores themselves. He pulled the trash bag out and she asked him about school.
Jake looked up and shrugged, "School's fine, kinda lame you know. Right now everyone is freaking out about getting a prom date because that's happening in like two weeks." He explained. "I've kinda given up trying to get a date, turns out good grades aren't exactly the keys to popularity. Maybe I should have joined the football team." He smiled, tying off the trash bag.
