A problem with ratings

I have become concerned with the ratings problem that SlidinginSilk brought up in another thread - namely, that someone out there is giving out ones to threads that merit much higher marks. I'm not talking about only my own stuff, I've looked at other threads that took a one, and they are objectively better than that!

I suspect that someone out there doesn't know how to rate properly, and is giving out ones when they mean to give out fives. Perhaps the rating bar at the bottom of the screen could show more clearly what is a good mark and what is a poor one? At the moment, is indicates "seeping" or "sleeping" which is cute but might be confusing.

Ratings are very important because some authors don't allow people to post who rate below a certain level. We really don't want lower ratings than we should have! This isn't just a matter of pride, it's a matter of being able to use the site properly.
