A place for mis-fits

I have received comments on my last couple of stories that the reader had given me a low vote because the story was in the wrong category. In my heart I agreed with the readers but I didn’t think the stories fit in any of the other categories here either.

I am sure that other have faced this problem, how did you solve it?

Is there a chance that the site could give us a grab-bag category for any stories we don’t think would fit any place else?

Unless I knew I better category to ask that it be moved to, I just grin and bear it and go on to the next story.

Also keep in mind that the site itself will sometimes move something if they feel it is misplaced so you could have your story in the right place. I agree don't sweat one dumb ass.

I've had Lit reclassify some of my stories and they did well anyway.

I actually wish that the tags were for categories, so that something could fit into multiple categories. For instance, the last story that I did some major work on would look something like this when submitted.

If it fits nowhere else

I was thinking along the lines of a category called ‘Miscellaneous Stories’. A place an author could send his story and know it would fit right in with the reader’s expectations.

Just think how random the random story selector could be.

I have some authors post a caveat at the beginning of the story saying why the story was posted in the category it was in.

I will also say you can't please all the people all of the time. Many of the pissy Any Mouse whiners just won't be satisfied no matter what you do.

Keep writing and enjoy. Don't worry about the nay sayers too much.

Thanks for posting this, mikey. I, too, have a question about categories. I was going to start a brand new thread about it, but I thought it would go nicely here. If you'd rather it not be here, let me know and I'd be happy to move it on out.

My question: I've written a little "romp in the hay" story about a couple of twenty-somethings that indulge in a little "if you'll show me yours, I'll show you mine." Basically, they're watching each other masturbate. So, should this be submitted under Exhibitionist & Voyeur or Toys and Masturbation?

And as for the reader giving you a low vote for it being in the wrong category: Even if it was in an inappropriate category, why should that elicit a low score? If the story's good, it's good, and deserves a rating that reflects that. Period.

If the reader thinks it's in the wrong category, he should let lit know that he thinks it should be changed. Sounds like that reader has himself confused with a site editor. Forget about it.

I'd probably put it in Erotic Coupling, because my impression is that readers of Exhibitionist & Voyeur expect a third party watching and those going to Toys and Masturbation are looking for an intersection of the two--masturbation with a toy. I would think you'd get some down voting and "wrong category" comments from readers not finding what they expected.

Erotic Couplings is the grab-bag category for stories with erotic content. Non-erotic is the grab-bag category for everything else.

If your story is long enough, Novels and Novelas is also a "grab-bag" category that doesn't break-down submissions by content.

I've put several of my stories in Erotic Couplings, for the very reason that they didn't seem to fit in any other category, and at least one of those didn't even fit that broad generalization. If you're more into the story than you are into the specific sex act, that might be the place to post, though it seems to me that's not a very popular category.

Erotic Couplings isn't "very popular" precisly because it is the catch-all, overflow category.

It is also, the largest category in terms of number of stories and that makes finding something good a real challenge because there's so much to sift through.

Literotica is open to creating new categories if enough interest can be demonstrated -- usually by listing stories in Erotic Couplings that have a common theme that would do better in a dedicated category. (It used to be that ten stories by different authors with a common theme was enough to demonstrate interest -- I have no idea what it would take now.)
