There's a picture in my head that wants to be a story - but I'm not having any luck expanding on the picture. The picture is this -

A woman, looking in the mirror. She's wearing a new bathing suit - sometimes it's a tank suit, sometimes a bikini. She's concentrating on her crotch - and how the suit covers her labia. She's contemplating cutting out the crotch lining so her labia will show more.

Where can I go with this? Why is she thinking about this? What can I do with this picture - it keeps coming back to me, but it won't get any bigger.

Some of the best stories start just like that, with an image in your head that you can't shake loose. It often helps to play journalist, and get down the 5Ws and H.

Who: Who is this woman? What race? What age?

What: What is she doing staring at her pussy in a mirror while in a bathing suit? What does her suit look like? Does she like it? Hate it? Why wear it at all? What problem(s) does she have? What does she want to happen? What does she fear might happen?

When: What time of day? What year? What era? Is she even on earth? Another parallel universe?

Where: Is she in her home? A lover’s home? A hotel? A resort? A cottage? Space station? What country? What city?

Why: Why isn’t she somewhere else, doing something else? Why is she here right now doing this? What is the fascination with this piece of her anatomy? Why is she dressed like this?

How: How did she get here? How does she resolve her dilemma?


After that preliminary work, start questioning and expounding on all of your answers. Eventually you will have an understanding of the scenario, the character and the motivation. It is all filling in the blanks after that.

This is a most excellent thing. I especially appreciate the fact that this picture *wants* to be a story. When I start writing I get so involved in my characters I lose track of everything else - I just want my characters to be OK in the end.

Sit down. Write a description of her. Do like Tate said and answer the 5W's for yourself. The story will come to you, just don't let yourself become frustrated. Well, not too frustrated, anyways.

I like the angle of her being shy ( or limited experience), and just discovering the power of her sexuality. You would need to say " why"- is it the attention of a new person ( could be either gender), exercise, hormonal shifts, discovering erotica? Looking at this from a symbolic point of view, this seems to be an image of sexual awakening. I've often noticed how the relatively thick material at the crotch of a swimming suit can make a woman look almost asexual, like a mannequin or a barbie doll. But with the lining removed her sex blossoms, is allowed to open up and be seen as opening.

That she is evidently alone considering this, makes it seem like a moment of personal realization rather than wanting to experience exhibitionism.

There have been a number of suggestions about how to go with the story, the only thing I would add is that maybe this scene is the end of the story, rather than the beginning. Or maybe a seque between an old life and a new life.

I do like the idea of her being on vacation, away from home and people she knows, maybe even a cruise. Maybe she's getting away after a particularly trying relationship or break up and just wants to see what it's like to be someone else for a while.
