A Peregrine Falcon??

LOL, that happened to us on Thanksgiving Day a couple years ago. He hit the window. But it was a Red Tailed Hawk. He was a little dazed, hopped under my car then got out and flew away after a few minutes.

Earlier today there was a loud BOOM on our back door. Something hit the glass.

We thought it might be kids and took a look outside. There was a small circular pattern of teeny feathers on the glass. Banded colors, downy, and when we touched them they blew away.

Then we looked over on the fence and saw this bird -

He sat for awhile, calmly, proudly. I had to find a picture online because he flew away when we tried to photograph him. Initially we thought it might be a hawk but with the pattern on his breast we think it's a peregrine. In Kansas???

The pickings are pretty good in our backyard if he decides to hang around. We feed birds, and have doves, pigeons, cardinals, bluejays, and any manner of tiny songbirds nibbling at our feeders.

He probably chased something into our back door - he hit hard. Then he sat for awhile and recovered. Pretty amazing.

And a very cool looking bird.

That's a falcon all right. And since he might have been doing over 100 MPH when he hit the glass very tough too.

We have a sharp-shinned hawk that preys on the visitors to our bird feeders. It targets the mourning doves, mostly, but I've seen it pick off a squirrel.

Most often, it's the birds it panics that fly into our windows. The hawk's too smart.

That is a Perigrine Falcon in Arctic plumage. It was removed from the endangered species list in 1994, BTW.

They migrate widely. It was no doubt pursuing prey or just didn't see the glass.

A lot of raptors don't make it past their 1st or 2nd year of life due to accidents such as you saw.

I'm glad it was ok. They are magnificent birds. :D

I'm an avid bird/animal lover, and Falcons are some of my favorite birds. I watched a documentary on them once. They're like little jet fighters.

They are now re-introducing them to NYC to keep the population of pigeons down.

Falcons and Hawks and Eagles

It's amazing when you see these birds. See a lot of Red Tailed Hawks flying next to cars or sitting on signs.

The area I live in now has Bald Eagles nesting and repopulating the area. Nothing like seeing one of them soaring down at prey or just sailing on thermals. Amazing!

I hope he stays around. I wonder about the hunting range of a falcon?

We have some fairly tall trees along the back fence. I suppose they aren't tall enough for a falcon to roost but they'd make decent hunting posts.

And yesterday 5 big fat squirrels were gobbling sunflower seed (they ran when a kitty hit the glass from the inside - lol).

At any rate, pickings would be pretty good around here.

;)

Unfortunately, your kitties would be on the pickings list too. But, yes, that would be a cool bird too watch from time to time.

They are indoor cats. They just drool over the birds at the window.

There are some neighborhood strays who come by for an occasional snack but that's usually at night.

Hopefully there are enough other critters to feed the falcon.

A bird with a taste for pussy would be a bit bass ackward, now wouldn't it?

Perigrine's prey almost exclusively on other birds, so your cats (and the squirrels) are safe.

Something (or someone) else would have to eat the pussies.

Eatin' squirrel don't have the same ring to it. ;)

Beaver?

An absolutely beautiful bird. You have been blessed to see one.

Here I have a Red Tailed Hawk that has been hanging around. (I'm going to try and entice it to stay with vermin.) and the occasional buzzard.

Yes we have buzzards in South Florida.

Cat

Having birds fly at your window is bad omen in Eastern Europe. Just as well you yanqui.
