Hello all,
I just submitted my first short story, and was wondering about what I should expect. I already got a favorite, which is definitely more than I expected, but no stars or comments.

#1 When should I expect the larger turnout, or how long does it take to see your story get good response, if ever?

#2 I know I will get better at grammar and editing in time, but I must have proof read 30 X and I still see crazy, stupid grammar mistakes in the story after I published. |( How difficult was it for you?

#3 Is there any place, either in the forums or chat, to advertise my piece? I'm half excited, and half worried about the turn out.

It takes a good half day for the views and votes to register in the public listing, although you should see them as they are provided in your submissions page.

You can advertise single Lit. stories in a sticky thread you'll find at the top of the Story Feedback forum.

#! The more stories you post the larger the turn out. It also depends on the category.

#2 Two things that i find that help with self editing. Change the font or the background when reading. Also try reading the whole thing aloud. If you stumble when you do then look at that part closer.

#3 There is a story advertisement at the top of the AH and another at the top of the feedback forum. Also put it in your sig line. That is about it.

Welcome to the madhouse. :D

The sticky at the top of the AH is for published books by Lit. authors, not for Lit. stories.

With up to 700 stories being posted each week it is more difficult than ever for a new author to get noticed.

As well as the advice of TX (avoiding top of the AH), try a bit of self publicity. A thread on the AH or stories feedback asking for comments on your effort - must give link - can generate a bit of awareness and you can keep the thread alive by replying to comments.

Edited to add: The seasonal contests get a fair bit of attention, so why not try a submission to the Valentine's contest in a couple of weeks to raise your profile.

I would self publish, but I am a bit on my own. My friends and family are quite conservative sexually, and I'm not sure I want them to know about this side of me. Any ideas of self publishing besides the usual social media?
