I was begining to think I was a pathetic loser for not having a date on new years, when I heard about a radio station hosting a party for singles, no dates allowed party. It sounded like fun, so I made my reservation and debated what to wear.

Open to all, but no dates allowed, come as you are, type of thing.

Frank

I heard the pitch on the radio, in between nostalgic songs bringing back a lot of memories from my past. My wife had run off with a guy she met at work, leaving me all alone just before Christmas.. I rattled around the place with nobody to keep me company. A short separatio was one thing, but thjios time I had no idea whether she would return, if ever.

I had no plans except to watch some football, so I called the phone number given and arranged to attend. Who knows - I might meet someone interesting

Joe

This was the place. I glanced at the hand written note my sister had given me and made sure of it, then crumpled it inside my pants pocket. Christ, What was I doing here?

I was past 30 and single again, walking away from my last pathetic relationship after finding my S/O in the bed of another. True I had nothing better to do but sit at home and sulk, feeling sorry for myself but sis swore she wouldn't leave me alone until I tried something!

I pulled the collar straight on my white shirt and brushed my hand thru my dark brown hair, looking at the reflection in the bathrooms mirror for the umpteenth nervous time, green eyes looking back at me without pity.

Maybe there was a bar? I could drink myself senseless and at least not know I made an ass of myself before it was over?

Walking out to the larger room I spotted a bar and a dance floor and went for the obvious decision, a few drinks maybe and I would find enough courage to ask the young lady at the end of the bar for a dance.

Micki

Micki walked into the place, dimly light, slightly smokey air. A nice long bar adorned a mirrored wall to her immediate right and a decent stretch of dance floor was on her left. Along the back wall was the usual arrray of food. The music drifting along. There were a few people there and she stepped up to the bar and ordered a drink. Something to relax her and dim her senses.

Sam

Sam pushed the door open into the dimly lit bar. It was by chance that he was here choosing it as a place to have a quick one before heading for his appartment. A sign above the bar announcing an all night singles party caught his attention. Singles only it said. That certianly described him as he was indeed single and liked being that way. No strings attached, no one to answer to but himself.

"CC and water" he told the bartender and looked around to see what kind a crowd hung around at a place like this.

- Pesha was the next to enter. She came in slowly and almost shyly as she tugged at her skirt, wondering if it was too short.

Ash blond hair reflected the lights of the room as her emerald green eyes scanned over the singles that had gathered.

She however, did not have an invitation, however, she felt she blended in well enough to not be bothered.

With a soft smile she sat down at the bar, ordering nothing more than a glass of water -

I dressed more carefully than usual, and arrived at thge appointed hour. Not many were there yet, but as i walked in I saw a lady alone at the bar, and took the seat next to her

I placed my order as the bartender delivered er drink, and turned toward her and introduced myself. She told me she was Micki, and we both now at least knew someone there. When my drink came, I paid for mine and hers, and invited her to dance

Leah

I can't believe I am actually going to this thing!

My sister dropped off the invitation this afternoon. She thinks I need to get out more. I guess she is right. I am 35 and have been widowed for 2 years. My job and the children I teach take up much of my time.

The heels I am wearing are a little unfamiliar. But what else would I wear with this short slinky black dress? I even had my hair done, swept up, with some loose curls falling here and there. I hope I look more confident than I feel.

The place is just up ahead and I go in. I see the bar as my eyes adjust to the darkness. At least there are still some seats at the bar. I sit. After I get the bartenders attention and order an Amaretto on the rocks, I take a look around me......

Sam

Finding an empty stool next to a petite blonde, Sam sat down. He looked in the mirror first at his reflection, pushing his hand through his dark brown hair. Lately he’d been noticing a bit of gray appearing at his temples, but at least he had a full head of hair not like some of his friends who in their mid forties were going bald already. He’d kept in good shape too, five eleven his slender frame at 165 lbs. he prided himself in the fact that he jogged every day. Now his brown eyes sparkled as he glanced quickly at the reflection of the girl sitting next to him. Her emerald green eyes caught his attention first as they seemed to give her an air of mystery. He noticed that she was drinking water and he sensed a wholesomeness about her as she smiled a soft gentle smile. Sam smiled back seeing that she had noticed his gaze, then he turned to her. It had been a while since he had encouraged conversation with a member of the opposite sex in a bar setting and he flushed a little as he found himself introducing himself to her.

“Hello, he said simply. My name is Sam, are you here for the party? Actually I just happened to drop in on the spur of the moment, but it looks like it might be fun.”

He noticed she seemed a little nervous and feeling like he maybe was the cause of it looked away for a moment to give her some space, taking a sip of his drink.

Something pulled his attention back to her again and he turned back towards her. She smiled that same soft smile and Sam felt relieved knowing he wasn’t the cause of her discomfort and he smiled back waiting for her answer.

"Sam? Thats a nice name, I'm Pesha"

- She extended her hand to him as she glanced away for a moment to address the rest of the crowd -

"I was not invited, but I decided this year I didn't want to be alone for New Year's eve"

- Her voice was low and she knew the surronding sounds would soon get louder as the party progressed -

Sam

Sam was relieved to know that he wasn't the only one crashing the party, and happy to feel that this girl was comfortable with him.

"Persha, I like that name, sort of mysterious...."he looked into her emerald eyes and saw something that pulled him to her like a magnet.

He touched the back of her hand "Don't worry, if they throw you out I will go with you I don't want to be alone on New Years eve either.

- A soft blush painted her pale cheeks as the slender digits of her free hand tucked a loose piece of soft ash blond hair behind her ear.. -

"I don't think they will even notice, there are so many people here already and they haven't even been asking for id either.. "

- She thought now would be a good time to get to know him a bit better -

"What about you? Are you from around here Sam?"

Sam

He watched her tuck her hair behind a pale white delicate ear and his heart lept to his throat. Her softhair caught the light as she moved it and Sam found himself lost for words somethinghe hadn't experienced in a long time.... After a few moments of akward silence he found his voice and responded to her question.

What about you Sam . Are you from around here?

"I live about three blocks from here.. Persha... "

He liked the way her name fell from his lips like he had been knowing it and saying it all his life.

"By myself, though I have a cat to keep me company as I live alone. Rather I should say that the cat has me to keep it company as she has a mind of her own and seems to come and go as she pleases, showing up on my door step when she wants to be fed or petted."

He was wondering why he was rambling on about his cat and began to realize that this girl was easy to talk to. he didn't seem to need to play games with her ... brag about his job or the places he had been or the people he knew. He could just be himself something he hadn't done for a long time either.

"You have a cat?"

- Her green eyes lit up -

"I love cats, they are wonderful creatures. Independent with minds of their own"

- Her smile never faded for that moment as she looked him. She noticed a lock of his hair fall into his eyes as she leaned forward, drawing her soft hand to tuck it out of his eyes and behind his ear.

She stopped for a moment and blushed, veering back as she turned her head down -

"I'm sorry, your hair was in your eyes.. "

Sam

Her touch was as soft as silk as she swept the hair from his eyes. A sort of electric shock flowed through his body and settled somewhere in the middle causing a glowing feeling. He couldn't help but reach out to take her delicate chin in his long slender fingers and pull her head up to meet his gaze again.

"Its alright he said softly."

Even though the loudness of the music and the drone of the conversations around them blocked out his words he sensed some how that she had heard him or maybe felt his words as her smile returned a sense of understanding.

- Pesha's smile was warm and understanding as she nodded and placed her hand folded softly in her lap -

"I would like to see your place sometime Sam"

What the hell was I thinking?

I'd only been in town for a few weeks, so I knew *no one* but the folks at my new job, and my landlord. My landlord was a 77 year single child bachelor, and everybody at work was either 1) happily married, 2) too old, 3) too young, 4) gay, or 5) entirely uninterested.

So, the day I'd heard the pitch for this "singles only" get together, y'all come, I thought, 'What the fuck have I got to lose? Nobody knows me, so maybe it'll be a point in my favor.'

I made all the proper preparations, then on the appointed night, at the appointed hour, I got myself ready. Supposedly it was a "come as you are" type affair, so theoretically, blue jeans and a T-shirt would have been acceptable. Nevertheless, if I was expecting to meet someone other than a biker chick, however interesting that may be, I figured I should dress up a little, even if it was *very* little.

I went out and bought a new pair of black jeans, and found a nice button-up shirt to go with it, polished up my boots that made me about another two inches taller (like I really need it), then made sure my past-the-shoulders prematurely graying hair was clean and trimmed my beard. Once I got myself all done up, I looked in the mirror, and while my opinion of myself isn't necessarily over-inflated, I thought I looked pretty good. Hopefully, even if it didn't lead to anything, I could meet one or two good folks at this thing.

Anyway, my statement at the top was the first thing that first came to mind as I stood outside the door of where the party was being held.

I'm not a social butterfly. Suddenly I had visions of myself walking in this place and sitting in a corner by myself all night watching everything going on without me. It takes a lot of doing to get me to make the first move, but if I got in there and found out it wasn't for me, I'd go home and make friends some other way.

Taking a deep breath, I reached for the door handle and walked inside.

There were already quite a few people there. A few had already found somebody to talk to.

Most of the people had gathered at the bar. A safe haven in a strange land, I guess. Not knowing what else to do, I stepped up with them, and made my order when the bartender came my direction.

Sam

"I would like to see your place sometime , Sam"

He leaned towards her making sure he was hearing her right. Some might think she was trying to pick him up he thought but to him her voice was honest and unpretentious. He grinned.

"The place is a mess, you'll have to give me at least a week to clean it up."

He saw disappointment in her eyes and quickly added. "Well maybe not that bad it's just that I've kinda got the habit of leaving things lay around, like books and art materials. I know where to look for things and Cleo doesn't mind as long as I don't cover up her litterbox."

He caught himself chuckling and then continued in in this mirthfull mood. "Besides I haven't a TV and theres not much to get excited abut in the frig so we'd have to be content to join Cleopatra as she watches the goldfish in the aquarium."

More serious now as he seemed have her undivided attention despite the air of celebration going on around them and feeling like he was being drawn into her emerald eyes he softly said. I do have a gas fireplace that can be a comfort on winter night.... like this.

- It wasn't till his last words that she perked up, for a moment there she thought he really didn't like the idea, and that she completely failed in making a new friend.

She nodded softly as she looked at him, she was even interested in watching the goldfish bowl.. as long as it was with him -

"Maybe after this is all done Sam?"

'or now... ' She thought...

Micki

The usual sort were showing up, I glanced around as someone sat next to me. Not a bad sort, after all it was just a dance right? I felt like I had been latched onto as we danced. I kept putting space between us. I merely hoped the rest of the night turned out better.

Frank

We started to dance, and i tried to talk to her, but she made it apparent she wasnt interested. I guess the chemistry just wasnt there, so right in the middle of the song I led her back to her barstool, thanked her for the dance, and picked up my drink and left. There had been a real cute little blonde sitting on the other side of me, but she was talking to another guy and I didnt want to intrude.

There was another girl sitting down the bar sipping an amoretta, and I made my way down toward her

Aaron

Once I had my drink, I looked around the room a little more.

I saw one couple leave the dance floor partway through a dance. She didn't seem very impressed, and he seemed disappointed. I watched as he thanked her for the dance, then picked up his drink, looked around a little bit, then headed for a good looking gal in a tight black dress with a little overdone - but nice-looking - hair.

Either one of those women would be good to meet, even if it was for just a little while. Problem was, there were more guys here than girls. If I didn't make a move soon...

Leah

How interesting it is just to sit and watch people.

I see a cute blonde getting along very well with the dark haired gentleman sitting next to her. I hope they have a good time.

That is what New Years is all about - New beginings, and saying goodbye to the past.

A very distinguished grey haired man is watching a couple on the dance floor. It seems the dance is not going very well, as he leads her off the floor. She is beautiful, and I suppose the one watching is glad she has been deposited back at the bar.

Oh my, her short lived dance partner is headed this way. A hundred different emotions and thoughts run through my head!
How very handsome he is. Is he actually going to talk to me? Can I do this? It has been such a long time. I feel a flush working it's way to my face.

Ok, get a grip. I am here to meet people. I can do this. If I think confident, maybe I will look more self assured. I tuck a loose dark curl behind my ear and take a deep breath. I turn torward the stranger and say, "Hello."

Frank

"H i, I'm Frank", I said after surprisingly, she said hello to me. She was sipping er amoretto, which seemed inviting. A nice drink and I hadnt tasted one in a long time.

She told me her name was Leah, a prety name for a pretty girl with a pretty little glass of a cordial. I asked if I might sit next to her and she just patted the empty seat at the bar. By then the song had ended, and they were just starting another.

I told her the last dance didnt work out very well, and I hoped she would try one with me. I hadnt realized she had been watching, but she grinned and said she had noticed, as she stood and we went to the floor.

She was nice and tall, a good fit for my 6'4" frame, and it was a delight to take her in my arms and dance with her

Sam

After a bit of silence Sam realized it was his turn to speak. "Sorry, he said, Its just the noise in here..... Yes maybe after all this is done he answered hesitantly,"

He wanted to spend some time with this girl but he didn't want to be too pushy either. He felt that he needed to get to know her a little better before he shared the intimacy of his appartment with her.

"Let's dance he said quite suddenly as if to break the awkwarness of the situation."

As they approached the dance floor the music changed as if just for them . The band began to play a slow song something that would help them get to know each other by the physical touch of each other. Something more than mere words......
