Publix Supermarkets opened a new store down the road from where I live. This is one of what they call a "Green Market" and carries a lot of Organic Foods.

Well I'm not a big one for organic foods but I had heard their meat selection waas well worth the visit. They were correct, the meat counter alone was one of the largest I have ever seen. The selection was great. Everything from pre-cut and pre marinated meats to specialty cuts. (You want a four inch thick Porterhouse? They cut it for you, hell they'll even marinate it for yoou if that's what you want.)

My wife and I checked out the meat selections and wandered away to look over the rest o the store before making our selection for tonight.

Their cheese selection was great. Their deli seemed well stocked although a bit pricey. They even had a grill and mini-restaraunt on the premises making such things as Smoked Brisket Sandwiches and Chicken Wings. (We taste tested and they were more than passable.) Finally we returned to the Meat Counter and made our selection. Argentinian Chimichurri Skirt Steak.

Man talk about outstanding. I tossed this on the grill and cooked it over medium heat until it was medium rare. Let it sit for a few minutes then served. Who needs a knife? This stuff was so tender I was cutting it with my fork.

I enjoyed it so much I went online and downloaded not one but two recipes for the marinade.

As for the store. well my wife and I will be visiting it a bit more. It's convenient, (within walking distance) and their meat and cheese selections are impressive. (Too bad they don't have Hand Cheese.)

Hey, Cat, I'm glad for you. Publix is my favorite store.

We're supposed to ge getting a Whole Foods in J'ville!

We're gettin' one in Vero Beach pronto.

At the last minute they changed locations for the regular market and the 'green' one, but it's openin' soon.

I am definitely checkin' out that meat counter. :D

Their meat selection here is great, although as I mentioned a bit pricey. (The Skirt Steak I bought was $11.99 a pound.)

That being said though you can easily find the marinade recipe and buy a Skirt Steak cheap from a regular Publix. Trim it and marinate it yourself. (I do this a lot, try something I buy then learn how to make it.)

I did this a while back with Kabobs. I bought a cheap chunk of roasting meat that looked nice and lean. Got it home and cubed it. The meat I then rubbed with Cholula Chili Roast Garlic Powder and let sit in the fridge overnight.

The next day I skewered the meat cubes and slow grilled them until almost done. As they grilled I chunked a sweet onion and a couple of Bell Peppers. Then came the work.

I skewered a chunk of meat, a chunk of onion, a piece of pepper and a Grape Tomatoe. I continued this until the skewer was filled. I filled all available skewers with this mix then tossed them on the grill, again over low heat. Turning them every ten minutes or so I grilled them until the onion was just turning and the pepper had a slight char on it's edges.

It was worth the effort.

I love Publix. They carry Kalik beer. Don't get there often, living in NC and all, but make it a point to stop in when I can.

We have a few here in SC, but the closest one to me is about thirty minutes away. It's right next to the fresh market. I usually try to hit both when I'm in the area.

We have these grocery stores in my area:
  1. Publix
  2. Winn-Dixie
  3. Super Wal-Mart
  4. Super Target
  5. We used to have an Albertsons, but it closed
  6. A Rowe's replaced the Albertsons, and then it closed
  7. We used to have a Food Lion in my neighborhood, but it went away too
  8. Save-a-Lot, where I've never been
  9. Harris Teeter, which is too far away. Anyway, my husband went there and said it was no better than an upscale Publix. I was in the one in St. Simons Island. It was nice, but I thought my husband was right.
Of all these (that are left) I go to Publix most often. The Albertsons was a good store when I used to go to it. They had fabulous meat sales, and a muscular, well-developed cosmetics department. And then they had to screw with it. First, they renovated it. The renovation took forever; whenever you went in there you had to walk on sticky underlayment and you couldn't find anything. Then they finished the renovation, but they went with this damfool layout that was like the store had been arranged by aliens from another planet who didn't know the use of common household objects. You had the small appliances across from the spices, stuff like that. An employee explained that this was so you'd walk the whole store and buy stuff you hadn't planned to buy, instead of going in and getting what you were looking for. It didn't work that way. I think it pissed people off. Moreover, I think the building suffered some kind of water damage because it smelled. And what's more, the renovation and all ate up all the sales.

Winn-Dixie has never had good deals on produce. Food Lion gives the impression of being a dreary place; I seldom went there. Wal-Mart is very good for some things. It has some very good produce deals and caters a lot to the Hispanic market.
