At the moment I am watching, with interest, a new series called, "Cold Diggers", about two Canadian Oil/gas drilling crews one in the Arctic Circle, as they drill deep into the earth.

This is just one of the dozens and dozens of shows I find myself attracted to, and, in the midst of this one, I am wondering just why I have such interests?

I have watched and enjoys shows ranging from crab fishing to tuna to swordfish, ocean trawlers, hand lines, nets, you name it. Also a series of offshore deep and shallow water drilling, salvage crews on land and sea.

Gold mining shows, copper and uranium mines, diamond mines in Canada and South Africa; ship building in Hong Kong, container ships and their Ports in Singapore and Rotterdam, tunnel digging shows, like the 'Chunnel' and another under the Alps.

Deep ocean biology shows, 'black smokers' mid atlantic ridge, everything on earthquakes and volcanoes I can find and of course a subsription to NASA, I still get updates on the Huygens probe and the Martian Rovers that long outlived their predicted time, and of course every space mission and astronomical event and observation including the solar weather report, available 24/7 for those who are interested in solar flares and solar max's & minimums and why...

There are many many more that don't come to mind at the moment, but that's enough to touch upon..and mainly to see if any others are as addicted to that type of programming as I seem to be....and...why?

I am often fascinated, entranced and astounded by the sheer size and cost of much of the equipment in use and the inherent dangers in many of the explorations.

Cuz maybe youre smart?

I'm reading a book about Harvard. Those cats spend all their time worrying about membership in the right clubs and dorms.

..or maybe because I don't have a life...heh, that would probably be the next comment, if there is one, and I thought to beat them to the punch.

Actually, I do have a life, of sorts, with the birth dates and preferences of eight children and over 20 grandchildren to try to keep up with...and a dozen unfinished stories plus some still rattling around in me noggin begging to be given life...but ah, well...hello, James, and thank you...be well!

differences are cool and unique and neat-o and stuff

A lot of those jobs aren't things you learn about in school. I think when you watch those shows you are (maybe) fascinated with how diverse the world is. How very different people's lives are and you wonder how they got involved in such things. I know I do. And how do people think to do some things like drilling and living in outerspace and working underwater or under the earth?

I love watching Zahi Hawass' show about archeology. It's really good.

Back in the old days before the Internet and before search engines, one was left with current magazines on science subjects and of course the brick and mortar library....one could consume hours looking for information that is now at our fingertips and nigh instantaneous.

The search engine 'Bing' claims to sift through pertinent information as it applies to each specific request, which may be a good thing, but to me, with reading encyclopedia's the old fashioned way, one might easily get lost in going from reference to reference just as informative, interesting sidelines to the original quest.

Mind you now, I am not complaining, not at all, in fact, there are so many reruns of the television specials that I have to search for the new or newest ones. All of this put together has a meaning that I can't quite grasp, an avalanche of information never before available with so much ease and information that can quickly be confirmed from many more points of view than the old methods permitted.

There is a live video camera observing Mt. St. Helens, the volcanic crater, available 24/7, and continual satellite feed that shows the earth from some 20,000 miles in space and dozens more plus the ones I have not yet discovered.

I just keep wondering as we are in the midst of this gigantic exponential increase in available information, as to what it all means as time marches on and new generations take for granted what I find new and amazing....

dunno....

I am addicted to programs about climbing Mt. Everest. Particularly, "Everest: Beyond the Limit," on Discovery Channel.

I have no idea why.
