I'm pretty sure I broke my toe. Does anybody know what medical treatment there is for it? In other words, is it worth it to go to the clinic, or should I just live with it? I've broken several others in the past, and didn't go to the doctor then. Any ideas? And yes, it hurts!

I have never gone to a doctor for that...but that is because i was always told by my mom and a few others that they don't do anything for broken toes

Did you breakt all of your toes or just a few... i asked my aunt shes a PA she said that you should bind them kind of like using your one toe as a splint for another

I would suggest you go if only to make sure your toe is set straight before it heals. I broke one of my big toes aobut 20 years ago and never went to the doctor for it. I thought it was to small of a deal for that.

However, since it healed it sometimes hurts like hell because it healed a little crooked. And sometimes when I'm running or in some other physical activity it begins to hurt like hell..

Thanks, guys. It's just one toe. The third one in on the right foot. It's a lovely mixture of blue and purple right now. :( I think I may go to the clinic anyway. It's free, and I don't have anything else to do! *sigh* I hate this. It takes weeks to heal up enough to put a shoe on and not limp and look pathetic. And I was gonna go job hunting tomorrow! Damn it!

been there

If the toe is broken BUT aligned most often the treatment of choice is "buddy tape" it to the toe next to it. Then try to rest it and ice it, keep it elevated to prevent uncomfortable swelling. Unfortunately, if your toes heal out of alignment it is possible to throw off your stride. Then the fix is to re-break the thing (hurts worse second time 'round). Also while it's healing wear good supportive shoes if you must be on your feet for extended periods of time. Good Luck!

the "buddy tape" procedure is pretty standard, at least it was the last two times i broke toes. i would suggest that if it is such pretty colors, you should have the bones set. you could do it yourself, but then the pain would be horrifying and there is a possibility of a blood clot.

First of all what toe is affected? If it is your great toe <big toe> then go to the doctors. If there is deformity or "crooked" then go to the doctors. The reason they tape to the next toe is to splint it. If the bone is immobile it will not hurt as much. Wearing a hard sole shoe will protect your toes and allow less movement of the injured toe. Big toes are more complicated and may require aggresive intervention if fractured. Hope this helps.

Go to the clinic

having broken almost all of my toes(except the 4th toe on my left foot-oops now he is doomed)and having set most of them myself-it hurts like hell and as Merlin said they never heal perfectly...I am quirky about medical care and only went for my big toes, all the lesser toes I did with the "buddy system"-ice,elevation and a trip to the clinic.
You have my sympathy..take care.

Hey April. If its all discolored, swollen and hurts like a bitch? Yes, chances are its broken. I broke mine a couple of weeks back. My foot slipped and it hit my husbands foot. I look down, my toe is at a 90degree angle. It was broke. About the only thing you can do(as said before) is buddytape it. To the next largest toe. Its uncomfortable as hell, but its supposed to help it heal better. Now mine is still swollen, and its been almost a month. He said it could take a couple of months before it starts looking normal again. (oh yay) Just keep trying to wear shoes, because I was told it helps keeping the swelling down. And ice it down. Ice is cold, but its your friend.

JADE WORKS FOR A FOOT DOCTOR

Use toe next to it as a splint

Wear a loose fitting shoe

Go see a doctor or foot doctor for pain relief and to make sure it sets itself back correctly.

My work here is done

See how easy this doctor gig is? The nurses and PA's do all the work and I get to bill the insurance company. Hope you feel better Ms. April! ;)

Just a little update. Have not gone to the clinic. And I probably won't. The toe is not deformed or crooked in any way. Just interesting colors and very slightly swollen. All the others healed up just fine, so I assume this one will too. Thanks everybody. It's nice to know that people care. :)
