It was a normal week really, work had been its usual boring self so far with little or no excitement even threatening to raise its head. Working in the towns bank had afforded him time to get to know most of the people who came in and 10 years down the line it was still the same steady pace he'd come to accept, quite the step down from the college football he thought he'd never stop playing.
Nobody had been in for some time so he decided it was a good time to nip outside for a quick smoke. Going out the back door into the alley he lit up, taking a long draw before slouching against the wall and breathing out. Leaning his head back till it touched the wall looking up at the sky for a moment.
The first drop of rain got him right in the eye, bringing his head back down to his chest blinking rubbing his eye quickly before the heavens opened up. He jumped back inside flicking his cigarette into a newly forming puddle. Brushing of what he could from his jacket he went back inside when his cell went off.
"Hello?"
"Hello love it’s me, just thought I’d let you know I'm going to be another couple of days here. I miss you" her sweet voice was being overpowered by all the noise in the background at her office.
"OK dear, give me a call tonight, I have soccer practice later but you can call me after? I have to get back to work"
"Sure I’ll try my best hun, it’s a bit hectic here, bye"
With that he closed his cell pocketing it back into his jacket before walking back to his desk, sat down and looked at the picture of his wife on top of his paperwork. Picking up the frame and looking at the picture for a little bit, it was hard to think it had been 8 years since the wedding and things had been just normal really.
Her new job had started taking her out of state a lot on work assignments, but he kept himself busy most evenings wasn't much different from when she didn't work. They made up for it on the occasional weekend., he missed her but understood that this was something she had wanted to do for along time. She didn't get much excitement otherwise and it seemed to make her so happy, it was great to hear her so busy and enjoying her work.
He sat back in his chair looking at the clock over the main entrance slowly tick by, he couldn't wait till work was over so he could get some practice in on the fields, but at the moment that felt like an absolute age away. He slumped in his chair picking up a pencil and slowly twirling it in his fingers occasionally rapping the desk.
