(OOC: Welcome to a tale of incest set in Victorian England written by Sweetp4u/Seductive Sin and myself.)

Young Lucas Standish stood at the tall window of his father's study in their flat at Chelsea as he idly gazed at the horse and carriages moving in the street below. Behind him, the sound of footsteps signalled that his father was going to enter the room at any moment. He turned his attention to the door as he made preparation for his entrance.

One look at his father's face as he strode in told him that he was not a happy man.

"What is the meaning of this?" His father said, accusingly as he raised a fist. In it was a scrunched up letter.

"I do not know..." He began innocently, knowing full well what was in the letter and where it had come from.

"Like in Blazes you don't know, boy!" His father stormed. "Have you no decency? At the very least, you can own up to what you have done!"

"Father, I..."

"To be thrown out of one of England's most prominent universities just because you could not control yourself."

Lucas could see his father's face becoming more crimson as his temper rose.

"Do you realise the embarrassment you have caused??? To me? To our family name?"

Lucas just stood there. Silent.

"And with one of the lecturer's wives???"

"I am sorry, father." Lucas finally said. That caused the older man to pause, his eyes staring at him incredulously.

"Sorry? Is that all you can say? My God! You didn't even try to be discreet. Not only did you make a fool of yourself in front of this woman, but you also put yourself in a position so that she would complain to her husband?" In disgust, his father turned his back.

"I am sorry, father." Lucas said again.

For a moment, the man just stood there, as if composing himself. Eventually, he turned and faced the boy.

"Well, I do not have the time to talk further on this matter as I have business I must attend to. I will be away for the next two weeks but rest assure, we will speak of this on my return. In the meantime, you and your mother will be going up to the country residence. I expect only the most exemplary behaviour from yourself."

"Yes, father."

Lucas watched as his father left the room...

Jocelyn Livingston Standish

She sat still and upright, her face a mask of serenity as she waited for her husband. He had summoned her from her visit with her sister, Amelia, apparently for something important.

She listened to the clock tick away the minutes, but little else made a sound in her home. One would think it was soothing, this quiet, but it made her feel all that much more empty inside.

Her fortieth birthday was approaching and just this morning learned she would be spending it in exile. The country, however quaint it sounded, was in the middle of no where and with little to do but sit idle. She was also a little upset to learn William would be spending two weeks else where instead of with her, but she also expected that.

Lost in her own thoughts, she failed to hear him enter the small parlor.

"What is she doing here?" He seethed dignity.

"Amelia?" Her eyes snapped to his face, taking note of the reddish hue and pursed lips. "She came to bring a.. a birthday present."

"That woman.. you're sister." He said it accusingly as if she could have picked her siblings before they were born, "Is.. quite frankly she is.. a radical. There I said it." He moved to pour himself a drink, "I do not like her here in our home Jocelyn. She is too boisterous and has upset many."

"She is not staying long William." She spoke but softly as to not incur his wrath. "What of Lucas?" She did her best to remain respectful so that he would answer her questions.

"I have spoken to the head master, they feel perhaps a small vacation and a hefty donation will soothe things over so that in a month or so Lucas can return to his studies.."

He is buying off the school attendants?

"What.." She paused, uncertain really what her quiet son could have done to cause such a stir? "What is it they accuse him of?" Surely not thievery?

"He.. How do I put this?" He paused, sipping his drink as he stared up at the picture of his father over the mantle. "He was making obscene overtures to a lecturer's wife."

Jocelyn could not find the right words to speak, she knew what she wished to say. That he had learned it from his father's example! But she knew that would only anger him, and it was not her place to say anything to William on how he chose to live.

"He is going with you, I know out there he can not cause any troubles. It is your duty Madam, to make sure he behaves himself and stays at the house." He dictated and she would do, it was not cruel really, it was just their duty to submit.

"As you wish William."

He moved towards her, bending down to place a chaste kiss upon her cheek before righting himself, "Yes, good.. good. Well I must see to my valet and ready myself for this trip. I have already ordered the staff here to begin packing and alerted the staff at Ravenhurst of your arrival. You leave tomorrow morning.." He strode out the door and never paused to look back.

Inside her mind was working non-stop trying to figure out why Lucas would make illicit proposals to a married woman? It was so unlike her son, whom not two weeks ago had his father convinced he was 'girlish' in nature. Swallowing her hurt and confusion, she headed back to the main parlor to continue her visit with her sister. If that were possible, so much to do and not enough time to do it all.

How could he just send them to the country so suddenly? She had hoped to attend the opera on her birthday this year, and now she would be looking at woods and horses instead.

She returned to her sister, but could not hide the disappointment in her eyes or voice. Amelia wanted to know what was wrong and so she confided in her sister the troubles with Lucas lately.

Jocelyn and Amelia

"I am so ashamed of his behavior, Amelia!" She sighed forlornly, her amount of stress seemed to be growing as each day passed here within the city.
"Gambling debts.. The Finkle's party was a disaster. People gossiping about William and now Lucas? What am I going to do?"

Amelia leaned forward from her chair, her concern creasing her face where Jocelyn chided, "Do not frown so Ame, it will give you premature wrinkles.."
"Never mind that Josey.. You need to see to your son." She fumbled with the words, the right words that would aid her sister and family, not upset Josey worse than she was already.

"Tell me.. How has he been behaving lately?" Amelia slid smoothly from her chair and joined Jocelyn on the small love seat. Their hands locked tightly, Jocelyn wondered if perhaps it was unwise to confess her woes to her sister? Amelia wasn't one for propriety and silence.

Amelia turned her big blue eyes upon her sister, that innocent ‘I will save you’ looks shimmering there. Jocelyn could feel her resolve crumble with that gaze turned on her full force.

"I do not like to tell private matters, you know this Amelia!" She eyed her sister sternly, "You must promise not to let anything said between us leave this room.. AND you must mean it, and keep that promise this time Amelia, I mean it!"
"You have my word. I love my nephew too Josey." Amelia had the gall to actually look hurt at Jocelyn's reluctance to speak.

"Well.. A few months ago, William tried to.. educate our son, in a manner I did not approve of mind you, but Lucas would not go along with his father's wishes.. I never asked what had happened nor where they went, but Lucas was locked in his room by his own choice for a week.. Only leaving to attend the University."
Jocelyn paused again, unsure how to proceed?

"Go on.." Her fingers tightened around Jocelyn's for comfort and encouragement.

"Well they had this loud argument, I remember being worried that the good neighbors might hear their filth! I was so shocked and shamed, from what they said to each other... what everyone would possibly hear.."

"Josey that isn't helping, get to the point please!" Amelia could care less how sensitive her sister was to their ‘reputation’; it wasn't the issue right then.

"William accused Lucas of..." Her lips trembled as she fought back the urge to cry while fighting back the anger in her voice, "preferring men to women!"

"NO!?" Amelia's eyes went wide as she stared at her sister, but the shock gave way as Amelia chuckled, "S-sorry.." Amelia did her best to cover up her reaction but Jocelyn didn't miss it and turned her anger on her sister.

"DON'T YOU DARE LAUGH!" She hissed loudly, her face jerking back behind them to check the door. Seeing it was shut tight she returned her glare to her sister's straining face.
"I am trying not to! But that is just SO ludicrous!" Amelia chuckled again, but bit her lip to stop herself from further outbursts.

"I can never talk to you Ame, you think everything is a silly prank or an uprising should occur!" Jocelyn moved to stand up but Amelia stopped her, her hand holding tight to Josey's.

"I am sorry Jocelyn.. Please, continue."

"You might find this situation amusing dearest sister, but I do not! This is my family, for good or bad! I can not have this going on.. this suspension and bribery and my son! MY SON!" She leaned in closer to her sister her whisper raspy as she clenched her teeth, "propositioning a professor's wife!"

Amelia did gasp even louder then, "Suspension? For that?"

"Amelia that isn't-" Jocelyn began but was cut off by her sister's tirade.

"That is unfair and very biased! What proof did they produce? Other than his wife's word against that of Lucas?! How can the Dean permit this to happen?"

"Amelia! He admitted it! Now hold your tongue before someone hears you!" She tugged on her sister’s hand this time, catching Amelia's attention.

"I do not see why you are so upset Jocelyn, He is but a normal young man coming into his... maturity.." Amelia went on to explain things Jocelyn did not wish to hear and only made her blush that much redder.

"Amelia! I gave birth to him, I do not need to be told how a male's body works! The filth you speak!" She was absolutely shocked by the terms coming from her sweet sister's mouth. Who knew Amelia knew such things?

"He needs to be educated properly, and with your good name on the line and as upset as William is, I would suggest discreetly."

"How? William would take my son to some brothel... Can you imagine what things he could catch there? Do you think I want my son deceased? And I doubt he really needs too much education, I've heard whispers in the halls of William sending.. a servant to his room.."

Amelia gaped at her sister for a long moment, "And you said nothing about this? A liaison with the help?!"

"It is William's choice, not mine! Nor is it my place to tell my husband anything."
"Old fashioned thoughts Josey dear, Old fashioned and wrong.." Amelia argued.
"Don't preach to me right now, I chose to honor and obey!"
"What are you? A blood hound?" Her brow arched as if expecting Jocelyn to answer that.
"Ame, stop! Please." Jocelyn sighed heavily, extracting her hand from her sister's grasp to straighten her dress. "I asked you here to discuss Lucas. There is little I can do for him now, as we're being shipped off to the country tomorrow."

"Needless to say, if you do nothing dear sister, if you say nothing nor try and help him with a this, something bad will come to pass. Who else would look after him with unconditional love? His father?" Amelia did an unladylike thing then and scoffed at her own question.

"What can I possibly do?"

"Educate him Jocelyn." Amelia reached out and turned her sister's face towards her, "Teach him what he needs to know."

The words sank in, but the meaning was so obtuse, "You .. you don't mean.." Jocelyn paled, "Where have you been lately to suggest something like that?!"

"YOU are his mother! I do not mean bring in someone and show them step by step how you.. you know.. mate!" Amelia even blushed then. "But I can send a care package along. With brochures.. I do know where to get.. certain kinds of.. pictures and stories.."

"Amelia Jane!" Jocelyn would have gaped but instead she had that firm 'mother's look' on her face. As both stared at each other, the silence lingering, Jocelyn could hear foot steps passing in the outer hall. Breath held, she waited to make sure the foot steps receded before she continued.

"Have you lost your wits girl!?" Her hands shot to her hips, her eyes hard on Amelia.

"I only offer help dearest sister, nothing more. It is up to you." Amelia's tone took on a note of cockiness as she went on, "Either you teach him, with love and care and understanding. Concerned for his safety and health.. Or you let his father teach him in the seediest places in the slums of this city.. Or worse, he goes off on his own to explore and learn.. At least if he is educated with enough reading materials before he goes out there and.. and.. well you know.. Forewarned is forearmed. He stands a better chance with you helping him, than without you Jocelyn."

Amelia had so many valid points that she could find no argument that would win over her sister, Jocelyn wasn't too certain of this idea of Amelia's but what could it hurt to try?

"I must go shortly Josey.. I want to see my nephew before I go, so I shall bid you good day, love." She stood but bent to kiss her sister's cheek. "Think about it Jocelyn. And I will see if Lucas is keen on an older woman helping him get educated before I go.. If he is, I will send you all the information I can obtain before you leave tomorrow."

Jocelyn, lost in thought, merely nodded her head and a vague reply of "Good day Ame." Her mind mulling over Amelia's arguments. She barely registered the rustle of skirts and door closing once more behind her. Amelia had so many valid arguments, but could she over come the indecency of this and do it?

Out in the hall Amelia found a passing servant and asked her to fetch Lucas for her, "I wish to speak with my nephew before I go, please fetch him."

Lucas

"You wished to see me, Aunt Amelia?" Lucas asked as he entered the conservatory.

His aunt gave him a warm smile which made him relax a little as she asked him to sit with her.

"Now, Lucas my dear boy, what is going on?" His aunt has never one to mince words.

"I don't understand."

"You know what I mean. You being expelled from school."

His aunt went silent and Lucas knew she was waiting for that explanation.

"I got expelled." He said simply.

His aunt waited a few seconds before her before saying: "And...? I know you have been expelled. I just said so remember? But what I do not understand is why? Your mother said it was because you propositioned a professor's wife. Is that true?"

Lucas looked up at her for a moment, wondering if he should tell the truth. But he simply nodded.

"Was she attractive?" Her next question caused Lucas to look up at his aunt in surprise.

"Oh don't give me that look, young man." She laughed kindly. "You are a very handsome young boy and you deserve to go with someone who is at least reasonably attractive."

He felt himself blush at her words.

"But it wasn't you was it. It was the wife that made a pass at you." Aunt Amelia said matter of factly.

He felt his blush increase as he stared at his shoes.

"I..." He tried to speak but his aunt cut him off as she reached over and took his hands in hers.

"It is alright, my darling child. It takes no great detective to realise that a young man who blushes at the first word of praise from a woman - even if it is from his aunt, is hardly worldly enough to try and seduce a woman of the same age as his mother."

Lucas smiled in relief. At last, someone knows the truth.

"But why did you not say anything to your father when he accused you?"

"Because he would not have believed me. Any more than the Dean did when I tried to protest." Lucas answered.

"I see." His aunt gently stroked his cheek. "But you should have at least said something to your mother. She is very distressed about this and you know you are the apple of her eye."

Lucas blushed again.

"But do not worry about that. I will set that straight." Lucas looked at her in alarm. "Oh I won't tell your father. Only your mother and I will know." She smiled again.

"But one thing I do not understand. If she was willing, how did you to get found out?" She asked him.

Realising that he had nothing else to hide, he opened his mouth to speak.

"My God. You rejected her!" She cried out in realisation. "Was she that ugly? That a young virile boy - no, man would turn her down."

For the first time, Lucas smiled. "No. She is very attractive actually."

"Then was it because she was a lot older than yourself? Is that it? You do not like older women?" He didn't notice his aunt watching him intently.

"No. That is not it at all." He blurted out and felt his cheeks ripen as he realised what he had just implied.

"Then why?"

"It was because it was inappropriate." He told her.

"I see." His aunt said after a long pause...

Amelia / Jocelyn

She could not disagree with what Lucas had said, but it did come as quite a shock to her. Jocelyn obviously instilled her morals into her son over the years to hear him say something like that. Especially coming from William's son's mouth.

She could see him becoming uncomfortable as she continued to stare at him, promptly her eyes moved and her smile returned. "It is refreshing to hear one your age speak this way. It means there is hope out there for others.." A light chuckle as she rose from her seat to move around. The parlor was quiet, secluded as it were. A perfect place to converse in private with the heavy oak door as well.

"How can this situation be handled?" She bent forward, her fingers gently squeezing his own in an affectionate manner as she met him eye to eye. "Far be it from me to push or.. say something inappropriate but I do believe Lucas, that you need some confidence where women are concerned." Poised and paused, she then added, "There is a fine line between what is allowable and what is not when you consider appropriation.." She released him and moved away, all the while studying his facial features, his hidden eyes. He was uncomfortable with this conversation, entirely! It did shock her some what, given the randy nature of young men and the things one would do to achieve release.

Some how though, it didn't appear as if Lucas had the same drive as other normal young men his age... or he disguised it rather well. "Did you turn her down because she was married, Lucas?" The question was blunt, but Amelia never really was one to dance around the bush about something.

"Far be it from me to push or.. say something inappropriate but I do believe Lucas, that you need some confidence where women are concerned...There is a fine line between what is allowable and what is not when you consider appropriation.."

Lucas was not sure that he understood what his aunt had just said, but he did started to feel decidely uncomfortable.

"Did you turn her down because she was married, Lucas?"

That last question threw him, not so much because of what his aunt had said but more to the sudden distinct feeling that she was trying to get him to admit that he did like Mrs Steadman.

Yes, he did think she was very attractive, but she would never be as lovely as... Suddenly realising the path his thoughts were going, Lucas mentally shook his head.

"Well?" He realised that his aunt was waiting for an answer, her eyes fixed on him as he looked back at her. Now feeling flustered, he struggled to speak.

"I-I suppose so." He managed to say, hoping that would satisfy her.

It didn't.

"And if she was not? Would you have been interested then?" He felt her unwavering stare unsettling as if she was trying to read his secret thoughts.

He looked away as he muttered "I do not know."...

Amelia

She was certain that his lack of action was due to the age difference, or perhaps the married state of the woman. It isn't as if the woman in question was not of passable countenance, she was a handsome woman.

"There is much a woman of a mature age could teach a young man." Was that over the line? Amelia stopped for only a brief pause to consider it before continuing. "Knowledge and patience, understanding as well and not as shy as young misses. Also no obligation to marry a lover, verses a debutante." She rambled quickly as she paced but halted in her steps when the clock chimed the hour.

"Oh dear!" She glanced at the clock, there was so much to get done before Josey left tomorrow morn. "Forgive me dear-heart." She bent and placed a kiss near his cheek before rising, "I must hurry, I promised to finish some errands for your mother before tomorrow. Be well, and safe journey." She said all this as she moved to gather her things, calling out behind her as she walked. It was rude to shout, but she really had no choice since Lucas had stayed in the parlor, seated and silent.

Amelia was set in her mind, all Lucas needed was an education and a little confidence. She would write her sister a letter with her recommendations on how to boost the boy's confidence in himself and include it in the 'care package'.

Jocelyn came out to see her sister scrambling, but said nothing. The sisters hugged the sadness in Ame's eyes as she waved to her sister. To be confined in the country while her husband cruised around with any and every light skirt to be found merely because he did not wish to trust his own son! It appalled her, but there was little Amelia could do about it. Assisted into her carriage, Amelia made a little list of items as they rode off.

Inside the house things had gone back to their stale quiet normalness. Quiet footsteps rarely heard were about the only sound to offset the even ticking of the grandfather clock. A rustle of skirts indicated that his mother had entered the parlor but his eyes did not meet those of his mother as she came silently into the room.

"Good day, love." She seated herself at his side, her eyes studying his profile carefully. "Now don't be sullen.. Is there no greeting for me, dearest?" She smiled softly, her love for him would never diminish even with rumors flying high. Bending slightly, she presented her cheek as she had done since he were little for a kiss. Lucas as always, bent and gave his mother a small peck before straightening himself.

Perhaps he was too old to do this now? Her brows drew together as she worried that thought, so many things happening all at once and now exile... What could she say? Do not blame your father? She could say it, but would she have conviction behind the words?

"It won't be so bad Lucas. Granted it will be just you and I for the summer months, but I am sure there are plenty of things to do." She didn't really know what else to say, over the years it had become harder to console her son. She hated to feel a rift forming, perhaps something could be done? She may not have the loyalty nor love of her husband, but she knew what love was because of her son. She did not wish to lose that as well as all else she had given up over the years.

None of her emotions showed on her face, always passive almost angelic with serenity she sat there. Carefully seated, poised.. Some days she just wanted to slouch!

"Come, we must pack for our journey. I sent Alfred up to assist you." She touched his hand, naturally he turned and cupped hers within his. When had he grown up on her? The conversation of earlier replayed in her mind, she knew deep down she'd do anything to see Lucas smile again.

Dusk was starting to settle as the family carriage drew up outside the entrance of the large country estate. Once the carriage had settled, Lucas opened the door and stepped out, before turning around and assisting his mother.

"Thank you, darling." His mother said as they were met by Jhimes, their butler.

"Good evening, Madam. Sir. I hope that the journey was pleasant?" Jhimes asked as he directed two footmen to take the bags that had accompanied them.

"The journey was tiring." Answered his mother as she led the way. "I take it the house has been prepared?" This was their first visit of the year.

"Yes, Madam. The rooms are always ready - in the event you come without prior warning."

Obvious to the boy, his father had not warned Jhimes of their visit in advance. But then again, he hardly did.

"I can take that the Master will not be attending?" Jhimes asked.

This time Lucas replied:

"No my father will not be coming."

"May I ask how long you will be staying?"

"As long as we wish." Came his mother's curt reply. Obviously, the butler's questioning was annoying her.

"Yes, Madam. Of course, Madam." Jhimes remained silent after that.

Finally, with the bags installed in their rooms, his mother announced that they were hungry.

"Lucas and myself have not had anything to eat since left London. Make the meal light. We do not want to be retiring with indigestion." She told Jhimes who bowed. "Now I am going to lie down. Please awaken me in one hour's time."

"Yes, Madam." And Jhimes bowed slightly as Lucas' mother made her way up the long flight of stairs.

Lucas stood at the bottom of the staircase before deciding to follow suit...

If he is ever going to feel like a man, he has to be treated as one. Her mind was weary from the long coach ride and all the thoughts that kept playing through her mind over the course of their journey. Amelia had a point, her letter that had arrived with Lucas's 'care package' stressed those facts.

Lucas had been sheltered for far too long. She loved her son and her sister, she had no doubt that Amelia had been correct in her thoughts on how Josey raised her son.

She reached the landing, her eyes falling on the master bedroom that would never be used as her husband never came here. Her own door before her, she paused at the door way as a thought came to her.

The shuffling of feet behind her lurched her from her inner turmoil as she felt the presence come up behind her.

"Rest well, Mother." Lucas passed in the hall, apprently going to his old nursery turned suite.

"Lucas?" Josey spoke up without thought, having not though really any of this through, it was unlike her to jump so quickly to any decision.

"Yes?" He turned, his eyes meeting hers.

She straightened up a little, her smile coming easily as she eyed the man her son had become. "If you are going to be the man of the house this summer vacation.. It is only fitting you take the master bedroom." Her eyes twinkled with mischief but sincerity. Her hands clutched the thick envelope before her as Lucas's eyes widened slightly with surprise.

"Father's room?" He didn't seem to be too comfortable with it, or perhaps she was being overly critical?

"Well.. yes and no. This is my dowager house, no matter what. As you well know your father will never step foot here. So why not? Besides that nursery is far too small for a grown man to reside in."

He opened his mouth to protest but she cut him off quickly, "Do not argue young man." Her tone was not harsh but firm. She approached him, tempted to hide the envelope and inspect it before she ever gave it to him. She found herself unwilling to look at the materials Amelia had procured for fear she would never give it to her son.

"This is also for you. It arrived before we left but I had.. forgotten about it until now." She handed it over to him, "Please have the help move your things to the appropriate room." She leaned up.. My lord he has grown! and kissed his cheek. "Thank you, dearest." Before he could change her mind or question her motives further, she vanished into her own rooms.

Her heart was pounding as she stood on the other side of the closed door. She wanted to take that envelope back, read through it all before Lucas could see whatever was inside, but Amelia's letter had warned her not to and not to back out of this either. Reminding her yet again of her duty as Lucas's mother.

It did not bother her that her son was taking the master bedroom, at least it was being put to use. She never needed the space and she did wish her son to feel like the man he should be. A confident one at that! Now, to figure out how to help him gain confidence?

She checked the adjoining door visually, noting it was shut and most likely locked she lay on her own bed to try and rest.

Down the hall....

In the darkened interior, Faith waited. She had prepared as instructed for her new 'charge' to arrive. Even though she was a little nervous, she had been assured by the Master that she would come to no harm and be well taken care of. All she had to do was educate his son.

Her gown was barely on her frame, buttons loosened and pantaloons gone. Her hair was down and she smelled of sweet apples from the orchard. Attractive girl, barely nineteen years of age, but her family had worked the fields for the master's family for many years. She was comfortable here, but a little nervous as she had not seen Lucas in several years.

Was he still handsome? Was he rough or tender? Would he be shy as the Master had said?

She felt her pulse leap as the door crept open and from the tailored clothing, it appeared the master's son had arrived. She sat on the bed, bare feet swinging a little back and forth until he had stepped into the room. Filtered light came into the room so one was not blind here, but she knew his eyes had to adjust some what.

"Hello Master Lucas." Her voice was sweet and soft, light and inviting as she suddenly stood and bowed gracefully as possible given her state of dress.. rather undress.

She would have laughed if she hadn't been threatened with a beating by the master before hand, at Lucas's reaction to her greeting. This was the boy she remembered, now a man by societies standards and still as handsome as ever. His mother's genes there. It was a relief he wasn't disfigured or repulsive to look upon. It would make this assignment much more appealing, especially with that baby face!

Her smile grew wider, her dimples appeared as she straightened back up right. "Your father has instructed me to help you in any way you deem fit."

Lucas

Lucas stood stunned outside his mother's bedroom door. The feeling of his mother's lips still on his cheek. Not only because of the envelope she has passed him but of what she had told him.

"May I take these to the master bedroom, sir?" Lucas turned to see Jhimes standing patiently behind him.

"Er...No. Take them to my room and I will get what I need later on after I have gone out for a stroll in the woods."

"Very well, sir." And the butler left him.

Despite the long journey, Lucas was not feeling at all fatigued. Instead he was filled with a burning curiosity to see what was in the envelope that his mother gave him. Equally curious to the boy was that he had the feeling that his mother had not wanted to give it to him.

Why?

With the envelope in his hand, he went back down the stairs and out of the house. It didn't take him long to reach the woods which surrounded the back of the property. Tracing a route that he had taken so many times when he was younger, he soon himself inside a familar clearing. It was here that he had come to escape the constant wrath of his father. Only the kindly Mrs Higgins knew of the location and she did not tell a soul. Instead, she would make sure that he was supplied with food and refreshment until he was ready to go back to the house and face the music.

Eventually, his father found out what she had been doing and instantly dismissed her. But to this day, he never found out the location of his secret hide-away.

Sitting on an old tree stump, Lucas ripped into the envelope...

The Mysterious Gift....

Inside Lucas’s package is a letter written clearly in a masculine hand.

Mr. Lucas Standish,

It has come to my attention through a mutual friend that you seek aid in the understanding of women, pleasure and the pursuit of happiness. While I do not, under normal circumstances, aid fellow gentleman such as yourself in pursuing lovely young ladies I found myself drawn to aid you. A favor for your mother, a rare beauty and gem that she is, but what else can an old friend do but assist? She has no knowledge of the contents of this package, nor who else other than your dearest aunt Amelia Livingston put this together. I advise you keep the contents within to yourself and read them well. Everything you ever wished to know is enclosed, from courting to seduction. I’ve included several written pieces by myself detailing the woman’s body and the responses to seek. These are fool proof methods, tested and true to deliver success. If you are serious, there is no woman of any age out there that you could not bed down. Use this knowledge wisely.

Best regards,
C. J.

P.S. Some brochures included within are of the darker taste, many forbidden fruits. If they do not appeal to you, merely ignore them.

Jocelyn Livingston Standish

Jocelyn entered her room, weary from the long hours spent in a bumpy carriage ride she wanted nothing more than to nap until the dining hour. She disrobed as she went, freed of her husband she resorted back to her nasty childhood habits.. She left everything on the floor behind her. Her bed was turned down and a letter rested against her pillow.

“Amelia!” A smile lit her face but her sadness didn’t leave her eyes. She already missed home and her sister, but she’d make due out here. She had a purpose after all, educating her son some how. She sit on the edge of her bed, letter in hand. ”Do I really want to read this?” She did wish to know what Amelia had put in Lucas’s package, and the answer would be in the letter… She hoped.

Dearest Josey,

I am sure by now you have received the package sent ahead for Lucas. I know you are reluctant to give it to him, love. He has grown up Josey, and he will need this time to learn all that he can. Remember your promise, both to me but also yourself that day. If you have peered inside and are a little shocked by what you have found in there, put aside the upbringing we both endured and put the envelope back together.

Jocelyn tensed with the letter clenched in her hands, she hadn't thought to look! Why did this letter sound so..? Perhaps she should have?

If you indeed kept your word, which I am most certain you have as I have the most loyal and honest sister one could ever hope for! I sought the aid of a well-known man, well he is well known among the ladies in the most biblical sense of the word. If anyone could help Lucas, I trust this is the man. I will not tell you whom it was I asked for assistance from. I would just say that if Lucas follows his instructions you’d never have to fear your son not successfully marrying in the near future.

The only trouble I found along the way is the fact that Lucas has no one near by him this time of the year to practice on. I would hope that you would lend a hand there and perhaps encourage Lucas to practice courting rituals in the privacy allotted there to the both of you? If you have need of anything, my coach is standing ready to come to your aid dear sister.

She scanned the paragraphs twice, her eyes wide with shock. "She asked.. no no, it isn't possible she'd ask him!" She talked to herself, her mind working more now than it had when she'd been handed the package. What was in it that her sister would write her with such cryptic terms? But the only man she'd ever heard whispers about what Clayton Jameson, a notorious scoundrel once upon a youth.

"Not possible.." She dismissed it, Amelia was just playing her games again, that was all.

As for Lucas, the only thing my lovely nephew needs is to gain some confidence in him self and perhaps be exposed to women of a mature mind verses young misses with no interests what so ever. I suggest you teach him courting etiquette Jocelyn, as you are the top most knowledgeable there in such things. Especially the courting rituals as you were in your time, one of the most sought after debutante.

With all my love,
Amelia

Jocelyn lay back, her mind and heart heavier than ever before. Had William been right about Lucas? Was her son so coddled by her that he did not find women appealing? How would she discover if that were the case? She lay for only a short time, fretting over her son’s future and sexual tastes before she fell into a restless slumber.

An Hour and a half later

Jocelyn sat quietly in the dining room, watching as the servants came and went with each course of the meal. Lucas sat at the other end of the table, but had yet to speak. Perhaps he was still embarassed over the scene at the University?

"Are the rooms acceptable Lucas?" Her voice was soft, her question quiet but there was no noise to speak over. Perhaps if she engaged him in some kind of discussion he might relax? Maybe even a stroll after dinner, it would be good for him to be required to escort her around. Practice made perfect, as Ames always said.

"Lucas? Are you listening to me?"

The sound of his mother's voice bought Lucas out of his reverie.

"Mother?" He answered, realising that he had allowed his mind to wonder back to the documents he had found in the envelope.

"Is everything well with you? You appear to be distracted." She asked.

"My apologies. I was just enjoying my soup." He replied lamely, unable to think of a more convincing excuse for his bad manners.

As he took another mouthful of the chicken broth, aware that his mother was still looking at him.

Does she suspect? Does she know what is in the envelope?

He was not sure himself. But after reading the letter, he had came to the conclusion that its contents should not be investigated in the woods in case of interruption. But if his mother did know.

He felt his pulse starting to race as he awaited her reply.

"Yes. It is exceedingly good." She said finally and he relaxed as she turned her attention back to the soup.

He admonished himself. How could she know what was in the envelope? The sender himself suggested that he should never tell her. So she could not have known.

"As I was saying: Are the rooms acceptable?"

"Very, mother. Thank you. I have moved a few of my belongings and have instructed Jhimes to transfer the rest tomorrow morning."

"Good."

And the room went silent, save for the ticking of the grandfather clock.

Lucas found himself eager to finish his meal and adjourn for the night so he could conduct a more thorough examination, when his mother spoke again...

"It's been suggested that I help in your education reguarding... women." Her voice was tight, strained. She was very close to being too embarassed to even speak about this matter, but as her sister had said.. someone had to.

"So, for this summer and while we are here.. the two of us, I will teaching you the essential things young men need to know about .. courting." She flushed, her eyes slipping from his as these words weren't something she ever thought she'd hear a mother, let alone a woman of her stature saying!

"After dinner, I would like you to escort me for a bit of fresh air around the gardens. A normal pass time that occures between courting couples." Did she just refer to herself and her son as a 'couple'?

She shook it off rather quickly enough, she had no devious plans behind this. "But from here on out, it is your job as the man to find out the things that I like to do and arrange for them to be done." She smiled softly, this was her little boy after all. There was no harm in spending time with her son, even if it was against his will. "And please, call me Jocelynn"

Perhaps it would suit best to relax him around her by using her given name. She met his gaze, he looked a little startled by what she had just told him. "We will walk, talk and pretend we do not know each other. Practice flirting and signs of flirtations. Who is and isn't acceptable is important to know as well. Also.." She paused a moment trying to recall everything she could, "Dancing is a big part of the courtship and being able to speak your mind while maintaining propriety levels of course." She stopped to sip her wine, her eyes resting firmly on him.

"Do you have any questions, Lucas?" She used his name pointedly.

"I can do this, I can and will!" How hard could it be educating her son? She would find out one way or another if he truely did prefer men over women some how.. without directly asking him of course. Unlady like by all means to ask something so personal as that! She wished Amelia was there, things would go so much smoother.

"Do you have any questions, Lucas?"

"I..." He tried to talk but could not find the words. His mother's announcement had taken the boy completely by surprise and he was having difficulty taking in what she had just said.

What had she offered exactly?

To 'help in his education regarding women.' To teach what he needs to know about courting.

But the implications?

Despite his admittedly sheltered upbringing, even he had an inkling on what courting couples got up to - if friend Percy's older sister's actions with her fiancee were any indication.

Surely, his mother would not expect them to do that, for them to kiss - mouth to mouth, lips on lips?

The idea and accompanying vision gave him a reaction which was not exactly that of revulsion.

"Lucas?"

Remembering that his mother was waiting a response, he cleared his throat. Suddenly, he felt decidedly uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry, mother. It is just," he paused, "it is just that your suggestion has taken me by surprise."

"That is ..erm.. to be expected." She said to him. "I apologise if this seems sudden. But I would not have brought this up if I did not think it was of serious import."

Was it his imagination but did she appear to look nervous as well?

"I would never have thought otherwise, mother." He said, his head now a little clearer. "However, if you would allow, I would like to reflect on what you said tonight and talk to you again on the subject in the morning?"...

Her cool blue eyes rose to meet her son's across the long table. Ever calm and collecting, she merely stared at him with disapprovement.

"I do understand you reasons and respect them, but a walk after dinner will do us both some good." She set her fork down, without a single sound to indicate she had done so. Raising her napkin, she patted her lips and tried to relax a little more outwardly.

Defiance was not something she was familiar with, not coming from Lucas of all people. She'd expect it of her husband, but not her own son. How did she handle this? She could make demands, but would he balk as he had done so many times before?

"I will agree to those terms, but tomorrow morning at the latest." She rose with the aid of a servant standing near by, "Now shall we go for a stroll?" She waited for him, to be a gentleman as he was raised to be and join her.

When he reluctantly rose and joined her, she felt a little relieved that they would not argue this night. She had enough of that while at home, this was a vacation of sorts and she wished to enjoy it.

Her silence wasn't unsettling, at least not to her as they strolled through the manor and out into the gardens. The staff had lit the gardens premptively and so most of the path was lit from beginning to end. Amelia did not tell her exactly how to help Lucas, so where would she start? How would she broach the subject of women and men with him?

It was all a little too uncomfortable, and perhaps a bad decision to have made? They wound through the gardens until she pulled from him to seat herself onto a stone bench. "A moment to rest, please." She was healthy and had no real reason to sit a spell, but it was nice and quiet out there this late of night. Perhaps the quiet would ease some of her worry?

She looked to Lucas and then away yet again. She would not bring it up this night, as he asked but it was taking a lot of her self restraint and uncertainty to keep a still tongue.

He had preferred to have retired straight after the meal. Mainly, to get away from this situation with his mother for time being as well but so that he could examine the package more closely. However, he was never one to directly refuse a request from her.

Even so, the two remained quiet as they traversed the grounds. The clear night revealing how magnificent they were but due to his current state of mind, Lucas was not very interested. His ill ease still with him.

Eventually, his mother announced that she wanted a rest and sat down on a convenient stone bench.

Lucas followed suit and there they sat. Looking at her, he found himself taking in her face as she stared out into space, particularly focusing on her full ruby lips.

How lovely she looks!

Realising what he was doing and thinking, he quickly looked away.

More silence.

"Mother?" Lucas said finally.

His mother turned towards him and gave him a warm smile.

"Yes, dear?"

"May I ask a question?" He asked.

"Of course." Was her reply.

"Why do you want to do this?" He then asked.

There was a slight pause and then: "I am sorry, dear. But I am not following you..."

He continued: "I mean. You told me that it had been suggested that you help me in my education towards women. Was it father?"...

Jocelyn

"Your father? Heavens no!" She smiled and shook her head, "His idea of assistance would be sending you to some disgusting house of ill repute and locking you within until you gave into his ludacris ideals!" She chuckled, the fresh air was doing her a world of good.

Rising from the bench, she smiled with pleasure as Lucas instantly rose with her to stroll along back the way they had come.

"Let's just say someone felt that I would be able to teach you what a real lady would like and dislike, rather than some trollop. And I would much rather assist you, the son I positively adore! than have some diseased creature lay a finger on you." She flushed scarlet, she hadn't been this forward with her thoughts is such a long time, it was almost staggering to hear herself speak so!

"Forgive me, I am not usually this frank, with anyone.. especially my son." She smiled as her hand caressed the back of his. "But you're a man now, and what good would it do if I were to not speak freely? I would also apprieciate it if you did like wise with me?" She paused half way down the trail her eyes lifting slightly to meet his. "My.. how you've grown.. I am proud of you Lucas, never doubt that. I just want what is best for you, and with that said, I would like to help you if you desire it?" Poor choice of words? It sounded innocent and to the point to her own ears.

He said nothing and so she continued down the path, her mind mulling over everything that had brought them to this point. She had never asked, but she was dying to know..

"Lucas?"
"Yes, Mother?" He spoke almost as quietly as she had.
"This thing, that happened at the University... Let's put that behind us, shall we?" She did not know how to ask him directly if he did prefer men to women, just the thought of it made her want to cry and blush both at the same time. It wasn't unheard of, but it was most decidedly frowned upon.

"You just tell me if you are interested in learning about men and women and courting and I will do my best to help with anything that may arise. Answer questions, or merely show you how to properly waltz. That is, if you wish my aid?" She was giving him a way out, giving him free choice but it was hard for her to do so.
