She stood against the wall and pulled the Yankee's ball cap over her blue eyes. Her jeans were worn and tattered and her leather coat had become useless. She checked her pockets carefully - each bag and each dollar was accounted for. She'd only come up short once, and Jake made sure that she'd learned her lesson. She'd been standing there for a couple hours now, and she was beginning to get a little hungry. These guys never showed up when they said they would. A couple of weeks ago she'd had to stand there almost all night before the final pick up was made.

Marliegh was a 19 year old train wreck. She'd never met her parents and had no real desire to. She'd been in and out of foster homes and group homes since she was 10. Her social worker never understood how she ever managed to graduate when she hardly ever attended school. She was smart, and she had a lot of logic, but she never put it to use. The day she turned 18 Marliegh disappeared almost entirely. Social Services lost track of her, and that's the way she wanted it. They had discouraged her from mingling with the "wrong kind of people." But that's the kind of people she fit in with - misfits, rebels, and trouble makers. When she was younger she'd been picked up a couple of times by the cops for shoplifting and a couple other misdemeanors. After a couple months in a detention center and in juvenille hall, Marliegh was determined to make as much trouble as she could.

When she started high school the kids thought she was some psychic witch. She was a natural brunette and she had blue eyes that had the depth and color of the Atlantic. It didn't take long. Before she knew it she was socializing with hard rocker party animals, sleeping with a new man every month, and smoking anything she could get her hands on. A couple of the people Marliegh hung around weren't exactly human, but that didn't scare her. She was the youngest and the smallest of the bunch, but she was by far the rowdiest. Once adreneline set in, nothing could stop her.

She'd had a couple odd jobs here and there, but only when money got tight. She did some crazy things when she got desperate, but selling her body was never one of them. She just couldn't do it - she had a little bit more integrity than that. She couldn't hold a regular job for the sole reason that she hated negative people. Marliegh could absorb the emotions of those around her, which is why she loved her friends. Her friends were the greatest bunch cause they were always happy and carefree.

Lately she'd been staying with her new boyfriend Jake and his friends in an abandoned warehouse. They dealt a lot of hard core drugs outta that place and it was hard for Marliegh to resist. Jake had asked her to make the "transactions" at the subway, and she could never seem to tell him no. So, about once or twice a week, she would wait around the subway until every customer showed up with the cash. Sometimes they didn't have the cash, and she had to tell them to come back with the money or not at all. Sometimes they were so hard up for their fix they wouldn't take no for an answer. Marliegh always had a couple bruises somewhere on her body.

It was 10 of, and it was time to call Jake from the pay phone and check in. He wanted to know where his money and his girl was at all times. She dropped in a couple quarters and made the call. It didn't last long and she was back to waiting. She adjusted her hat and shoved her hands into her pockets. She only had two more customers and then she could get back to the warehouse. After she handed Jake the money she'd have to get lost while the nights profits were counted, but she was allowed back in by morning.

Marliegh tried to block out all of the people that passed her. She could never explain it, and every time she tried to tell someone they laughed at her. She couldn't see it, she couldn't hear it, but she could feel it. She knew if a woman was upset when she walked by - even if the woman was completely calm. She knew when a man was secretly happy, even if it looked like he was about to cry. Marliegh didn't understand it, and all her life she'd tried to no avail to block it out. She didn't know that she'd been given the gift of empathy as a way to better understand humanity. Before her human life. she had been for centuries a guardian. But times were chaning. She was one of many that were sent without any prior knowledge to live and die on earth like a human. But her destiny hung in the balance as the other side - the enemy - had become her friends and protectors. They guarded her with a passion and fury unmatched. She would live and die like a human - but He would never have his precious guardian bach home.

Marliegh's legs were cold and numb by the time her final two customers had shown up. She knew that because they'd taken this long to get there that they probably didn't have the money to pay her. She recognized them the moment they started walking up to her. These two guys usually gave her problems, and were usually the most violent when they were hard up for cash or their fix.

She shifted her body back and forth as she reached for her pocket knife. She looked up a bit but kept her eyes down. When they asked for the bags she asked them to show her the money. They refused and begged her.

"You guys know the rules, unless I have the cash you don't get the stuff."

Their response was as expected. It started out easy enough, but they turned violent. She told them the same thing she'd told them a thousand times before - unless she had the money they'd have to get lost. But they knew their release was in her pocket, and no way in hell were they going to let her alone until they had it in their hands.

She knew that they'd come together knowing that they would have to beat her down to get what they wanted, and from now on she would be taking more than just a pocket knife with her to the subway. Marliegh saw the figure out of the corner of her eye and she saw it walking towards her. From underneath her cap she watched it move closer and thought that if she could stall them long enough the figure would be able to help her.

She heard the click and tried to react. She didn't know who had the switch blade, or if they both did. Things had never gotten this bad before, things had never turned this ugly.

But she didn't even have to pull out her own blade - she didn't have time. The dark figure lurched forward and took on both thugs. She watched him in amazement as both fell to the floor in mere seconds. But her mind snapped back almost immediately as one ripped a bag from her. She knew she would be dead if he got away with it, but it only took one kick from her and the dark figure was upon him.

The scene was pure chaos, she didn't understand what was going on. They'd tried to grab a hold of her, then the man had gone into the air, she'd lost a bag, it was all too much for her to follow. She accounted for one bag as the men began to limp away and saw that the man who had helped her was holding the other. When he offered it she snatched it away immediatley and inspected it. She looked at him warily from underneath her cap.

But when he asked Are you hurt? she was shocked. She froze for a second before responding. No one had asked her that in years.

"I'm fine," she snapped. "Unless you want to make a trade, I've got to go," she said as she stuffed both bags into her pockets and counted the money. With eveything accounted for she waited for his response. At the first sign of no she was ready to sprint down to the bus station and back to the warehouse. Jake would not be happy. He might even have to move her because the two thugs would defintely come back. That would mess up the routine. And it was all her fault. She shook a little - both from the cold and from her nervousness.

"So what's it gonna be?"

She fidgeted uncomfortably. Something in the back of Marliegh's mind told her that something was up. She couldn't quite tell who this person was or what he was feeling. It was both a shock and a relief to her as she looked him over carefully. But there was something...something...somethig unnatural about him, but she couldn't place her finger on it. She may not have been able to sense his emotions, but she could still read his face and body language. He was a somber, solemn character. Lonesome, even. Marliegh's heart softened a bit.

She watched him light his cigarette. "You know, if it's cigarettes you like, this stuff is better. Same stuff that's in heroine they use in niccotine." She stopped for a moment and surveyed him skeptically. She didn't know what to make of this fellow. She wasn't use to strangers, especially strangers like him.

"If you need a fix, I can hook you up." She said, quite business like. And to her, that's what it was. Business. She'd adopted a tone of formality quite a long time ago and had been utilizing it ever since. The warmth faded as she thought about Jake. He'd be less angry and he'd forget about her tardiness if she'd sold all of her stock. She was running short on time.

"But if you're not interested in doing business, then I have to go. Yeah, it's safe, but no, you can't walk me there. If we got nothin' else to talk about I have to be on my way before I get in trouble. I'm already wasting time." If he made her wait too much longer the hour would be up and she'd have to call his cellphone again and tell him she'd been attacked.

She tapped her foot impatiently and looked around. Jake had sent a couple of his guys to watch her every now and then - just to make sure she was doing her job. She'd never gotten in trouble because she was always focused, but if this guy wasn't going to help her she was going to have to make a run for it.

She took her hat off and tried to fix her pony tail and quickly pulled it back over her eyes.
