Two weeks ago
Essie looked up in awe. The building was at least 14 stories high and sported the company name in large, friendly letters: 'Furrows & Co.'
This was not just any building.
She was allowed to enter.
She was going to work here! An actual auditing company! Who'd have thought with her background in history? The switch did not make sense at all, to go from her thesis research to a job that constituted as bureaucratic to the max. Yet in her mind, it did make sense. Both involved lots, lots and LOTS of paperwork.
She was good at paperwork. There was something about her hyperfocus that benefited quick scanning of pages, finding keywords and connecting the dots. Maybe that was what had gotten them convinced to actually let her learn on the job instead of require previous experience in the field. Otherwise she was not very impressive to look at in a company like this: a little on the short side with her 1.65 meters, a kind of faery-ish look about her with those eyes that seemed to change colour from time to time and her face surrounded by happy curls, even if she was as practical as the next gal.
The young woman checked her short, dark blond curls for neatness -as far as that was possible with her silly hair- straightened her back and walked in, her dress swaying around her legs as she tried to move with confidence.
This was it.
A new life.

Today
Essie shot a look at Justin, her mentor and co-worker on this case. She had not gotten a chance to meet him before today and found herself very curious how the man would handle himself at an audit.
He was rather impressive, she had to admit, all but towering over her. Yet the woman was not about to let herself be cowed by anyone. She was here to learn and learn she would. Now, whereas doing research for her paper was mostly suited for introverts, the blond would have to show more of a personality here, no doubt!
No time like the present to start...
"So...miste...eh, Justin...heh, sorry about that. First impressions and all that at the audit, how do you usually do this? Good cop bad cop? Or do you come in all smiles? Or ...uh...well, no wait, let's start at the beginning. What's the goal for this one? Wait, let me grab my notepad. I want to make some notes."
You're babbling like a mad woman! Nervous much? Come on! He's not going to eat you. He's here to teach you! She chided herself.
